The Black President

The above image is Norman Rockwell’s “The Problem We All Live With” which graced the cover of Look magazine on January 14, 1964. It commemorates the story of Ruby Bridges who, at the age of 6, was the first African-American child to attend an all-white school in the South – an iconic moment in the history of a country which has struggled with racism for its entire existence.

As soon as Bridges got into the school, white parents went in and brought their own children out; all teachers refused to teach while a black child was enrolled. They hired Barbara Henry, from Boston, Massachusetts, to teach Bridges, and for over a year Mrs. Henry taught her alone, “as if she were teaching a whole class.” That first day, Bridges and her adult companions spent the entire day in the principal’s office; the chaos of the school prevented their moving to the classroom until the second day. Every morning, as Bridges walked to school, one woman would threaten to poison her; because of this, the U.S. Marshals dispatched by President Eisenhower, who were overseeing her safety, only allowed Ruby to eat food that she brought from home. Another woman at the school put a black baby doll in a wooden coffin and protested with it outside the school, a sight that Bridges Hall has said “scared me more than the nasty things people screamed at us.”

I write this because of a great post I read by Dennis G. over at Balloon Juice.  Ruby Bridges met with President Obama this July to view the Rockwell painting which currently hangs on a wall just outside the Oval Office.  The event moved Dennis to write the following:

There is something celebratory about Ruby Bridges standing next to our Nation’s first Black President and viewing a depiction of an ugly moment of her childhood that made her into a icon of courage for the ages.

And yet, there is a bit of sadness when one considers how far we still have to go to confront racism in America. For it is racism and the fear of losing white privilege that animates most of the Tea Party and—I would say—most of the irrational rage at all things Obama. Others will disagree (especially those suffering from Obama derangement syndrome), but nothing I have seen in the last three years has led me to question this view.

Racism is a fact of life for this President. It is just another thing to overcome. And something that can never be far from Barack Obama’s mind. Every time he walks to his desk he passes this image of courage in the face of hate and the word “Nigger” scrawled on the wall.

I’ll think about that the next time some dumb ass whines about how weak he is or how he doesn’t give a shit about progressive values.

I have no idea what a black President thinks of each and every day as he passes by a painting with the word nigger prominently displayed on it.  Nor can we know the thoughts of the many visitors who see the painting as they walk the corridor leading up to the Oval Office.  But whatever those thoughts might be, I suspect that Dennis G.’s comment can not be far off the mark.  I’m reminded of an email I received on the night of Obama’s victory in 2009 from a white Southerner expressing dismay and wondering what it must have been like for Joe Biden, a white man, to have to hug and congratulate a black man who was now his boss.  I could only shake my head at the racist remark and quietly hit the Delete key.

In the midst of an economic crisis and an opposition battling this president on every front, it’s easy for Americans to forget what it is Barack Obama has accomplished in becoming the first black President in US history.  He is the end result of Ruby Bridges’ walk on that day in November 1960.  And while his skin color does not give this President a free pass (there’s an understatement), it does help put his presidency into perspective and is a reminder of much of what lies beneath the hate and distrust of Barack Obama.

New Browser Plugin Reveals Email Sender’s Political Contributions

I just came across a Firefox plugin, Inbox Influence, which gives instant data on which political entities or individuals your email senders are contributing money to. If, for example, you receive daily news updates from the Washington Post, the following graphic would appear on the right side of the email.

A link would appear directing you to a more detailed account of the Washington Post’s donation recipients. The plugin also works on individuals. You might be surprised to discover that in the last year, Uncle Jim contributed $100 to the Tea Party Patriots. Hmmm…

All of this information is already out there for anyone wishing to take the time to research it.  The plugin simply does the work for you. Here’s the promotional video.

So what’s the point of this plugin? Well, if you don’t care about who is giving what to whom, then it’s pointless. But if you’re at all curious or if you do care about the political connections of, for example, your current cable company, then it’s a handy and interesting little tool. It might influence whom you decide to do business with.

Tea Party Patriots? Uncle Jim? Really? Who would have thought?

One Of Those Stinking Days…

Every once in a while you have one of those days in which you wish you never got out of bed…

I woke up at 6 AM to get ready to leave the house at 7.  My sons and I had a doctor’s appointment at 8 to get the results from the blood tests we had undergone a couple of weeks back. The doctor’s office is on the other side of town so getting there on time meant leaving promptly at 7.  So, of course, we left at 7:25, battled traffic the entire way and got there at 8:20. Not good…but as it turned out, it didn’t really matter what time we got to the doctor’s office. We were greeted by the receptionist who reported that the doctor was ill and our appointment had to be rescheduled. She had tried phoning us to inform us of the situation but she called the house after we had left and she didn’t have our cell numbers on file.  Damn.

We set the new appointment for Thursday morning and left. The boys and I decided we’d go out for breakfast and try out a new restaurant that was getting rave reviews. Jeffrey had to be at work by 10 (he brought a separate car), so we had about an hour to find the restaurant and enjoy breakfast. Joey pulled out his beloved iPhone and located the restaurant via his GPS app and off we went for what should have been a 10 minute drive.

The directions called for going south at the highway. We instead took the north exit (no, I don’t know why) and immediately found ourselves immersed in ugly traffic. To add to the drama, the Empty light was flashing on the dashboard. We called Jeffrey to inform him of the situation, took the first exit and somehow got back on course.  As we approached a gas station up the road, I made the brilliant decision that we could easily make it to the restaurant with what was left in the gas tank, eat in peace, let Jeffrey leave and then fill up on our way home.

Three minutes away from the restaurant, the car sputtered and stopped. I believe it was at that moment that a curse word or two was heard. Sigh.

We got out of our cars and looked around…not a gas station in sight. We spotted a crew cutting grass and were sure they’d have some gas containers in their trucks. Gas they had but it was premixed with oil so that plan fizzled. So Jeff drove off to find us gas. Fifteen minutes later he returned with $5 worth of the precious fuel in a brand new container. I’m sure I have about 6 or 7 once-used gas containers back home. Make that 7 or 8 now.

It was now 9:20. We had about 30 minutes before Jeff had to leave for work so we hurried off to the restaurant, ordered and quickly ate. When we asked for the bill, the waitress noted that we were fast eaters. We smiled, paid the bill and left.

That should have been the end of the story, but it wasn’t. I got back home, pulled out the laptop to get down to work and…nothing. The computer was dead. It turned out that the power source was not working and my laptop battery was drained. Two minutes into messing around with the power cord, I could smell something in the power source box burning. Lovely. The bloody thing was only six months old.

So there you go, my day so far. I’m writing this on a borrowed laptop until I build up enough energy to hop down to BestBuy to purchase a new power supply unit. Another $80 down the drain.

Hope you’re all having a better one. I’m going to do my best to keep a smile on my face and salvage what I can from this one.  If you’ve had days similar to mine, feel free to share. Happy Tuesday.
