Rand Paul’s Broken Toilets

The Tea Party mantra: when in doubt, blame the government.

Senator Rand Paul’s toilets don’t work, and he blames the Department of Energy.

At a hearing of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources on Thursday, Mr. Paul lambasted Kathleen Hogan, deputy assistant secretary for energy efficiency at the Energy Department, telling her that the department’s “hypocrisy” and “busybody nature” has “restricted choices” for consumers rather than made life better for them.

“You don’t care about the consumer really,” Mr. Paul said. “Frankly, my toilets don’t work in my house, and I blame you.”

Rand’s rant has to do with a bill he’s co-sponsored which hopes to repeal the measure which phases in energy efficient light bulbs over the next few years.  Rand views the new standards (passed into law by George Bush in 2007) as further intrusion by government into American’s lives. His belief that conservation should be performed on a voluntary basis and never imposed by government makes Rand pro-choice on light bulbs and no-choice on abortion.

He actually brought up the abortion issue himself suggesting that Ms. Hogan was a hypocrite when it came to choice. Amazing. Only in a teabagger’s twisted and misguided mind could a connection between light bulbs and abortion make sense.

What we have here is the same old crap teabaggers spew out on a regular basis.  Their wish is to return to some imaginary, idyllic time when there were no regulations and the onus fell on individuals and corporations to do the right thing. Extrapolate on that thinking and you’re left with a country with no or few laws concerning,

  • taxes
  • mandatory seat belts
  • drinking and driving
  • speeding
  • industry safety standards
  • drugs
  • gun control
  • smoking in public spaces

…and a zillion other laws and measures which help make a civilized society…well, civilized. This Ayn Rand/bullshit/fantasy/Utopian/nonexistent/never existed country of perfect little citizens and corporations all working their little hearts out and building wealth and greatness in a non-regulated environment is simplistic thinking at its best and lunacy at its worst. Given free reign, the wolves will always slaughter the sheep, the foxes will always raid the chicken coop and big business will always screw you, their mother and the environment from here to Sunday if it helps them make a buck.

And you can carve that last line in granite. Did the banking/Wall street fiasco and last year’s Gulf oil spill not teach the Rand Pauls of America anything?

As for Rand’s supposed busted, energy-efficient toilet which he claims doesn’t save him money and which he has to “flush 10 times before it works”, here’s some advice:  call Joe The Plumber and get it fixed, you ignorant jackass.

Tea Party Claptrap

.

Christopher Hitchens is one of those rare individuals whom I both loathe and love.  The former for his pompous, insensitive and demeaning approach to debate and the latter for his honest, witty and no-nonsense  style. Here is an excerpt from a piece in Vanity Fair where he rips into the Republican party, Glenn Beck and their following of teabagging dolts.

It may be true that the Tea Party’s role in November’s vote was less than some people feared, and it’s certainly true that several of the movement’s elected representatives will very soon learn the arts of compromise and the pork barrel. But then what happens at the next downturn? A large, volatile constituency has been created that believes darkly in betrayal and conspiracy. A mass “literature” has been disseminated, to push the mad ideas of exploded crackpots and bigots. It would be no surprise if those who now adore Beck and his acolytes were to call them sellouts and traitors a few years from now. But, alas, they would not be the only victims of the poisonous propaganda that’s been uncorked. Some of the gun brandishing next time might be for real. There was no need for this offense to come, but woe all the same to those by whom it came, and woe above all to those who whitewashed and rationalized it.

As for the GOP’s ignoring or excusing “the most hateful kind of populist claptrap”…

The poison they’ve helped disseminate will still be in the American bloodstream when the country needs it least.”

There is a price to pay when leadership embraces the more radical elements of its following…if not today then certainly tomorrow.  And in this instance, the larger issue is that the suffering will not be isolated within the confines of the Republican party. An entire nation will be forced to suffer along.

Teabaggers, Bastards and Saving Your Planet

.

I tend to classify climate change deniers into two distinct groups.  a) Self-Serving Bastards and b) Dummies.

Self-serving bastards include executives of the fossil fuel industries as well as the politicians who serve their needs.  Both of these profit financially by promoting the idea that climate change is a hoax.  They do so by funneling millions into propaganda campaigns with the sole purpose of playing down the real threat of global warming.

