Islamophobia Ushers In A New McCarthyism

Replace McCarthy with King. Do the same with Communist and Muslim and it’s 1950 all over again.

On Thursday, Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), the chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, will hold hearings on what he calls the ”radicalization” of members of the American Muslim community. King, who has previously called for the New York Times to be tried for treason and for WikiLeaks to be listed as a terrorist organization, has never shied away from confronting terrorist threats wherever he sees them…

I’m not sure what King hopes to accomplish with his hearings unless it’s to further inflame anti-Muslim sentiment.  You can never have too much of that, I imagine.  At a time when one in three Americans believe that Muslims in America have become radicalized (don’t ask them for proof, they don’t have any) and bigots everywhere protest the building of mosques in the U.S., it would seem that King’s hearings only gives credence to Islamopobic beliefs.  After all, you don’t have a hearing unless there is clear and present danger, right?

Peter King is not seeking truth.  He’s looking for a ‘See! I told you I was right!‘ moment.  Asking Muslims to defend themselves against mass hysteria brought on by conservative politicians and media, is the same as asking an innocent person to defend themselves against charges of sexual harassment. The fact that one has to defend themselves against ugly accusations makes them damaged goods no matter how innocent they might be.

So, who is this hearing for? Well, it’s for people like Catherine Mann-Grandy, wife of former Republican Congressman Fred Grandy (yes, the actor from The Love Boat).  She appeared on Fox to warn Americans that the country will be “lost” if people “don’t wake up soon and applaud” Peter King’s Muslim radicalization hearings.

“The real problem is that none of us seem to understand there is self-jihad, civilization jihad, going on in our country every single day, 24/7,” Catherine Mann-Grandy said. “This is owned and orchestrated by the Muslim Brotherhood.”

“This is the same Muslim Brotherhood that the President invited to the speech in Cairo, that Denis McDonough, a top security advisor went out to a mosque on Sunday to reach out to the Muslim community before the Peter King hearings and say, ‘we are not blaming you all for a few bad events that have happened,’ like, I guess, Major Nadal Hassan shooting a bunch of people and the Times Square bomber and underpants bomber, and all those things.”

“Those kind of lone wolf things that we try to put together — and media cannot seem to figure out — it’s orchestrated,” Mann-Grandy said. “It’s all orchestrated by the Muslim Brotherhood.”

“If you look at the Holy Land foundation trial, you will find all of the evidence, including a five-stage plan,” Mann-Grandy said. “We’re at three now. You know what that is? It’s coerce the media. The fifth stage is total jihad.”

To feed his own delusions and bigotry (and those of people like Catherine Mann-Grandy), Peter King is going to have his grand hearing in Congress and single-handedly prevent the fifth stage of total jihad. The man’s a freakin’ American hero.

Homophobic, Muslim-Hating Politicians – Guess Where?

More policy from Tennessee Republicans who keep on lowering the bar on what it takes to be an ignorant bigot.

A proposed bill in the Tennessee Legislature wants to spell out how schools can introduce sexuality – and only heterosexuality – to your child. It’s sponsored by State Sen. Stacey Campfield and Rep. Bill Dunn – both Republicans from Knoxville.

At the heart of the bill is a move to prevent children in elementary and middle schools to have classes that discuss sexual orientation other than heterosexuality.

Gay rights activists say it’s a ploy to further discriminate against them.
Those who support the bill say it’s about having age appropriate curriculum.

It’s not a ploy.  It’s an open and blatant move to further marginalize gays and lesbians.  It’s good old-fashioned homophobia.  After all, if you’re not even allowed to say the word “gay” until you’re old enough, it’s got to be bad for you, right?

Doing their best to spread hate as far and wide as possible, Republicans in this state have also set aim on demonizing Islam. While the Islamic Center in Murfreesboro, Tennessee controversy rattles on in the background, state legislators are joining Texas, Georgia and other states in outlawing Sharia law ’cause you know it’s just a matter of time before them evil Muslim people with the funny names find a way to prevent the good folks of Tennessee from feasting on their bacon bits.

Refraining from eating pork? Giving alms to the poor? These could become criminal activities in Tennessee, where a proposed law would make adherence to Sharia — or Islamic law — illegal and punishable with jail time.

While a number of other states have filed legislation seeking to keep Sharia out of the courts, Tennessee is going one giant step further by attempting to outlaw it entirely.

