The GOP and the Return of the Dark Ages

Glenn Beck and Goldline must be dancing with joy.

The Utah House of Representatives has approved a bill that allowing gold and silver coins to be used as currency, though unlike similar bills in other states, it doesn’t force anyone to accept gold or silver as legal tender.

As TPM reports, there are ten other states with proposals for similar legislation. Teabaggers have opened up the Pandora’s box of craziness and it’s going to take one hell of an effort to get these insane legislators contained.

In Florida, old school Republicans are at serious odds with their new billionaire governor, Rick Scott. The teabagger governor who turned down $2.4 billion in stimulus money for a high-speed rail has his fellow Republicans concerned over his go-it-alone approach to governing. Keep your eyes on Florida over the next few years to see what happens when you elect a crackpot who believes that CEO-style governance over three branches/democratic government is the way to go. It’s not going to be pretty.

And, of course, you have the union-busting intent of Tea Party backed governors in Wisconsin, Ohio and Indiana. What to do? Well, a TPM commenter might have the right idea although the insanity is not confined to the South.

Why don’t we just let the entire south secede, build a moat around it, add some “gators” so they can’t get back out…and help all who want to escape, do so…and forget about it?

Life would be so nice for the rest of us……And for them too, in their world of chastity belts, pregnant teens, gold and silver tender, no benefits, slave wages, long hours with the “little woman at home cooking dinner”. They wouldn’t be forced to accept health care nor federal money and can fly their own flag!

I’m tired of trying to make a house pet out of a wolverine. It’s just not working out for me.

Secession of course is a ridiculous concept but the writer’s frustration is typical of other reaction I’m hearing from acquaintances around the country. There is a growing concern that a never before seen age of ignorance and intolerance has descended upon America and you can almost start to believe that the U.S. is about to descend into round two of the Dark Ages with the GOP leading the charge.

In fairness Article 1 Section 10 does say that No state shall..make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts

  3. Richard Esler says:

Two reasons why the South seceding would cause problems:

    1. Can you imagine the huge foreign aid bill?

    2. You think we have an illegal immigrant problem now …..

Otherwise, they would not be missed.

  5. Unreconstructed says:

Wow – finally you get it – all we want is to be left alone. Your kind praise the overthrow of governments in the Middle East, but, when there is even the mere talk of it here in the good old Empire, your kind reject it immediately as “hate speech”. As an original man from Dixie, seceding is starting to sound more and more a good idea. The newly elected Republicans are a joke – they only prolong the misery of tax and spend (all the while under the veil of conservatism). Unfortunately, it is time for a real change – so if you and your liberal elites will just let us be, we will happily go in peace.

  6. Jan says:

By all means, go in peace……..BUT I doubt that ‘your kind’ is capable of doing anything in peace!
