Why Do Republicans Hate Infants?

.

These people are disgusting.

Despite pleas by children’s advocates and testimony that babies will die, Republicans on the state Senate Finance Committee stripped funding for an infant-death reduction initiative that officials say is reducing Memphis and Tennessee’s high rates of infant mortality.

The committee voted 7-4, on straight party lines Thursday night to reject an effort by Senate Democratic Leader Jim Kyle of Memphis and others to restore the state budget funding for the governor’s Office of Children’s Care Coordination and the grants it administers across Tennessee.

Republicans hold a 19-14 Senate majority, and the budget alternative they first unveiled May 11 has called for cutting the program’s $4.6 million budget in half for the fiscal year that starts July 1, then eliminating it entirely the following year.

If you’re wondering why Republicans would appear to not care about saving infant lives, here’s a clue.

Deborah Clubb, executive director of the Memphis Area Women’s Council, said the committee’s vote “will shut down all of the effort that began five years ago … to address the horrific rate of dying babies in Shelby County.”

“It’s bizarre that fish hatcheries in East Tennessee stand a better chance of being funded than programs that directly impact our infant mortality rate, saving African-American babies, through funding by the Governor’s Office of Children’s Care Coordination,” Clubb said.

“African-American babies are dying at three times the rate of Caucasian babies.”

These hypocrites are the same scum who scream and yell about the sanctity of life when it comes to embryos but have no problem withholding funding for a program with a proven track record in saving infant lives.  They had no problem doing all they could to block health insurance reform even with the knowledge that the broken system kills one American every 12 minutes of every day of every week of every month of every year.  They don’t care.  They really don’t.  It appears that if an initiative is not beneficial to big business or rich then it doesn’t hold much interest for Republicans.

Whether one is a conservative or liberal, this story should bother you.  And if it doesn’t, then please explain how the actions of these Republican politicians are not tantamount to murder?

Online Poker And Silly Laws

.

Did prohibition not teach these people anything? When government attempts to ban an activity which the masses desire, the people will find a way to do it no matter which laws are enacted.

With just two weeks to go before a federal law aimed at quashing Internet gambling takes effect, a handful of House Democrats, including Rep. Barney Frank, D-Massachusetts, are going all in, pushing for the legalization of some of the most popular forms of online gambling. The lobbying is intense, and the stakes are high – by some estimates the Internet gaming industry generates as much as $6 billion a year in profits – and no one on either side of the debate appears ready to fold.

… Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Alabama, the Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee, said he would do everything in his power to stop the legalization of Internet gambling, specifically singling out online poker.

The bill would not outlaw online gambling but instead will make it difficult for players to transfer funds from American banks and other financial institutions into their online poker accounts.  Millions of online poker players have already found ways around the provision by using overseas credit cards.

Online poker is not going to disappear no matter which laws are passed by short-sighted politicians.  With that in mind, the focus should be on proper regulation and education.  This issue is not unlike abortion and prostitution in that it matters not whether government passes a single law or a thousand laws making it unlawful or difficult to have an abortion or deal with a prostitute. People will find a way. Therefore, government’s approach should be in regulating the practices to ensure the safety of those who choose to partake.

And if those arguments fail to convince you, then let me steal one from my teabagging friends.  Less government intrusion in the lives of ordinary people.

Farewell To A Friend and Companion

.

The above image is an illustration I did earlier this year of Boston, my friend Tom’s beloved dog.  Boston passed away a short while ago.

The devastation and loss felt by the death of a family pet is one which could only be fully understood by one who has experienced the joy of owning an animal they truly love. The companionship and unconditional love they provide is part of the reason why the grief felt is every bit as real as any loss imaginable.

My heartfelt condolences to Tom and his family.

The Gulf Spill: The Fine Line

.

It was supposed to be “fail-safe“…

A House energy panel investigation has found that the blowout preventer that failed to stop a huge oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico had a dead battery in its control pod, leaks in its hydraulic system, a “useless” test version of a key component and a cutting tool that wasn’t strong enough to shear through steel joints in the well pipe and stop the flow of oil.

Sometimes there’s a fine line between criminal negligence and shit happens.
