It’s Not Hard To Figure Out Why Republicans Are the Losers

Via Slate’s Tom Scocca.

If you’re a Republican strategist with an eye on winning elections down the road, the above chart has got to be a concern. As Scocca points out, Republicans made the mistake of taking the perceived enthusiasm for Romney in the “white bubble” as representative of the electorate as a whole. That was a fatal error.

Simple minds like that of Bill O’Reilly’s believe it’s just a matter of Democratic voters wanting “things” and “stuff”.

[I]t’s a changing country, the demographics are changing, it’s not a traditional America anymore. And there are 50 percent of the voting public who want stuff. They want things. And who is going to give them things? President Obama. He knows it and he ran on it.

And, whereby, 20 years ago President Obama would have been roundly defeated by an establishment candidate like Mitt Romney. The white establishment is now the minority. And the voters, many of them, feel that this economic system is stacked against them and they want stuff.

You’re going to see a tremendous Hispanic vote for President Obama. Overwhelming black vote for President Obama and women will probably break President Obama’s way. People feel that they are entitled to things and which candidate, between the two, is going to give them things?

They really don’t get it.

Scocca:

The white establishment, undone by hordes of various-colored people who demand stuff. Even as he admitted the white bloc was too small to win, O’Reilly still saw the winning side as an undifferentiated counter-bloc, rather than a coalition of Americans.

Obama won the Latino vote, 71 to 27. He also won the Asian vote, 73 to 26. Those voters all look the same to the losers. That’s why they’re the losers.

And as long as the GOP chooses to listen to the O’Reilly’s and ignores the David Frums of the party, you can count on Tuesday’s election results being repeated every four years. I don’t agree with everything Frum says in the clip below (“Romney could have been a really good president“), but he does zero in on the biggest problem facing the GOP today with this line.

Republicans have been fleeced and exploited and lied to by a conservative entertainment complex.

In a majority white nation, Fox and conservative media have played a big role in exploiting xenophobic Americans into supporting the GOP. With the changing demographic landscape of the country, that same “entertainment complex” will be the downfall of the party.

Obama Wins!

Barack Obama - President - http://mpiperni.com/

Was it ever in doubt?

Although every poll and statistical study had Barack Obama ahead these last many months, politics can be screwy and you can’t ever be sure.  Obama killed it and he crushed Romney.

I’m not watching Fox but the story is that Karl Rove had a total meltdown and is insisting that Fox take back it’s projection that Obama won. Rove believes that Ohio was not yet lost as of 11:30 PM EST. ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN and Fox all disagree with the mad man. Amazing…as is the Romney campaign’s refusal to accept the Ohio result as of this writing. The wingers are refusing to accept that they lost to the black guy…again.

Love it.

My joy this evening comes as much from the Romney loss as it does from the Obama victory and knowing that heads are exploding throughout wingnuttia.

Great night.

The Swing-States of America

Map - Swing States : http://mariopiperni.com/

Every four years, the same handful of states get to determine who sits in the Oval Office. In the next two weeks, tens of millions of dollars and tens of thousands of volunteers will pour into these states (notably, Ohio and Iowa) in a frantic race to the finish.

Every four years, the fate of the United States of America gets determined by the United Swing-States of America. Strange.

Latest swing-state numbers here.

Wingers, Empty Chairs and Shifting Demographics

Obama - Hispanic / http://mariopiperni.com/

I was doing some early morning reading on reaction from last night’s great start to the Democratic convention and came across this bit of delusional nonsense from a HotAir reader.

One HUGE contrast between these two conventions:

The conservative “bench” is full of up and coming superstars (like Rubio, Ryan, Mia Love, etc) which will carry us through the next decade or more.

The communist “bench” is full of… nothing. Empty chairs.

Wingers like this guy above are just not getting it. It doesn’t matter how many Rubios, Ryans or Mia Loves Republicans have. As long as they cling on to oppressive and draconian policies (Arizona immigration law, abortion and vaginal probes, defunding Planned Parenthood, privatizing Social Security…to name a few), they’re going to lose, if not in the short term than certainly down the road. And it all has to do with shifting demographics.