With no real science of their own to back up their claims, they have been successful in muddying up the waters and creating the false impression that there is a raging debate within the scientific community as to whether man plays a critical role in advancing global warming.  There is no such debate.   Climatologists have the data.  Self-serving Bastards have the lies.

The target audience for Self-serving Bastards is the second group, the Dummies.  Dummies are typically your Fox News groupies who think it reasonable to believe a Beck or Limbaugh (also members of the Self-serving Bastards group) over those of the world’s top scientists.

At a recent debate in Indiana, Democratic Rep. Baron Hill noted that:

“Climate change is real, and man is causing it.  That is indisputable. And we have to do something about it.”

Here is how one Dummy (and a Tea Party founder) reacted to the statement.

“It’s a flat-out lie,” Mr. Dennison said in an interview after the debate, adding that he had based his view on the preaching of Rush Limbaugh and the teaching of Scripture. “I read my Bible,” Mr. Dennison said. “He made this earth for us to utilize.”

Lovely.  The earth is dying and jackasses like Dennison are hanging on tight to the preaching of Rush Limbaugh and the Bible on matters of science.  And you thought you needed another reason to keep teabaggers out of political office.

Skepticism and outright denial of global warming are among the articles of faith of the Tea Party movement…

Those who support the Tea Party movement are considerably more dubious about the existence and effects of global warming than the American public at large, according to a New York Times/CBS News Poll conducted this month. The survey found that only 14 percent of Tea Party supporters said that global warming is an environmental problem that is having an effect now, while 49 percent of the rest of the public believes that it is. More than half of Tea Party supporters said that global warming would have no serious effect at any time in the future, while only 15 percent of other Americans share that view, the poll found.

And 8 percent of Tea Party adherents volunteered that they did not believe global warming exists at all, while only 1 percent of other respondents agreed.

And this:

The oil, coal and utility industries have collectively spent $500 million just since the beginning of 2009 to lobby against legislation to address climate change and to defeat candidates, like Mr. Hill, who support it, according to a new analysis from the Center for American Progress Action Fund, a left-leaning advocacy group in Washington.

Their message appears to have fallen on receptive ears. Of the 20 Republican Senate candidates in contested races, 19 question the science of global warming and oppose any comprehensive legislation to deal with it, according to a National Journal survey.

There are a hundred good reasons why voting Republican this November is a serious mistake but if you needed only one, the battle to save your planet might be it.

Christine O’Donnell and Tea Party Idiocy

.

Michael Gerson.

In Tea Party theory, inexperience is itself seen as a kind of qualification. People like O’Donnell are actually preferable to people like Rove, because they haven’t been tainted by public trust or actual achievement. This is the attitude of the adolescent — the belief that the world began on their thirteenth birthday. It is also a sign of childish political thought.

And a teabagger responds.

Chris O’Donnell has been WRONGLY attacked & the VAST majority of what has been leveled at her, in just one word is: LYING.

it comes down to this: the main-SLIME media & the “ruling class” LIE about everyone “from the outside” 7 always vilifies anyone, who dares to say that the Emperor has no clothes.

IF you wonder why the Tea party is fast becoming the largest grassroots movement in America is that we are ALL so tired of the LIES, empty promises, meaningless platitudes, errant STUPIDITY, crooked dealings, nosey bureaucrats & the just plain DISHONESTY in the government, that we want to “kick the bums all out & start over”.

note to the “party professionals”: we TP folks do NOT want “a seat at the table”; instead, we want the HOUSE (and the SENATE) in the hands of HONEST/DECENT people, who do NOT see themselves as our RULERS, but instead, see themselves as our SERVANTS!

It would be easier to respect teabaggers if the “HONEST” and “DECENT” people they wish to see in Congress actually were honest and decent.  The facts say otherwise.  O’Donnell has lied throughout her ‘political career’ but to people like out teabagging friend above, the lies are instead those of the media and party establishment who would dare point out the discrepancies in O’Donnell’s statements.  It is this which makes people like O’Donnell, Palin and Angle so dangerous.  They have an entire legion of lemmings who would gladly follow their fraudulent and moronic ‘leaders’ over a cliff before listening to any criticism directed at them.

And so the question becomes, how does one deal with an entire group of people who cannot be swayed by fact or reason?  How does one deal with an entire group of people who operate with the political mind of a thirteen-year-old?
