Ben Nelson Supports ‘No Millionaire Left Behind’ Program

.

Are you ready for a shocker?  Ok, brace yourself…

Ben Nelson (D-NE), the most conservative of the Senate’s 59 Democrats, became the first in his party to say he might side with Republicans on the Bush tax cuts, suggesting he might filibuster a tax bill that allowed tax cuts for the rich to expire.

“It would be very hard for me to support that.”

Imagine that…Ben Nelson siding with Republicans </sarcasm>.  Go ahead, sir.  Then explain to the good people of Nebraska who earn less than $250 thousand a year why you allowed their taxes to increase.

Fellow DINO, Joe Lieberman is also opposed to allowing tax cuts for the rich expire but he has a more reasonable position on the issue.

Though he insisted this morning that he would do “everything I can to make sure Congress extends the so-called Bush tax cuts for another year,” Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) made clear this evening that he would not block middle-class tax cuts as leverage for passing a fuller package.

“To me there’s very broad agreement on middle class tax cuts therefore we ought to get it done, and then we can argue about tax cuts for higher income people,” Lieberman said.

I’ve come to the firm conclusion that part of the problem with U.S. style politics is the fact that there are elections every two years which makes it difficult to ever get politicians away from an ‘election’ mindset.  There is always someone in campaign mode with their focus on getting reelected and not on what might be best for the country. Under those conditions, smart and tough decision-making which requires looking beyond a two year time frame, does not come easy.

The Bush Tax Cuts

.

It appears the President is hanging tough on this one.

President Obama on Wednesday will make clear that he opposes any compromise that would extend the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy beyond this year, officials said, adding a populist twist to an election-season economic package that is otherwise designed to entice support from big businesses and their Republican allies.

Mr. Obama’s opposition to allowing the high-end tax cuts to remain in place for even another year or two would be the signal many Congressional Democrats have been awaiting as they prepare for a showdown with Republicans on the issue and ends speculation that the White House might be open to an extension. Democrats say only the president can rally wavering lawmakers who, amid the party’s weakened poll numbers, feel increasingly vulnerable to Republican attacks if they let the top rates lapse at the end of this year as scheduled.

by proposing to extend the rates for the 98 percent of households with income below $250,000 for couples and $200,000 for individuals — and insisting that federal income tax rates in 2011 go back to their pre-2001 levels for income above those cutoffs — he intends to cast the issue as a choice between supporting the middle class or giving breaks to the wealthy.

This should be a no-brainer.  Extending the Bush tax cuts for the top 2% adds 700 billion to the deficit so if Dems back down on this one, it’ll be difficult to respect them in the morning.

Not Every Republican Is A Lying Shill

.

Orrin Hatch, a member of the Senate Finance Committee, had this to say about allowing the Bush tax cuts for the top 2% to expire in January.

“I don’t know anybody who believes that’s a safe or wise thing to do.  And whatever it takes, we should not increase taxes.”

Really?  No one believes it’s a wise thing to do?  Not a  single person?

A number of old Republican hands warning of a deficit crisis have split with the GOP leadership over extending the George W. Bush-era tax cuts.

Sen. George Voinovich (R-Ohio), President Reagan’s budget chief David Stockman and former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan have each argued that extending the tax cuts — set to expire at year’s end — would increase the nation’s $13 trillion debt.

“It’s like tax reductions, you don’t need to pay for them? To me, that’s nonsense,” Voinovich said.

“It’s crisis time, and we’re ready to go over the cliff.”

Voinovich is on his way out so I imagine he felt he had nothing to lose by going against the party line.  Still I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and choose to believe that not every Republican is a hypocritical accomplice to the rich…just most of them.