The only majority vote Republicans can currently count on is that of older white males and the 65+ segment of the population…both of which are shrinking as a share of the electorate.  Every other demographic group – blacks, Hispanics, Asians, young people, women, LGBT – lean Democratic. And furthermore, each are increasing their share of the electorate.

Here are stats from the Pew Research Center (2011) which have conservatives like Jeb Bush warning Republicans to “stop acting stupid” and to start reaching out to Hispanics.

Hispanics are the largest minority group on the nation’s college campuses, a milestone first achieved last year. But as their growth among all college-age students continues to outpace other groups, Hispanics are now, for the first time, the largest minority group among the nation’s four-year college and university students. And for the first time, Hispanics made up one-quarter (25.2%) of 18- to 24-year-old students enrolled in two-year colleges.

In the nation’s public schools, Hispanics also reached new milestones. For the first time, one-in-four (24.7%) public elementary school students were Hispanic… Among all pre-K through 12th grade public school students, a record 23.9% were Hispanic in 2011.

Throw in a few U.S. Census numbers…

  • there are 50.5 million Hispanics in the U.S
  • Hispanics make up 16.3 percent of the U.S population
  • the fastest growing minority group in the U.S. is the Hispanic population. Between 2000 and 2010 it grew at a rate of 43%

and this…

  • by the year 2050, the Hispanic population in the U.S. will be at 132.8 million – 30 percent of the total population

Combine all of this with the knowledge that Democrats picked up 67 percent of the Hispanic vote in 2008 and are currently favoring Obama to Romney at a 64 to 31 percent rate…and you understand why dumping a few truckloads of Rubio clones on to the political scene won’t help Republicans, no matter how many “empty chairs” wingers believe make up the “communist bench.”

Fox News Latino sums up the impending doom facing Republicans.

Romney also faces a challenge that the GOP will likely continue to face in coming years: shifting demographics.

Put simply, the groups that support President Barack Obama most strongly — blacks, Hispanics, young people, unmarried women — have been growing as a share of the electorate. Those who support Mitt Romney the most — white working men and older people — have not.

This demographic tide is so strong that some Democrats came away from their 2008 victory feeling that a political reordering was in the works that could be as important as the New Deal realignment that ushered in a generation of Democratic strength after the Great Depression.

Lies, Deceit and Corporate Politics

Harold Simmons is an 80-year old billionaire. Harold Simmons has donated $18 million to Republican super PACs in the last year. Harold Simmons hates President Barack Obama with a passion.

Any of these Republicans would make a better president than that socialist, Obama,” Simmons told the Journal, in what is the piece’s most provocative quote. “Obama is the most dangerous American alive … because he would eliminate free enterprise in this country.”

Alright, got it. Barack Obama is a capitalist-hating socialist and Simmons is a businessman, sorry, job-creator, and in that regard has every right to spend all he wishes (so says the Roberts’ SCOTUS) to prevent the President from winning a second term. Few, I believe, would fault a man for taking care of his own best interests…except that in the period 2006 to 2011, Harold Simmons’ net worth went from $4 billion to $10 billion. Not bad when considering that those profits were made in the midst of the worst economic downturn in 80 years. Now that the economy is slowly recovering under Chairman Obama’s rule, I imagine Simmons is concerned about his bottom line.

Harold Simmons is a delusional, lying billionaire who, in 2004, contributed $4 million to one of the largest, most blatant campaigns of lies and deceit ever to take place in U.S. presidential politics- the Swiftboater’s takedown of John Kerry. And now, in 2012, Simmons and his fellow millionaires and billionaires are doing it once again, this time with the help of the Citizen’s United ruling which has made it that much easier to pour millions into another campaign of lies and deceit.

Welcome to corporate politics by the unelected in 2012. Isn’t it pretty?
