The Ugliest Part of America

The Marine Corps said Wednesday that it is investigating the origins of a video on the Internet that purports to show Marines in combat gear urinating on the corpses of three Taliban insurgents.

The brief video, which runs for less than a minute, began circulating on Web sites early Wednesday. It depicts four Marines laughing as they relieve themselves while standing over three prostrate bodies.

Responsible parties have condemned the actions of this small group of soldiers.

Marine Corps:

“The actions portrayed are not consistent with our core values and are not indicative of the character of the Marines in our Corps.”

U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta who has ordered an investigation:

“I condemn it in the strongest possible terms.”

Senator John McCain:

Here’s a handful of obviously undisciplined young people of the hundred and some thousand Marines that we have. And it makes me so sad. There should be an investigation and these young people should be punished, but it does great damage. It makes me so sad.

And then there’s this bit of vile trash by the bigoted witch of hate, Pam Geller.

Would anyone have CAIRed if Marines urinated on dead Nazi soldiers during WWII? (Anyone besides CAIR and nazis, that is).

I love these Marines. Perhaps this is the infidel interpretation of the Islamic ritual of washing and preparing the body for burial.

What a low-life. And if you wonder what kind of trash Geller attracts, the comment section of her site will give you a clue or two.

I’ve never been prouder to be an American!

…who cares about a bunch of jihadi women-killers? Piss on them? I’d piss on them when they were alive and THEN drop the hammer on them. Why? Because they are EVIL.

I’ve abstracted this video to pure symbolism. It’s actually more gratifying for me to view it as America pissing on The Taliban or Civilization pissing on Islam.

I wish I could rent billboards all over the country and play this 24-7-365. (Do billboards have sound? If they did I’d have the Star Spangled Banner playing along with this.)

If you had to give a face to the ugliest, most ignorant and least tolerant part of America, you need look no further than Geller and her pea-brained followers.

End the Wars

Bob Herbert makes the argument for ending the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

What we have in Afghanistan is a war that most Americans believe is not worth fighting — and certainly not worth raising taxes to pay for. President Obama has not made a compelling case for the war and has set a deadline for the start of withdrawal that seems curiously close to the anticipated start of his 2012 campaign for a second term.

It’s time to bring the curtain down for good on these tragic, farcical wars. The fantasy of democracy blossoming at the point of a gun in Iraq and spreading blithely throughout the Middle East has been obliterated. And it’s hard to believe that anyone buys the notion that the U.S. can install a successful society in the medieval madness of Afghanistan.

For those who haven’t noticed, we have a nation that needs rebuilding here at home. Maybe we could muster some shared sacrifice on that front.

It’s time to bring the troops back, and nurse the wounded, and thank them all for their extraordinary service. It’s time to come to our senses and put the lunatic’s manual aside.

What An Honest Conservative Sounds Like

David Frum speaks out on Michael Steele’s ludicrous comments concerning Obama and Afghanistan.

Maybe as time passes people change their minds. Fine. But if they do change their minds, they should acknowledge that is what they have done. They should not revise history so that a strategy that was broadly supported by all becomes “Obama’s war.”

Maybe the strategy is genuinely wrong. Maybe the Afghanistan commitment is not worth the costs. Maybe instituting a stable central government in Afghanistan is an over-ambitious project. Again: fine. But with the guns firing, that’s a point of view to advocate in a serious and considered way, as part of a debate over national interests, not to score political points. The debate should be aimed at finding a resolution in Afghanistan that is maximally successful for the U.S. and partners, not the way that is maximally humiliating to the president. Obama may fail in Afghanistan. But if he does, the whole country fails with him.

Frum continues to be a thinking man’s conservative and if there were a few more Frums and a lot less Becks and Limbaughs, the national debate on issues could truly be an exchange of ideas and not the circus of idiocy it has become.

As for Steele, he put out a statement in an attempt to clarify his position and let his fellow conservatives know what he really meant. In truth, Steele is about to be forced out as RNC chairman. He knows he’s blundered for what will probably be the last time.

Dull As Steele

Either Michael Steele is a very stupid man or this is just another example of Obama bashing – no matter what this President does, including following up on Bush policy, Republicans will find a way to knock him for it.

Steele at a Republican fundraiser:

“The McChrystal incident, to me, was very comical. And I think it’s a reflection of the frustration that a lot of our military leaders have with this Administration and their prosecution of the war in Afghanistan.”

“Keep in mind again, federal candidates, this was a war of Obama’s choosing. This is not something the United States had actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in.“

How any Republican “federal candidate” sitting in that audience and hearing Steele speak those hysterically ridiculous words could possibly not feel their intelligence insulted is beyond me. I am more convinced than ever that being a loyal Republican these days requires one to check their brain at the door. I can think of no other rational explanation.
