Is being an asshole a prerequisite for being a Republican these days?

…tens of thousands of illegal Haitian immigrants can remain temporarily in the U.S. while their country rebuilds after Tuesday’s devastating earthquake.

The announcement to grant “temporary protective status,” or TPS, to Haitian nationals allows immigrants already in the U.S. to live and work freely here until conditions in Haiti improve. After 18 months the status could be revoked.

So who with a shred of decency would object?

While several liberal groups and members of Congress had urged the administration to declare TPS for Haitians, conservative immigration groups, as well as a Republican congressman, had said such a move would amount to a slippery slope to “amnesty.”

“This sounds to me like open borders advocates exercising the Rahm Emanuel axiom: ‘Never let a crisis go to waste,’” Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, said in an e-mail message to ABCNews. “Illegal immigrants from Haiti have no reason to fear deportation, but if they are deported, Haiti is in great need of relief workers, and many of them could be a big help to their fellow Haitians.”

Actually, “never let a crisis go to waste” should be the Republican motto these days. They have been relentless in politicizing every single issue which has made the news. And if there is no crisis, they invent one. Republicans have shifted so far to the right they now exist in a world where paranoia is the norm and where demons and bogeymen inhabit every nook and cranny of their demented minds.

Pathetic does not begin to describe what the GOP has become.

They are pathetic and running around in fear land…. I’d like for them to knock it off but I then I think they should keep it up, because it’s better for the Dems

Janine, that is the way that I like to think of it also, but since Obama has taken office, I can see that I had an overly optimistic views of how far we have come in this country, away from racism. There are some very deep pockets of it, and it is boiling to the surface. I am becoming increasingly alarmed at what I see. Who would have thought that people would show up at anti-government rallies wearing guns? It is because they wanted to make a statement about having a black president. The anarchists have found a temporary home in the Republican party. I hope that this alliance brings down the Republican party in the next elections, 2012 and 2014.

If it had been St Thomas instead of Haiti, I wonder what the attitude of Republican mouthpieces like Fox,who dedicates a whole 7 minutes to the crisis the other night, would have to say.

I understand what you are saying and it is alarming the anarchists etc., have found a home in the Republican party. Their websites are full of hate and calls to ‘war.” It is very alarming!

You make a very good point about the deep pockets funding the conservative right…. I too hope it brings that party down in the next elections. fingers crossed!

Fox dedicated a whole 7 minutes to the Haiti crises. Wow, now that’s fair and balanced

I agree that the current crop fo Republicans are delusional, but when will he people turn on them? It would be nice if the current GOP were smacked down so hard that they wouldn’t even want to get up, but the people keep encouraging them with their votes and the press keeps babying them. When is this stupid country going to stop giving radicals on either side of the fence rock star treatment?
