If you’ve ever owned a non-digital SLR camera, then this story should have some meaning for you.
An unlikely pilgrimage is under way to Dwayne’s Photo [Parsons, Kansas], a small family business that has through luck and persistence become the last processor in the world of Kodachrome, the first successful color film and still the most beloved.
That celebrated 75-year run from mainstream to niche photography is scheduled to come to an end on Thursday when the last processing machine is shut down here to be sold for scrap.
I estimate I’ve shot well over a thousand rolls of Kodachrome, Ektachrome and Fujichrome in my lifetime before making the switch over to the digital world of photography. Do I miss it? A little but it’s hard to beat the convenience of digital photography and the joy in “processing” my own “film” in Photoshop.
What I do miss is the expectation one had in waiting for the film to be processed. You never quite knew what to expect and there was a fun, Christmas morning feel to opening up the processed film package and viewing one’s prints or slides for the first time. I liked that part.
Kodachrome
You give us those nice bright colors
You give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world’s a sunny day, oh yeah!
I got a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So Mama, don’t take my Kodachrome away
I’m going to be in and out over the next week, blogging when I can. Mostly I’ll be spending time back home with family and friends as well as working on a couple of projects I’ve been neglecting. Catching up on some non-political reading is also part of the plan…as is eating a ton of roasted chestnuts, a Christmas favorite…and building a whole bunch of snowmen. That’s me and my grandson below with out first snowman of the season.
I wish you all a Happy Holiday season. May it be safe and joyous. Take good care of yourselves.
What those little kiddies did not see behind that smile of mine was the excruciating pain I was in. I pulled something in my lower back while putting on my Santa boots. But hey, I popped a couple of painkillers, got into my sled and did my Santa thing. That’s how us Santas roll.
All in all, it was great fun. Methinks I was born to be a Santa.
