There was a time when I felt that Tim Pawlenty was one of the more palatable Republican leaders out there. I was wrong. As a Newsweek interview reveals, Pawlenty is just another anti-science, anti-gay, religious conservative.
Here are some snippets from the Newsweek piece.
Do you think Palin is qualified to be president?
She is easily as qualified as Barack Obama. I would argue she’s more qualified in terms of leadership, experience, management, and supervision—actually running something. She was a mayor, head of an energy commission, and governor.
He forgot to mention that she is also the least intellectual and most uninformed political leader since the last least intellectual and most uninformed political leaders ever, George W. Bush.
In her book, Palin claims that McCain’s handlers wanted her to be silent about her belief in creationism. How would you describe your view?
I can tell you how we handle it in Minnesota. We leave it to the local school districts. We don’t mandate a curriculum or an approach. We allow for something called “intelligent design” to be discussed as a comparative theory. It doesn’t have to be in science class.
In typical conservative fashion, Pawlenty is in favor of dumbing down America’s children. Anyone who peddles Intelligent Design as anything more than simple Creationism dressed in pseudo-science garb is either a charlatan or a fool. If one believes in Creationism, fine but don’t try to sell it off as science or as a “comparative theory” to evolution. Call it what it is; religious belief based on faith, not science.
I know you are opposed to gay marriage, but what about medical benefits for same-sex couples?
I have not supported that. Why not?
My general view on all of this is that marriage is to be defined as being a union of a man and a woman. Marriage should be elevated in our society at a special level. I don’t think all domestic relationships are the equivalent of traditional marriage. Early on we decided as a country and as a state that there was value in a man and a woman being married in terms of impact on children and the like, and we want to encourage that.
Conservative code for “I don’t understand why anyone chooses to be gay and I don’t particularly like them anyway.”
Anyway, as I said…just another anti-science, anti-gay, fundamentalist Christian conservative. Boring.

Pawlenty has to adhere to the Conservative Purity Code if he wants support from his usual campaign contributors. Not only that, but if he goes against them, he will have organizations like Freedom Works, Americans For Prosperity, and Club For Growth actively working against him.
It could be said that groups like MoveOn.org, the AFL-CIO, and FireDogLake are working against Pres. Obama. So, I guess this is just the nature of today’s political scene.
