It’s politicians like Rep. Joe Barton who remind you of exactly what Republicans stand for. Here’s what this guy had to say to BP’s CEO concerning the $20 billion escrow account that BP was forced to set up to pay up claims.
“I’m ashamed of what happened in the White House yesterday. I think it is a tragedy in the first proportion that a private corporation can be subjected to what I would characterize as a shakedown — in this case a $20 billion shakedown — with the attorney general of the United States, who is legitimately conducting a criminal investigation and has every right to do so to protect the American people, participating in what amounts to a $20 billion slush fund that’s unprecedented in our nation’s history, which has no legal standing, which I think sets a terrible precedent for our nation’s future.”
“I’m only speaking for myself. I’m not speaking for anyone else, but I apologize. I do not want to live in a county where anytime a citizen or a corporation does something that is legitimately wrong, [it is] subject to some sort of political pressure that, again, in my words, amounts to a shakedown.”
Other Republicans followed suit.
Tom Price (R-GA)
“These actions are emblematic of a politicization of our economy that has been borne out of this Administration’s drive for greater power and control.”
Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.):
[The president appears to be using BP as a] “permanent ATM card,”
And in perfect harmony, right-wing media has been referring to the BP escrow account as a “slush fund”. It’s as if these scumbags are unaware that not only did it take Exxon more than twenty years to pay up all claims over the Exxon Valdez spill but that the process was a battle the entire way.
Here’s hoping that Dems make this matter front and center come election time. No one should be allowed to forget that when it comes to their best interests, the Republican party is the enemy.
The sick apology:

This whole ‘thing’ with the Republicans defending BP is sickening!
No,No,No, is this dude for real? please tell me I’m dreaming.
Barton should be kicked out of office, locked in a room and
forced to listen to Yoko Ono mus-ake wail bathing in a tub full
of 5-30 wt. used motor oil.
what a tool. but you all know what, he has given the Dem’s a load of material for the mid term elections. if they don’t use it then they’re dumb asses. between Barton, Angle, & the rest of the wing nuts….they truely are the gift that keeps on giving.
