Say It Ain’t So Joe

Rachel Maddow deconstructs Joe Lieberman and his motives behind blocking the public option.  It appears that Lieberman has good reason to oppose the 68% of Connecticut voters who favor the public option and it has nothing to do with the welfare of the country and everything to do with the welfare of the Liebermans.

So…

I think clearly what it’s about is primarily that fact that the industry that he’s serving by doing this—by preventing competition with the public option—is an industry from which he receives very substantial benefits. He’s drowning in campaign contributions from the insurance industry, the health care industry, the pharmaceutical industry—more than $2.5 million.

In early 2005 his wife was hired by a large P.R. firm, Hill & Knowlton, in the pharmaceutical division, which at the time was representing the health care giant Glaxo in major legislation before the Senate. And several months later Joe Lieberman was on the floor of the Senate offering legislation that would directly steer huge amounts of incentives to that company in order to develop vaccines.

So I think what you’re seeing here is the kind of legalized corruption, legalized bribery that runs the United States Senate; only in this case it’s particularly sleazy and transparent because Lieberman is ready to gut the major initiative of the Democratic Party.

Joe Lieberman – just another fraudulent scumbag senator masquerading as a patriot.

remember the joe lieberman who ran for president, who was for healthcare for all americans, how it was our right to have it.that man is gone.in his place is a man who has become like his friends he was hanging out with, supporting them, talking out against the runner for his own party.joe has become a heartless gutless zombie like his gop friends. in his comments he laughs with his statements as if its all just one big joke to him.how many people in his state favor the public option.if you dont understand the bill, then sit down and read it..but the millions he has gotten paid by the insurance company shows us who he would rather help.when they elected you to your seat you were put there by the people of your state, but now you choose to let them and the rest of america down by not voting for this, taking the opinion of your gop friends,it will lower costs,it will do alot of good but your interests are not in helping the american people, your laughing and you find this all to be a big joke, the american peoples wants one big joke? you sir are one of the biggest dissappointments of a senator, you failed to listen,or to hear with an open mind and heart.you dont deserve to be there.i feel if you dont want americans to have healthcare, then you and the rest of the buffoons in washington should give up your health coverage it should be for all not for just a certain few..how do you live with yourself sir,you should be ashamed of yourself.

  3. Research 2000 Poll:

Do you favor or oppose creating a government-administered health insurance option that anyone can purchase to compete with private insurance plans?

    Favor 68
    Oppose 21

  4. defolts says:

Mario don’t get me wrong I have great respect for Markos Moulitsas but it would seem to me his poll just might be a little biased, kind of like the latest Consumer Reports ratings on Autos, which should have been people that read consumers (are more likely to buy and love imports no matter what) but not really an accurate measure, just as DailyKos might look for more supportive people (like me) but 68% seems a little high, Fox has polls all the time and the way they are worded almost guarantees they are looking for.

  5. janine says:

    @Tennessean

and here’s a poll that says 64% of Connecticut folks are in favor of the public option

    http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x1296.xml?ReleaseID=1374

  6. @defolts

It’s a Research 2000 poll commissioned by DailyKos. Anyway, the point here is that a majority of people in Connecticut are in favor of a public option. Whether the actual number is 52 or 58 or 62 percent is besides the point.

  7. Tommy Pane says:

Isolate and marginalize the dissention. This is an old tactic. Nobody’s buying it anymore.

  8. janine says:

And the dissenters marginalize the majority.

  9. Tennessean says:

mario, I disagree. That is a big point. The difference to ME is that if I were a Senator, a 6% margin I figure allows me to weight MY opinions and convictions a bit more. A 32% margin is an overwhelming majority of my constituency and I would set my personal convictions and opinions aside.

And you guys need to be honest about it. True, a majority of people would like to see some sort of public option to compete with private Health Care Insurers.

But a majority of people DO NOT want what is being floated out there now and DO NOT want “Government Run” Health Care. You guys try to make it sound like they are one and the same.

  10. There are a number of polls out there. We have three which have been cited here showing 68, 64 and 52. We all know that the phrasing of the question will skew the answer in one direction or another. My point is that a majority do want a public option and Lieberman and Republicans are simply saying no.

And don’t dismiss the politics behind it all…from “Obama’s Waterloo” to my post on Lieberman and his wife being in the pocket of the health industry.

    http://mariopiperni.com/health-care/say-it-aint-so-joe.php

  11. Tennessean says:

mario, you are just being deceptive. The majority of People do want some form of Public Option. The majority of people DO NOT want the plans being floated now. The majority of people DO NOT want a government ran or “interfered with” Health Care System.

You try to wrap it all up in one bundle to make it appear like the “majority” are in favor of the health care initiatives that are now before Congress or worse, in favor of Government Run Health Care.

    That is just dishonest.

