Spiritual Warfare in American Politics

As if you needed more reason to be wary of the right-wing’s obsession with religion and in particular presidential aspirants like Rick Perry.

An emerging Christian movement that seeks to take dominion over politics, business and culture in preparation for the end times and the return of Jesus, is becoming more of a presence in American politics. The leaders are considered apostles and prophets, gifted by God for this role.

The international “apostolic and prophetic” movement has been dubbed by its leading American architect, C. Peter Wagner, as the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR). Although the movement is larger than the network organized by Wagner — and not all members describe themselves as part of Wagner’s NAR — the so-called apostles and prophets of the movement have identifiable ideology that separates them from other evangelicals.

Two ministries in the movement planned and orchestrated Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s recent prayer rally, where apostles and prophets from around the nation spoke or appeared onstage.

[...]

Thomas Muthee, the Kenyan pastor who anointed Sarah Palin at the Wasilla Assembly of God Church in 2005, while praying for Jesus to protect her from the spirit of witchcraft, is also part of this movement.

[...]

Tabachnick says the movement currently works with a variety of politicians and has a presence in all 50 states. It also has very strong opinions about the direction it wants the country to take. For the past several years, she says, the NAR has run a campaign to reclaim what it calls the “seven mountains of culture” from demonic influence. The “mountains” are arts and entertainment; business; family; government; media; religion; and education.

Do read the full article. It’s downright frightening.

Rachel Tabachnick is an expert on the religious right’s influence on politics.  Here is how she describes the NAR.

“[Their issues are] anti-abortion, anti-gay rights — but they also have … the belief that government should not be involved in social safety nets, that the country is becoming socialist, if not communist … — all of what we’ve come to call ‘Tea Party issues’ of very small government. In the case of the apostles, they believe this because they believe that a large government that handles the safety net is taking away what is the domain of the church and of Christianity.”

Sounds to me like Tabachnick has just described a major part of the GOP platform.  If Republicans take power next year, look for an assault on those “seven mountains of culture” unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.  These people are determined to take Americans as far back into the Dark Ages as they possibly can.

If you want an “old school” religious view of this NAR type thinking…go read a book by the former Sec. of Agriculture under Pres. Eisenhower, Ezra Taft Benson, formerly the “prophet and President” of the Mormon Church called An Enemy Hath Done This. It calls for the “elders of Israel” (read the Mormon leadership) to “rescue the Constitution” as it will be, in their view, “hanging as if by a thread”. It makes for very interesting reading and shows that this type of thinking has been around a very long time and is now just simply using the greater tools of technology to get out their message. Have fun with this!

  3. Peter says:

GOD comes from the word GOOD. it is the positive energy in our beings that radiate worldwide, earthwide…

What we do with this godliness is what really matters, not what some human’s decided was the WAY to be GODLY.

In this process of humanizing spirituality and goodness they have humanized this positive energy which is not possible.

Why? Power, revenues, elections, etc. Do any of these things have anything to do with spiritual GOODNESS AND GODLINESS ? I don’t think so.

  4. cathy says:

Melody, it might have been around for a while but we’re at a place now where the leading Republican for next year’s general election held a prayer rally organized by these fanatics. They have infiltrated the highest ranks of the republican party and that is reason enough for all of us to be concerned.

  5. Melody Brynne DeGagne says:

Cathy, you just made my point for me. Benson made it all the way to Sec. of Agriculture! Do you know how many of our FBI, CIA, etc. are Mormon? They recruit heavily from BYU! Mormons are making it a point to get as high up in government as they can go. If you thought my last point meant I was complacent, think again! I am very concerned when a 12 million member, 10 billion dollars a year organization sets it’s sites on taking over a government! We all need to do our homework when preparing to vote for people seeking public office and find out what their REAL agenda is!

I just checked NPR.org, and Terry did in fact talk to Rachel Tabachnick today…
You can grab the podcast if you’re interested…

We all gotta work hard next year and get O back in office and remove as many R’s as we can from both sides of the aisle…

If this Perry/Bachman duo happens to get elected somehow…and we lose a couple of Senators…
We are done….it’s over…It might take 50 years before this country could recover…

From my interpretation of the New Testament,Jesus Christ for all practical purposes was a Liberal that was murdered by the Right Wing of the Jewish Temple. Right after he cost them money by over turning the money changers tables…for turning the house of God into a den of thieves.

I dont see it as much different today…greed and the FOX Network are destroying America and they dont care. Waving around a Bible and hiding behind an American flag…Satan hides in plain sight. It may already be too late to correct this Tea Party Dictatorship and yes…they are bringing about Armageddon. Like dogs going back to their own vomit…these Retardlicans want to finish the job Bush started.

