This woman has lasting power. How many of these were you around for?

You can’t make this stuff up.
A 65-year-old South Carolina woman has been charged with cruelty to animals after confessing to torturing and hanging a pit bull dog after the dog chewed on her Bible. Miriam Fowler Smith of Pacolet Mills, South Carolina, was arrested Sunday and taken to the Spartanburg County jail, facing felony charges.
Spartanburg County authorities report that Smith has been charged with felony animal cruelty, accused of hanging her nephew’s pit bull with an electrical cord and burning its body after the dog chewed on her Bible.
When questioned by police and animal control officers, Miriam Smith claimed the female dog named “Diamond” was a “devil dog” and she feared it might harm neighborhood children.
Otherwise another compassionate Christian I’m sure…

Only two days left to cast your vote and nominate your favorite blogs.
.
Nomination time has arrived for the 11th annual Weblog Awards. If you have not yet voted, you have until January 16 to cast your ballot for your favorite blogs. Finalists (based in part on the number of nominations) will then be selected for each category and final voting starts on February 1.
You may nominate the same blog (wink, wink, nod, nod) in multiple categories. If, for example, you were of a mind to nominate this blog for a Bloggie, you might consider submitting it under these categories: Politics, Best-Kept Secret and Most Humorus.
Remember, voting is your civic duty!

I found this post by DougJ over at Balloon Juice amusing.
There was a lot of chest-thumping, or weasel-whacking or monkey-strangling or what have you, about the awesomeness of the United States among the wingerati over the past few days. Rich Lowry declared that the United States is the best because we are the best, no one rocks as hard as we do, bitch.
Our greatness is simply a fact. Only the churlish or malevolent can deny it, or even get irked at its assertion.
Bill Kristol then gave Lowry some kind ironic boo-yah about the fact that Obama talked about how great the US is right after Lowry wrote his column.
The exchange was fairly typical of what passes for high-brow conservatism these days. And yet there are those who [wonder] why conservatism has such little appeal for intellectually-inclined voters.
I would think that the degree of greatness bestowed upon a people or nation has everything to do with who is doing the defining as well as how greatness is defined. Here is one way to look at it from a post I wrote a year and a half ago.
…a reminder of what makes the United States a great nation.
Strip aside all of the surface layers to get to the raw essence of a person’s being and it will always be the traits of empathy and compassion which best defines who they are.
The same can equally be said of nations.