You state, “We all know that the phrasing of the question will skew the answer…” and that is true. Where the dishonesty comes in, in my opinion, is when you only use the answers you favor to try and make a universal point.

  12. You’re all over the place on this one. The numbers are on the side of a public option. That is crystal clear. You’re in denial. Good luck with the spin.

  13. Jovial says:

    Tennessean,Tommy

If the majority of Congress pass this health care reform bill for whatever it represents above 50%,THEN OUR DEMOCRACY DECLARES IT LAWFUL.You can have all the polls and surveys out there but the feeling is that the majority want it. We will know for sure when the legislation is tabled and voted on. With Reid now on board,it looks like even the Blue Dogs are having a hard time to dispel the will of the people.

My money is on the passage of the health care reform bill.

  14. Tommy Pane says:

It won’t be “your money” paying off that bet. It’ll be my money, along with another degree of our fee will.

The left, in control of public education (and most college education), has given us a population lacking basic knowledge of civics and economics. Now they use that void, under the banner of democracy, to lure that same population into giving up their free will. Yeah, progressives should be real proud of themselves.

  15. Tennessean says:

jovial says, “You can have all the polls and surveys out there but the feeling is that the majority want it.”

Oh? So now we are governing on “feelings”? A real Socialist Utopia!!

That is about the most (sorry anomaly) asinine, ridiculous, (real exasperated sound here) what EVER statement I have heard in a long time.

Screw the surveys. Screw the Polls. Screw the PEOPLE!! We are going to govern by Barney and Nancy’s “feelings”.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VofLbnNronk

    “Feelings, nothing more than feelings…..”

  16. Tennessean says:

mario, I guess it’s just a question of who is doing the spinning??

I hope you aren’t trying to imply I’m incorrect because there is way ample sourcing out there to back up what I’ve said. I don’t make too many statements without making certain I can back them up. ESPECIALLY not with this crowd.

  17. janine says:

    @Tommy_Pane

The Republicans have been in the White House, what 28 out of the last 40 years (estimate). And you think the left has screwed up public education? Republicans constantly cut education costs from the budget, so who has given us a population lacking in basic knowledge? and don’t parents bear some responsibility? Yeah, the right should be real proud of themselves for dumbing down American children

  18. Tommy Pane says:

You’re not serious with that comment Janine, are you? The teachers unions are 100% demorats. The teachers teach what they’re told to, and their bosses are all demorats. Jimmy Carter’s Department of Education has steadily worked to take control of what used to be a local endevour. Our spending on education is up, as are our dropout rates. No, the dems own the problems with our education system.

  19. janine says:

    @Tommy Pane

and who is in charge of the Department of Education?

state education funds have dwindled, dropout rates are a systemic problem brought about by parental/societal issues, not just the school system.

  20. Tommy Pane says:

Aside from the obvious deflection, the parental/social issues are, to a large extent, the result of our welfare state. It has promoted an attitude of entitlement and personal irresponsibility. It’s also been pushed mostly by dems.

  21. Norma Newell says:

I heard Joe Lieberman saying the public option would become an entitlement. Who entitled commercial insurance to sit on top of the health care system pocketing billions and welching on responsibilities to the policy holders. Insurance did not start out this way. In 1985 Allstate decided they wanted to become more profitable and decided they would look for ways to get out of paying claims and keep more of the premiums for themselves. The other insurance companies followed suit. The health insurance companies have become the most horrendous. AIG is a prime example of the insidious corruption. I ask, How is it that Health Insurance Industries are entilted???? How Mr Lieberman?

  22. Tennessean says:

Norma, with profit margins reported at between 2% and 6%, shouldn’t the Insurance Industries be asking how it is that you think they are so “Entitled”?

  23. Tommy Pane says:

They’re entitled only by the lack of options given to consumers. If, as a consumer, i had 50 different companies to choose from if my current insurer provided poor service, the service would improve and the rates would drop. That can’t happen until selling health insurance across state lines is opened up.

If the government gets involved with a “public option”, the unfair competition will drive private sector insurers out of business, leaving us with no options. Do you think your level of service will improve in an envirourment of no competition, especially when it’s a government agency providing the service?

There are two secrets to success in business. 1) Provide better service and/or prices than your competition, or 2) have no competition. The insurance companies have lobbied for a system that gives them virtual monopolies within their states of operation. Our lawmakers have given them that. Now those same lawmakers say the only way to solve the problem is to put themselves in charge.

  24. Anomaly100 says:

@Mario: As you said, the percentage doesn’t really matter. It matters that more Americans favor the public option than not. If it really is important to the Republicans, then they should not inflate the numbers of the teaparties & protests. We know some people are against their taxes being increased (which aren’t) & now they know most Americans want healthcare for EVERYONE. No poll is infallible, but the picture is clearer when we see the numbers. Most Americans want the public option.
