Rep. Peter King on what to do with those pesky Muslims.
I think there are situations like this where we are afraid of being accused of profiling. The fact is while the overwhelming majority of Muslims are outstanding people, on the other hand 100% of the Islamic terrorists are Muslims, and that is our main enemy today. So while we should not be profiling people because of their religion, at the same time we should not be bending over backwards to somehow keep them off a list.
The entire racial profiling issue is a touchy one and not unlike the torture debate. At one end are those who believe that the end justifies the means and that torture is acceptable if it saves one American life. At the other end are those who understand that the United States is a country of laws and is built, for the most part, on honor and integrity. Once torture and racial profiling become acceptable practices, what is there to prevent the country from sliding down into the same mud pit of depravity which the enemy is accused of wallowing in?
Given the fact that all today’s terrorists appear to be motivated by Islamic-religion-based hatred, there is now no way to avoid profiling. Someone of Islamic background simply has to be viewed with special suspicion. On the other hand, it might be a good idea to work with Islamic religious and political leaders to look for ways to quench the religious-motivated hatred. We’re not about to abandon Israel to destruction, but there may be some things we can do better. Demonizing Islam will make the problem worse. Islam needs to avoid demonizing “infidels” if Muslims don’t like being profiled.
and some Muslims are white. What are they going to do then with their racial profiling….
There is not a 100% solution for safety from extremists. Put a Marshal on every flight and better train the people who screen to look for odd behaviours. And they can certainly individually pat down passengers. Other countries do that and it seems to work just fine.
There is a deeper issue at work here. How do we finesse the difference between peaceful Islam and radical Islamism? How do we figure out who believes which one? If one reads the Koran, it is just as bloody in parts of it as the Bible is in parts of it. One religion has no better claim to peace than the other. There are radicals in Christian fundamentalism as there are radicals in Islam. The history of both is bloody. When we can figure out which belief system a person holds, then we can perhaps more easily determine if they are a threat to our country or our way of life.
But how does one do this? Finding our enemies when we can’t see them by a uniform like in WWII and when in many cases the local populace supports our enemies because of our own foreign policy blunders will prove to be a very difficult proposition. Add to this the worry about becoming the thought police or censoring or torture or wiretapping or other so-called high tech solutions to surveillance leaves one baffled as to how we uphold our Constitutional and Bill of Rights and yet figure out those who don’t live by those rules and rights.
How do you detect, deter and stop those who don’t play by the rules and how far can we stray from the rules to stop their rebellion before we become them? I find myself wishing for the wisdom of Solomon and I pray that those who are tasked with this hydra headed monster of a problem will seek all the wisdom available and will constantly use our Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Uniform Military Code of Justice, the Geneva Conventions, the International Declaration of Human Rights and any other valued documents that have sustained mankind for centuries in solving this moral, ethical, and foreign policy drastic dilemma.
Perhaps I’m being naive but I am going to do my part by living in my life the words to the song “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me”! I know it isn’t much, but if everyone decided to adopt that phrase…maybe, just maybe, things might get better. Here’s to hope for a better world in 2010.
I’m still wondering what this guy was planning to do with all those virgins in the afterlife had he been successful in blowing up the plane, but ending up with no working leftover naughty bits?
@Craig: I was just saying that to my bestest friend 10 minutes ago! I guess I’m not the only one that couldn’t figure that part out.
@ya’ll: What about the other terrorists. This guy acts like ALL terrorists are Muslim, which obviously, is false. We have people praying for the President to die, Timothy Veigh, the Dr Tiller killer & he justifies it saying it was “necessary.” He’s using that as his defense. The radical Muslims say they are fighting God’s enemies. It’s as if they are the same. It’s not difficult to tell them apart. Just compare them to the extreme radicals in the States.
Behavioral profiling is the best solution we have. Ethnic profiling is ineffective. I have a good friend who is originally from Lebanon. He looks a lot like Bin Ladin, but fought in the Christian militia against Hezbollah. Based on the profiling they are suggesting, he’d be stopped every time he flew back to see his family.
Maybe we should hire those guys on Criminal Minds who play agents with the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit! They seem to do better at figuring out these things than the real ones seem to! LOL!
Great idea @Melody Brynne!!! Between the folks on Criminal Minds, Jack Bauer, and all the CSI’s and NCIS’s. They’d have every potential terrorist caught in a heart beat.
That one’s easy! We call for Dr. Kildare, Marcus Welby, MD, ER and St. Elaewhere! I’ll even throw in the crew from Emergency and the medics team from US Navy Seals! I think that takes care of that!
Guess it depends on what they watch! I’m a fan of Nat. Geo., Discovery, Bravo, Ovation, History, MSNBC, CNN, and ION! Nothing like educational and thought provoking television! I even watch PBS!

Now there’s a revelation…
Very appropriate art work, really like it

Seems likes the ends doesn’t justify the means…

Hi Janine! Too bad Perry Mason and Jack Webb couldn’t show up!
Hey Melody! and then Jessica Fletcher, McBride, and Monk would have to help out as well!
And let’s not forget the good folks at Law and Order! Det. Briscoe where are you!?
Well Melody now that we’ve solved that problem for the Government what next shall we tackle for them. I know how about HCR!
That one’s easy! We call for Dr. Kildare, Marcus Welby, MD, ER and St. Elaewhere! I’ll even throw in the crew from Emergency and the medics team from US Navy Seals! I think that takes care of that!
Look there, another problem solved. Why they don’t just call you, I’ll never understand
Smiles! They just don’t watch enough television! Or the history of it! I knew all that classic TV would come in handy!
Classic TV comes in handy! which contridicts the detractors words that TV will rot out our brains!
