All It Takes Is A Handshake To Get The Right-Wing Pissed Off

Marco Rubio - Tea Party's Dummy : http://mariopiperni.com/

Okay, so President Obama is in Johannesburg attending Nelson Mandela’s memorial service, and gives a stirring speech in front of world leaders where he says:

“…in America, and in South Africa, and in countries all around the globe, we cannot allow our progress to cloud the fact that our work is not yet done.  The struggles that follow the victory of formal equality or universal franchise may not be as filled with drama and moral clarity as those that came before, but they are no less important.  For around the world today, we still see children suffering from hunger and disease.  We still see run-down schools.  We still see young people without prospects for the future.  Around the world today, men and women are still imprisoned for their political beliefs, and are still persecuted for what they look like, and how they worship, and who they love.  That is happening today.”

How’s that for lecturing the world’s despots and tyrants on the importance of equality? Predictably, it was not enough to keep Republicans and conservatives from yet another bout of Obama bashing. Before giving the speech, President Obama did the unforgivable – he shook hands with – horrors! – Cuban President Raul Castro. Let the rage begin.

Marco Rubio, the Tea Party’s golden boy:

“If he was going to shake his hand, he should have asked him about those basic freedoms Mandela was associated with that are denied in Cuba.”

Republican Rep. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida.

“It is nauseating.” and “Sometimes a handshake is just a handshake, but when the leader of the free world shakes the bloody hand of a ruthless dictator like Raul Castro, it becomes a propaganda coup for the tyrant.”

In response, let me just quote a TPM reader who cuts through the bullshit in one fell swoop.

Clearly funerals are the happenin’ place for confrontations between world leaders. Obama was raised in Kenya, so he missed the civics class where this is explained. This will be the most outrageous thing possible for 24 hours, until the next most outrageous thing possible happens.

Kevin Drum.

I guess this is going to be the right’s shiny new toy for the week.

Yep.

Rubio’s 15 Minutes Winding Down

Marco Rubio - Golden Boy : http://mariopiperni.com/

After getting his ass kicked by the Tea Party for dabbling with immigration reform, watching Marco Rubio struggle to make himself relevant once again has become a sorry spectacle. Here’s his latest attempt.

In a letter sent Tuesday, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) demanded that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services cancel a planned $8.7 million television ad buy to promote Obamacare.

“This blatant misuse of federal dollars to promote a fundamentally flawed law is extremely concerning, especially considering the extensive unknowns surrounding the coming launch and implementation of ObamaCare,” Rubio wrote in the letter, addressed to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

Pathetic.

Whether Rubio truly believes that the Affordable Care Act is fundamentally flawed matters not. The facts are that the law was passed by Congress, signed by the President and affirmed by the Supreme Court. So, with no due respect to Mr. Rubio, he can STFU. After the countless dollars and time that Republicans have spent smearing the ACA by way of lies and distortions, the government has every right to set the record straight. In fact, they have an obligation to do so and inform the public on how the new law affects their lives.

Rubio might have once been the golden savior in waiting preparing to lead conservatives to glory in 2016. No longer. Any creds he might have had as a serious presidential candidate vanished in his refusal to stand up to the mindless Tea Party madness that is ripping his party to shreds.  Rubio is now nothing more than another clown doing his best to fit himself into the Republican clown car along with the likes of Cruz and Paul and Ryan and Santorum and every other delusional winger with allusions of grandeur.

Here’s the letter I’d love to see Kathleen Sebelius send Rubio. (-snitched from a TPM reader)

From The Office of Kathleen Sebelius

To: The Honorable Senator Marco Rubio
CC: Ted Cruz, John Boehner, Mitch McConnell and every other Republican member of Congress

Dear Senator,

Fuck you.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Sebelius,
Secretary of Health and Human Services

There you go.

Marco Romney

Marco Romney : MarcoRubio / MittRomney http://mariopiperni.com/

Daily Kos takes a look ahead to Marco Rubio’s Republican response to President Obama’s State of the Union address tonight.

Okay, so Marco Rubio will propose tax reform (just like Mitt Romney), more digging and drilling for oil and gas (just like Mitt Romney), and some sort of tax benefit for job training (just like Mitt Romney). He’ll also accuse President Obama of wanting nothing but big government and of opposing our enterprise system (just like Mitt Romney). And, finally, he’ll claim that by raising taxes on wealthy people, President Obama is trying to hurt middle-class families (just like Mitt Romney).

