Murder at Gitmo

.

June 2006

US government officials may have conspired to conceal evidence that three Guantánamo Bay inmates could have been murdered during interrogations, according to a six-month investigation by American journalists.

All three may have been suffocated during questioning on the same evening and their deaths passed off as suicides by hanging, the joint investigation for Harper’s Magazine and NBC News has concluded.

The magazine also suggests the cover-up may explain why the US government is reluctant to allow the release of Shaker Aamer, the last former British resident held at Guantánamo, as he is said to have alleged that he was part-suffocated while being tortured on the same evening.

According to an official inquiry by the US navy, whose report was heavily censored before release, each man was found in his cell, hanging from bedsheets, with their hands bound and rags stuffed down their throats.

Under George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, the United States of America became a country that condoned torture.  If there was ever a single reason to close down Gitmo, this is it.  As for those two bums…

Torture Debate…again

.

This is sick.

Fifty-eight percent (58%) of U.S. voters say waterboarding and other aggressive interrogation techniques should be used to gain information from the terrorist who attempted to bomb an airliner on Christmas Day.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 30% oppose the use of such techniques, and another 12% are not sure.

A.) It’s a Rasmussen poll so it needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

B.) If one needs to be told why a civilized nation should never use torture, then they’re beyond salvation.

Gitmo and Torture

Guantanamo http://mariopiperni.com/
.

Congressman Aaron Schock lays out the Republican argument for not moving Gitmo detainees to American soil.  Let me sum it up for you: Americans are scaredy-cats while terrorists are supermen who can leap over tall buildings in a single bound.  Also, torture is good. Any torture.

Schock:  “I don’t believe that we should limit waterboarding – or, quite frankly, any other alternative torture technique – if it means saving Americans’ lives.”

As Bodenner points out at the DailyDish, the main reason for shutting down Guantanamo is “its use as a propaganda tool for terrorist recruitment.”  Why do conservatives have such a difficult time understanding this simple idea?   For as long as Gitmo is left standing, jihadists can point to it as a symbol of American oppression and house of torture. Why let them keep this easy means to recruit more terrorists?

Torture – When Fear Triumphs Over Reason

Torture - America's Shame

Torture - America's Shame

.

When one starts accepting that torture is an acceptable means of interrogation on foreign terrorists, it’s not a great leap to the point where it becomes acceptable to torture Americans.

Neocon Mark Noonan

A terrible event – but I don’t want anyone to call it an “act of violence” or “a terrible tragedy”. It was an attack – one or more men decided with malice to attack a US military base. We need to get right down to the bottom of this – and, liberals, if the stories of accomplices in custody are true, this is where harsh interrogation might be needed: whoever was involved in this most emphatically does not have a right to remain silent.

Despite all the evidence that torture in an ineffective means of obtaining information, the Cheney crowd persists with their hallow claims.

Neocons – a dangerous group who have lost touch with the meaning and essence of America.

The Flip Side Of Cheney on Torture

quoteoftheday

.

A former commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps and a retired commander-in-chief of U.S. Central Command , express their thoughts on torture.

In the fear that followed the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Americans were told that defeating Al Qaeda would require us to “take off the gloves.”  …we knew that was a recipe for disaster.

In light of the irresponsible statements recently made by former Vice President Dick Cheney, however, we feel we must repudiate his dangerous ideas — and his scare tactics.

We have seen how ill-conceived policies that ignored military law on the treatment of enemy prisoners hindered our ability to defeat al Qaeda. We have seen American troops die at the hands of foreign fighters recruited with stories about tortured Muslim detainees at Guantánamo and Abu Ghraib. And yet Cheney and others who orchestrated America’s disastrous trip to “the dark side” continue to assert — against all evidence — that torture “worked” and that our country is better off for having gone there.

[...]

On this solemn day we pause to remember those who lost their lives on 9/11. As our leaders work to prevent terrorists from again striking on our soil, they should remember the fundamental precept of counterinsurgency we’ve relearned in Afghanistan and Iraq: Undermine the enemy’s legitimacy while building our own. These wars will not be won on the battlefield. They will be won in the hearts of young men who decide not to sign up to be fighters and young women who decline to be suicide bombers. If Americans torture and it comes to light — as it inevitably will — it embitters and alienates the very people we need most.

If you can, read the entire op-ed. Perceptive and it destroys Dick Cheney’s credibility even further…assuming there was any credibility left there to be destroyed.
