As if anyone needed further proof that the far-right suffers from a severe case of delusional disorder, this comes out of Texas.
The Texas Board of Education has been meeting this week to revise its social studies curriculum. During the past three days, “the board’s far-right faction wielded their power to shape lessons on the civil rights movement, the U.S. free enterprise system and hundreds of other topics”:
– To avoid exposing students to “transvestites, transsexuals and who knows what else,” the Board struck the curriculum’s reference to “sex and gender as social constructs.”
– The Board removed Thomas Jefferson from the Texas curriculum, “replacing him with religious right icon John Calvin.”
– The Board refused to require that “students learn that the Constitution prevents the U.S. government from promoting one religion over all others.”
One board member left the meeting in disgust with this…
“They can just pretend this is a white America and Hispanics don’t exist.”
These people will not stop until every child in America believes that the earth is 6000 years old and every American is forced to carry a gun and a Bible. As one reader so eloquently put it, “Intellect just had its Alamo.”

A lie is believed in the absence of facts, or if it resonates with something already believed to be true. Children believe what they’re told because they haven’t learned any conflicting information. Besides life experience, the main source of facts from which people can make sound decisions, comes from our public school system.
It is my belief, that in the last 40 years, our government run public school system has “dumbed down” the population. I believe that it’s been done to more easily manipulate the voters into going along with an agenda of establishing greater government control over the everyday lives of the citizens.
Two examples:
1) If children are not taught American civics, they will not know when government oversteps it’s authority per the U.S. Constitution.
2) If children are not taught economics, they will lack an understanding of how wealth is generated in a free market system. Hence, they will believe a politician when told they are “entitled” to something for free.
The irony in that plan is that when you’ve left a blank slate, anything can be written on it. That’s why we’re seeing the creationist movement making such headway. As always, be careful of what you wish for.
Fair points Tommy…my hope remains in the belief that Americans will generally catch up to people when they overreach. The Texas scenario is an example of such an overreach, and what is needed is a rational and reasonable formulation of curriculum standards that average Americans can live with. When those folks took Thomas Jefferson out of the picture (because they realized that he was not a Christian in their definition), they crossed a boundary. I hope the last point of the post is realized; after the Alamo, the Texans won their freedom. This can and should be used as a rallying point for broad reaching and fundamentally sound education K-12.