In other words, Mitt Romney is basically giving the Republican response to the State of the Union tonight, except this time, it’ll be translated into Spanish.

Correct. New face, same message. The Republican hope is that their current pretty-faced messenger will somehow be able to sway the masses in ways that their last one was unable to do. And to do it without changing the message much. Good luck with that.

It’s going to take a lot more than the words of a charismatic Latino to change around Republican fortunes.

UPDATE

Today, Rubio voted against reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. You can count on Dems bringing up that bit of information in 2016 should Rubio become the Republican nominee.

Marco Rubio’s Idiot Quote of the Day

Mitt Romney has twisted himself into a pretzel on numerous occasions defending his criticism of the Affordable Care Act in light of his own Massachusetts health care law which was the model for the ACA. His main argument against the individual mandate has been to claim that while it was the right thing to do for his state, it was the wrong approach at the national level. Why? Just because, that’s why. Romney won’t tell. He wants you to just take his word for it.

Now one of his surrogates, Marco Rubio, has put his own ridiculous twist in defending the Romney individual mandate.

But what a big difference. He supported it on the state level. Which means if you didn’t like it in Massachusetts, you could move to another state.

Could Republican politicians be any more out of touch with regular folk? Who exactly is Rubio referring to when he talks about people quitting their jobs, packing their bags, leaving family and friends behind and moving out of state over an issue like individual mandates?

It boggles the mind to think of how well Republicans have bamboozled their followers into setting aside all reason and common sense and get them to vote for sleazebag politicians of the Rubio/Romney type – politicians who work against the very interests of middle class America.

Marco Rubio – Just Another Weasel

Romney’s VP-in-waiting, Marco Rubio, is perfecting the conservative sleaze play.

He has proposed his version of the Dream Act in which people who entered the country illegally as children will be allowed to remain in the U.S. if they attend college or enter the military. It differs from the Democrat’s original Dream Act in that it does not lead to citizenship. It would instead issue non-immigrant visas allowing certain undocumented immigrants to remain in the country.

Unfortunately for Rubio, his Dream Act Lite which was concocted as a way to gain favor with Hispanics and con them into voting for the Republican Party in November, is meeting resistance within the GOP where a hard line stance on the issue of illegal immigration is still the order of the day.

John Boehner:

There’s always hope. I did talk to Sen. Rubio about his idea, and he gave me some particulars about how this would work. I found it of interest. But the problem with this issue is that we’re operating in a very hostile political environment and to deal with a very difficult issue like this I think it would be difficult at best.

Translation: Congress’ Tea Party wingnuts will never vote for any plan which proposes anything other than herding up all undocumented workers and shipping them back home in cattle cars.

So with his Dream Act doomed to failure, Rubio turns to conservative’s tried and proven fix of relying on low information voters to believe anything they say. In this case, it’s to lay the blame for failure to pass the Rubio Dream Act on President Obama. Of course.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) is angling to blame President Obama for the looming failure of his watered-down DREAM Act, and the White House is strongly objecting to that implication, insisting that Rubio’s problem is with his own party, not the president.

“The notion that somehow the president or Democrats would be the roadblock to any progress on immigration is ridiculous,” a White House official told TPM. “If this proposal fails, the reason will be the Republicans.”

Conservatives have no shame. Not only is Rubio hoping to lay blame on Obama for his own party’s extremism on immigration (and every other issue) but he’s been blatantly bullshitting his way through this while attempting to sell his plan to both Spanish and English-language audiences.

…Rubio has emphasized different aspects of his plan to different audiences. During interviews on English-language media, for instance, he has emphasized that his proposal does not include citizenship; while appearing on the Spanish-language La Opinion, he played up the fact that it opens up possible “access to citizenship.”

More Rubio sleaze on a different issue.

Senator Marco Rubio, the Republican rumored possible running mate for presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney today voted against the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which has passed time and time again in a bipartisan fashion for decades. this year the VAWA became a partisan nightmare for Republicans, who opposed extending protections to LGBT people, immigrants, and Native Americans. Because violence against some women is deplorable, but apparently, not all women are equal in the eyes of the GOP.

Meanwhile, the man who claims he isn’t interested in the VP job has been hanging out with Romney in Pennsylvania and recently moved up publication of his autobiography from the fall to June. Jeff Parker nailed this one.

Here’s hoping Hispanic voters see right through this self-serving, slimy politician.
