As the angry right continues their attacks on Supreme court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor, there comes a single voice of reason.
One of the top Republicans in the Senate, John Cornyn, is repudiating recent comments by Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich which claimed that Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor is a racist.
“I think it’s terrible… This is not the kind of tone any of us want to set when it comes to performing our constitutional responsibilities of advise and consent.”
Cornyn dismissed Limbaugh and Gingrich, adding: “Neither one of these men are elected Republican officials. I just don’t think it’s appropriate. I certainly don’t endorse it. I think it’s wrong.”
I’m having a hard time figuring out what the conservative game plan is in regards to Sotomayor. Asking questions about her past rulings is fair game and part of the vetting process. Making outrageous claims that she’s a racist is counterproductive to republican hopes of regaining power in 2012. Hispanics and independents are not impressed.
Here’s some of what Cornyn thinks is “wrong”.

John Cornyn defending Sonia Sotomayor? So out of character for this ultra conservative pillar of the GOP. Ah…..¿no será el voto latino? Muchos mexicanos en Texas.
Don’t be fooled by Cornyn. He’s part of a republican committee which is setting strategy for 2010/2012. He just happens to be smart enough to realize that knocking Sotomayor on grounds of racism is detrimental to the future of his party.
Maybe they’re starting to wise up. From this morning’s Meet the Press.
Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee, had effusive words of praise for Sotomayor.
“Let me just say that this lady has got a good record, as Pat said, for a judge,” said Sessions, while sitting next to Leahy. “Prosecutor, lawyer, judge, district trial judge, federal judge–she’s smart, she’s capable.”
Sessions didn’t end there, adding, “She’s got the kind of background you would look for, almost an ideal mix of private practice, trial prosecution and circuit judge. That’s strong in her favor.”
Hypocrites. Do the names Miguel Estrada or Clarence Thomas ring a bell? Also, TOTUS wanted to filibuster Alito.
The “Right” just wants judges who base their rulings on the law and the Constitution rather than pushing for an outcome of letting their own politics come into play. Alas, that is too much to ask for from the “Saul Alinsky” President.
We all know that had a white man said what she said he would be out of the running. I hope that you can at least admit that to yourselves even if you will not admit it to any conservatives.
At least you people need to understand your ideological enemies. You guys are more comfortable with caricatures of your opponents, perhaps you cannot handle the truth.
This is why we conservatives and libertarians oppose her:
