I understand that politics is what it is and Republicans are playing the opposition game but how funny to hear them now claim they have the answers as to how to get the economy moving. This is from a party which held the levers of power for 8 years, six of which they had complete control of both the White House and Congress.
What they fail to understand, I think, is that people voted for change. If they wanted the same fiscal policies which drove the economy into the ground, they would have voted for John McCain. As for President Obama, he is obviously doing his best to get a bipartisan bill but at the end of the day, it’s going to be a Democrat bill. Republicans are not about to roll over for Obama no matter how much their partisanship further hurts the country.
$4.19 billion for “neighborhood stabilization activities” (ACORN)
$1 billion for Amtrak
$2 billion for child-care subsidies
$50 million for the National Endowment of the Arts
$400 million for global warming research
$2.4 billion for clean coal
$650 million for even more digital TV conversion coupons
$600 million for new government cars
$7 billion for modernizing federal buildings; $150 million for the Smithsonian
$54 billion for Economic Development Office and Small Business Administration programs that the OMB or GAO have already analyzed to be “ineffective.”
Considering the financial difficulties we are having and the amount of debt we are being saddled with, you would think it would be nice to simply spend the money where it is needed rather than fund these earmark projects.
Someone needs to come up with a clean funding package and President Obama and the Democrats seem to be incapable of doing that.
All this while wondering why the Government is even considering subsidizing the changeover in TV’s? We have known this was going to happen for at least 5 years or more. The conversion box costs (if memory serves)$29.99 from Radio Shack. If you don’t have enough responsibility to save $30 over a period of 5 years you deserve to be unable to view your TV. And why should the Government spend MY tax dollars to help people watch TV??
Yes Sir!!! You better believe Liberalism is a Mental Disorder!!
Let’s see now…the same bumbling politicians who drove the economy into the ground, the same guys whose fiscal policies brought the US into the the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, these same clowns have suddenly become experts on the economy?
The stimulus bill will still undergo change before it finally passes so there’s no point taking it apart piece by piece. Besides, your understanding of the measures included in it are probably no keener than mine but you are free to blindly parrot conservative misinformation if you wish. I will deal with the ‘ACORN’ item you mention though.
The provision you cite makes no mention of ACORN. What it does say is that $4.19 billion will be appropriated “for neighborhood stabilization activities related to emergency assistance for the redevelopment of abandoned and foreclosed homes as authorized under division B, title III of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008.”
It further states “not less than $3,440,000,000 shall be allocated by a competition” to “States, units of general local government, and nonprofit entities or consortia of nonprofit entities.” It also provides that “up to $750,000,000 shall be awarded by competition to nonprofit entities or consortia of nonprofit entities to provide community stabilization assistance.”
If you wish to read it for yourself, you can do so here.
There you go. So you heard some conservative hack say that $4.19 billion was going to “neighborhood stabilization activities” and were told that that meant it was going to ACORN and you came on here and repeated it and thought you were being smart.
Okay? I can go on and on, but why? I listed over 11 earmarks. Is the ACORN one the only one that concerns you?
YOU are the one that got your little bitty liberal feelings hurt because I pointed out that ACORN was one of the organizations included as a recipient of these funds.
What you miss (no surprise there) is that in these desperate times, instead of passing a clean bill with funding to assist our failing economy, they have passed a billed fattened with a wish list of funding for pet projects that they have been wanting for years. So, in the best interest of our Nation, (wink, wink) they have attached all this unnecessary funding to what is considered to be an “Emergency” Measure intended to “save” our floundering economy.
But you, the wild eyed little liberal that you are, ignore the big picture and focus on trying to further your agenda that everyone that disagrees with you and refuses to fall lock step in line, is just blindly parroting some talk show host, and has no ability to inform themselves of issues. Must be lonely on that little Intellectual Elite Pedestal.
For my part, I think the bail outs and all this rampant, irresponsible spending is wrong. I believe in Personal Responsibility. I think you should have to buy your own danged conversion box or just not watch T.V.!!!
But, I don’t necessarily expect you to understand that. That’s the functional difference between us Do’ers and you Do’ees.
$345 million for Agriculture Department Computers. $650 million for TV Converter Boxes. $15 Billion for College Scholarships. $1 Billion to deal with Census Problems. $88 million to move Public Health Service. $2.1 Billion to pay shortfall in Public Housing Accounts. $870 million to combat flu. $400 million to slow spread of STD’s. $40 million to change way Health Statistics are collected. $380 million for rainy day fund for W.I.C. (Women, Infants and Children)
Okay Stuart Smal……I mean, Mario, or any of you other Kool Aide addicted individuals. How does this either stimulate the economy OR create jobs???
And you want to discredit opposition with ACORN argument. Which by the way, you can verify that ACORN benefits greatly from this package from a couple of hundred other sources than me OR FOXX News.