  9. john liming says:

I understand that The National Apostolic Reformation (NAR) actually teaches children to accept the idea of becoming “Martyrs” (Literal Martyrs–dead martyrs..like the infamous suicide bombers of Radical Islam) in what they describe as a Spiritual War to reclaim the World (Or at least the United States) for Jesus Christ. When I hear that and then look at the so-called “Tea Party” and their often “Revolutionist” and “Insurrectionist” rhetoric (And they wear guns to their political rallies), I see something dark and sinister rising on the American Political Horizon–something that ordinary citizens will probably dismiss as alarmist and not entirely true. (But something insidiously dangerous and inherently evil regardless.) Everyone needs to raise the alarm on this one before we are all caught asleep at the helm and find ourselves hurled over the precipice.

I’m glad this movement is beginning to get more publicity; I’ve been reading about it for three years now, primarily on a website called “God’s Own Party” (sorry, I couldn’t get it to link) run by a woman named Leah L.Burton. She has a book coming out on September 4th, entitled “God, Guns & Greed; A Dangerous Path for America.” It should be an interesting read, and I look forward to learning more about Rachel Tabachnick.

The politicians who lived and/or met at the “C” Street house in Washington run by a religious group, which received a lot of publicity because of Mark Sanford and John Ensign over a year ago, are possibly a part of this movement. These people all seem to agree that the end justifies the means and are not required to abide by any moral code

Steve is correct; it is very scary and a takeover of our government by them would be end of life as we know it.

Perry and Bachman say that “GOD” told them to run for POTUS.When they lose would that mean that their “GOD”is a weak “GOD”?or a false “GOD”Didn’t Pat Robinson run under the “GOD” banner, and when he lost who did he blame?

  13. ocLiberal says:

I long for “the good old days” when people who heard voices from God were safe in MENTAL Institutions NOT POLITICAL Institutions.

That is the single most fucking manipulative, arrogant, presumptuous thing a candidate can do in my mind. Tell me what you think about the issues important to me, but if you tell me that God told you ANYTHING about those issues you just lost my support, even if I would otherwise have agreed with you.

Politicians like Bush, Bachman and Perry use God as a punchline. For that they insult every Christian. They are carnival acts posing as good people and anybody who doesn’t recognize it is sad and pathetic.

They are the lowest form of life.

  14. steve says:

    WOW…way to GO…!!! ocLiberal…
Could NOT have said any better than that…
    Right on, dude…!!!!

  15. dinamic says:

Tommy this time I agree with you.

  16. Janet says:

Yep! You got it ocliberal. Who doesn’t know by now, that I’m Christian, although anymore it’s more like a dirty word! I have tried to engage in talks with tea party supporters, and their ignorance is astounding. The walls come up. Not one word will they speak to me on politics. It’s like they have become some kind of secret society in their surroundings.

  17. Melchiezedec says:

This is for anyone that cares to take on some of these Teabagging Retardlicans and pseudo Christians head on. There is a blog site called “Sodahead” and it is primarily dominated by these hatefilled, racist ,brainwashed by FOX,propagandists. You are allowed to post images which these (dare I say)people do in great numbers on the “Political” section and are also allowed to create their own “topics”. (So can you) Usually nasty topics and more often than not, race based and as far as I can tell,Satanic in nature and at heart. Just for the evil they spew although they claim to be Christian. I myself love beating them over and over again with snappy retorts and insults …and a lot of just plain common sense.
I use a lot of Mario’s images to stress a point but be careful, even some of Marios images contain what they consider profanity (like the word “a$$hole”) and these destroyers of free speech will complain and the image will get removed so do some editing when necessary. If you verbally attack someone using profanity you can be suspended for a few days…I lost it once or twice myself but,Im back and learning their game. They will try to get you “deactivated” but so far they havent nailed me yet. So…if you need to blow off some steam or just want to get to know the hysteria and paranoia of the right wing hypocrites…check it out just for the laughs or,join me in messing with their heads.

  18. harry says:

If religion ever thinks of driving us back to the dark ages, they’ll find it hard to pray to god without all the churches i burnt down :P

  19. E.A. Blair says:

“GOD comes from the word GOOD. it is the positive energy in our beings that radiate worldwide, earthwide…”

No. “God” comes from a word which meant “invoked” as in “one who is called on”. “Good” comes from a word that meant “brought together” or “of one kind”. They are not related – any similarity is purely coincidental.
