Yes, I know. Politics. Lies. Horse. Carriage and the rest of it. Got it. But there’s lying and then there’s LYING.
Here’s the thing about blatant lies of this sort: hardcore conservatives and Republicans will vote for Romney no matter what he says or does. These people will hear whatever agrees with their beliefs and filter out the rest. Same goes for people who just don’t like or trust Barack Obama be it for his politics or his skin color (there’s a big overlap between this group and the previous one).
As for hardcore liberals and Democrats, they’ll vote for Obama no matter what lies or truth are said about him.
So who does that leave? The apathetic and the informed who have no allegiance to either party. The lies will work on the apathetic and uninformed (assuming they actually get to hear the lies) but they’ll fail to influence the informed.
All this to say that an uninformed and misinformed electorate works to the benefit of the least honest (and most desperate) of the candidates. Hello Mitt Romney.
His party just suffered staggering losses, his no-drama West Wing is besieged and a few outlier Democrats are even demanding he surrender to fate, assume the fetal position and embrace a one-term presidency.
But when President Barack Obama meets with Speaker-to-be John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in the White House next week, he’ll walk in as the most popular politician in the room — which still counts for something.
And what trifecta of events do some view as necessary for a Democratic victory in 2012? Strong messaging from the President, an economic turnaround and a presidential run by Sarah Palin. I don’t believe the last one is a necessity. If the first two get done, then a Palin run would simply be icing on the cake.
The other determining factor for 2012 is the fact that Republicans have won back control of the House. Being the Party of No was an easier task when they held no legislative power. Now that the dynamics have changed, justifying their obstructionist ways to a public yearning for change has just gotten a bit more difficult.

I love posting the above illustration because it pisses off right-wing kooks as much as it does. No other illustration of mine has generated more hate mail than this one. Obama Derangement Syndrome runs deep.
New York Times interview with Barack Obama. A good read.
And so what I feel good about is the fact that even as we were in the midst of crisis, we were still able to keep our eye on some of these bigger long-term problems and have started moving the country in the right direction.
Now, there was a price to pay for that, and that price was primarily political. If I had not had a crisis before me, we wouldn’t have started with a stimulus bill, which was easy to caricature as a big-spending liberal agenda. I certainly would not have had to shore up the banking system in a way that rightly generated a lot of frustration among people who wondered why it was that the very folks who caused the financial crisis seemed to be landing on their feet and getting help from the government.

Something that I have learned over the last couple of years is that I have to make decisions based on the long view. And I have to suppress my own desire for a short-term fix if I’m going to be able to lead the country effectively over the long term… I will keep on making that case, and I think that to point — to quote my vice president — I believe that voters are going to stop comparing me to the Almighty and compare me to the alternative.
The problem is one of having enough people understand that very point in a time of deep recession – a time when the President faces an opposition more concerned with getting back into power than they are about the welfare of the people they were elected to serve.

If you missed Barack Obama’s extraordinary speech yesterday at the Gen44 Summit, then you might want to give it a listen. It will remind you why you voted for this man.
“I believe in a country that rewards hard work and responsibility, a country where we look after one other, a country that says I am my brother’s keeper, I am my sister’s keeper, I’m going to give a hand up, join hands with folks and try to lift all of us up so we all have a better future, not just some – but all of us. That’s what I believe.”
If you believe in the “just some” approach, then the Republican party should have your vote.
If you believe that health care is a privilege and not a right, then vote GOP.
If you believe in less regulation for Wall Street and corporations, vote GOP.
If you believe in further erosion of the middle class, vote GOP.
If you believe that science is a dirty word, vote GOP.
If you believe that gays and lesbians are second class citizens not entitled to the same rights as the heterosexual community, vote GOP.
If you believe in a theocratic state, vote GOP.
If you believe that the eight years of fiscal and social policy set out by George W. Bush is the way to go, then vote GOP.
The future of your country is at stake and your choices have never been clearer.
