For Too Many Women, The World Is Still A Dangerous Place

On the domestic front, while we can hope that the number of women condoning physical abuse are much lower, the actual  stats are frightening.

  • Every 9 seconds, a woman is battered in the U.S.
    Family Violence Prevention Fund, 1994.
  • 95% of all victims of domestic violence are women.
Bureau of Justice Statistics Special Report, U.S. Dept. of Justice.
  • Domestic Violence is the single major cause of injury to women, more than muggings and car accidents combined.
First Comprehensive National Health Study of American Women, The Commonwealth Fund, 1993.
  • Domestic Violence is the cause of 30% of physical disabilities in women.
California Department of Social Services, 1994.
  • 50% of all women murdered in the United States are killed by a spouse or an acquaintance.
    Journal of Trauma, 1992
  • Domestic Violence occurs in 60% of marriages and is the most underreported crime.
    National Crime Statistics Report, 1993.

OMG! I was aware the situation was bad but never imagined the numbers would be so high. How depressing.

  2. Carla D. says:

In many areas we’re as backwards as the rest of the world. For every battered woman there’s a man doing the battering.

  3. Randi says:

In Thom Hartman’s book,”Threshold” he talks about how the most successful societies are where woman have equal or more power.

  4. Dahl says:

Oh gosh, lets see if we can figure out the core of why this is. Could it be RELIGION? Most religions see the female as beneath the male and second class.

Even in a civilized free ‘educated’ society Christian, Muslim and Jewish males have never been able to man up and take responsibility for eating THE apple. No, it was the lowly evil female’s temptation skills that got blamed for the downfall of man; got ‘em thrown out by the landlord made ‘em ashamed of their body and sex an evil nasty thing to do (well Paul made sex a really bad thing). The male has been demanding the female apologize for this ever since.

Just as violence has a biological memory that must be stopped by the one male in the hereditary line brave enough to not hit no matter how ‘right’ and ‘normal’ it seems we also have ancient memory that speaks to the power of the male and the subservience of the female based on a powerful faith and still propagated by the high priests and members of the church.

Joseph Campbell said most all religions start with 1. A virgin and 2. An evil woman. Since there are over 8500 registered religions, that’s a whole lot of women to be pissed at and too many males unaccountable for their actions. Women still buy into it and confirmed the male belief by never ever being equal to man – “remember dear always let the man win”……

  5. I can believe the numbers…I was once one of those type of statistics. I look back now and wonder how I could have thought that way. How I could have made so many excuses. I am in a much better place now and so grateful. I hope other women will read this and realize that it can get better.

  6. janine says:

Thanks for bringing out these statistics. It is important to recognize domestic violence and work to eradicate it. This particular cause is near and dear, I cannot stand to see people subjugated. Even though there are a lot of us who speak out against violence, these statistics do not diminish…… Very sad that

@Dahl, you make a lot of good points and @Melody, we are glad you got out.

  7. PharmDude says:

Frightening. I passed this on to all the women in my life. Thanks for posting this.