Senate Bill 1028, introduced by State Sen. Bill Ketron, gives the state Attorney General authority to designate “Sharia organizations,” defined as “two (2) or more persons conspiring to support, or acting in concert in support of, sharia or in furtherance of the imposition of sharia within any state or territory of the United States.” Anyone who provides material support or resources to a designated Sharia organization could be charged with a felony and face up to 15 years in jail.

The bill states its intent is not to outlaw free religion, or the practice of Islam. It claims that Sharia presents a real threat to Tennessee.

See what happens when you give power to religious bigots with the IQ of a cucumber?

Oh well, at least Tennessee is still a safe haven for families out to enjoy a lovely Sunday picnic in the park…

Peter King’s Campaign Of Hate

Did the McCarthy era witch hunts teach these people nothing?

Next month, House Homeland Security Committee chairman Peter King (R-NY) will hold hearings on the domestic threat posed by Muslim Americans. Echoing McCarthyist rhetoric of the 1950s, King recently argued that Muslims aren’t “American” when it comes to war.

This week, King went on the Laura Ingraham Show to discuss his upcoming investigation. The guest host asked King how many American mosques he thought were “infected” by “radical jihad sentiment.” King, who in the past declared that there are “too many mosques in this country” and called Muslims “an enemy living amongst us,” was unabashed in his belief that “over 80 percent of mosques in this country are controlled by radical Imams”:

In fact

A two-year study by a group of academics on American Muslims and terrorism concluded that contemporary mosques are actually a deterrent to the spread of militant Islam and terrorism. The study was conducted by professors with Duke’s Sanford School of Public Policy and the University of North Carolina. It disclosed that many mosque leaders had put significant effort into countering extremism by building youth programs, sponsoring antiviolence forums and scrutinizing teachers and texts.

Where else but under the GOP small tent would haters of gays, non-Christians, immigrants, blacks and minorities converge for their perpetual hate-fest activities? There’s simply no other way to view it: there exists an element within the Republican party which fosters hate and divisiveness of the sort displayed by Mr. King.

And where is the leadership within the GOP condemning the words and actions of Peter King – a man who has in effect declared all American Muslims worthy of suspicion as he raises Islamophobic fervor another notch.

Have these people forsaken all sense of decency and honesty in their quest for political gain?  Yes, of course they have. It’s what these small-minded bastards do.

Republicans Eat Their Own – Again

.

Even when a Republican politician does the right thing, right-wing bigots can’t help themselves but let their hate get the best of them.

Last week, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (R) announced seven judgeship appointments to the New Jersey Superior Court, including the appointment of Sohail Mohammed to serve on the court in Passaic County.

[...]

Several prominent anti-Muslim voices on the right have reacted with characteristic vitriol to the elevation of a Muslim in the U.S. justice system, calling Mohammed “the enemy”

Typical of the venomous reaction from the right was chief Muslim hater, Pam Geller.

Governor Christie looked and sounded like he could be presidential. He’s not. He’s in bed with the enemy. All the other stuff doesn’t matter if you don’t have your freedom…what a crushing disappointment. He is off the list. The GOP field for 2012 is narrowing.

And typical of the reaction from Geller’s readers was this:

UNBELIEVABLE!!!

We WERE ATTACKED AND INVADED ON 9/11/2001!!

Got it. America was attacked on 9/11 by terrorists. The terrorists were Muslim. All Muslims are therefore the enemy. Any politician fraternizing with the enemy is…well, is fraternizing with the enemy making them unsuitable for public office…at least in the eyes of Islamophobes who appear to occupy an ever increasing portion of the conservative movement.

Clearly, Geller is a bigot and an asshole. No surprise there after watching her spearhead the drive to stop the construction of a mosque a few blocks from Ground Zero in New York. She is not alone in her criticism of Christie for appointing a Muslim to the bench. Jonathan S. Tobin wrote, “appointment of Sohail Mohammed to the court shows that his [Christie's] judgment on the issue of support for terrorism is highly questionable.”

And Christie was one of their heroes – a tough guy conservative who could duke it out with anyone.  Now conservatives like Geller regard him as the enemy.  What a crazy bunch.

You can add Muslim-hater to the list of qualifications if one wishes to run as a Republican in 2012.

Right-Wing Hate Marches On

.

Led by the Republican party and its irresponsible leaders, right-wing hate and fear-mongering has now led to this.

Slices of bacon were laid down on a brink walkway to the Florence Islamic Center in Florence, S.C. on Sunday in a manner that spelled out “PIG CHOPS.”  The incident — evidently aimed the center because of the Islamic dietary restrictions against pork — is just the latest in a string of anti-Muslim episodes around the country.

This is not going to end in a nice way.
