It seems the San Francisco Board of Supervisors has accomplished what the Hamburglar never could. They’ve made off with McDonald’s fare.
The supes today passed an ordinance that will require meals to meet nutritional guidelines if restaurants wish to include a toy with the food purchase.
More importantly, the supes passed the so-called “Happy Meal Ban” by an 8-3 vote — meaning it can survive a promised veto from Mayor Gavin Newsom. That’s right: San Francisco done banned the Happy Meal.
This is enough to have one seriously consider converting to some offshoot of conservatism that preaches small government and less intrusion in people’s lives. Seriously, should one not be allowed to take their little ones to McDonald’s once a month and have them enjoy a Happy Meal without government intervention? Yes I understand the well-intentioned reasoning behind the San Francisco ordinance which is meant to protect children from corporate greed and marketing schemes. But dammit, it is parents who should be making that call and not city councils.
As a dyed-in-the-wool liberal I have a full appreciation for the role government plays in the lives of the people it is meant to serve. There is a definite need for government to put in place measures which safeguard its citizens from self-serving corporate interests. I get that part. But the line has to be drawn somewhere. Having government educate families on proper nutrition is fine and good. Having government control what families feed their children is an entirely different issue.

Yesterday was a travel day. I had a 6AM flight so I naturally began packing at midnight. Dumb, I know, but that’s how we procrastinators roll. There are a few things in life I don’t enjoy (cutting the grass, painting and shopping to name but three) and packing is one of them. The strange thing is that I’m actually a great packer – quick and efficient – but there is something about gearing myself up mentally to get the process started that I find difficult. I think it has to do with having to spend time deciding what I’m bringing that I find most troublesome which is why I always find the return trip packing an easier task. You bring back whatever you brought. Nice.
Anyway, after an hour of sleep, I arrived at the airport at 4:15, checked in and had my first go at one of those full body X-ray scanners. Yippee. The process is quick and painless and certainly beats a full-body pat down which is what they subject you to should you refuse the X-ray scanner.
I still hear people complaining about airport security as being too intrusive given the check-in waiting times, removing of shoes, x-ray or rummaging of one’s carry-on luggage, metal detectors and now full body scanners. Certainly it’s a bit of a hassle and travel would be somewhat more pleasant if we were not subjected to any of the security measures they put us through. But it’s a small price to pay for peace of mind. I’m not complaining.

I’ve been playing cards since the age of three and I still missed the question on playing cards. Dumb. But hey, I still came in with a score of 19. Go take the observation quiz and report back here. Anyone who scores a perfect 25 gets a personalized illustration created from a photo of their choice. You need only send me a screen shot of your score for verification and your word that you didn’t take the test a second time.
Good luck.

I’m a crazed fan of any book, video or television show that explains how an object is made, created or built. I’m talking motorcycles (American Choppper) to violins (How It’s Made) to houses and furniture (This Old House and New Yankee Workshop) to food (just about everything on the Food Network). The following video on ink-making is just about one of the finest I’ve ever come across. The music is perfect and the ink maker’s passion for his craft grabs hold of you from the first moment.
I won’t be looking at ink in the same way any time soon.
