Popes, Pedophiles and Saints-to-be

Popes and Pedophiles - the Vatican Shuffle : http://mariopiperni.com/

When an enabler of sexual abuse directed at children sits on the threshold of sainthood, you know you’re living in a world of screwed-up priorities.

The canonisation of Wojtyla is getting closer quickly and it could be celebrated next October. In fact, in the past few days, the medical council of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints has recognized as inexplicable one healing attributed to the blessed John Paul II. A supposed “miracle” that, if it is also approved by theologians and the cardinals (as it is very likely), will bring the Polish Pope, who died in 2005, the halo of sainthood in record time, just eight years after his death.

Here’s what I remember about John Paul II’s 26-year-pontificate.

..on the greatest internal crisis facing the church, the pope failed, time and again, to take decisive action in response to clear evidence of a criminal underground in the priesthood, a subculture that sexually traumatized tens of thousands of youngsters. Despite a 1984 warning memo from the Rev. Thomas Doyle, then a canon lawyer in the Vatican Embassy in Washington, and a ninety-three-page report on the problem co-written by Doyle in 1985, which was sent to every American bishop, John Paul ordered no outreach to victims, no binding policy to rid the priesthood of deviants. In 1989 the US conference of bishops sent experts in canon law to Rome, seeking a streamlined process for defrocking child molesters rather than waiting for the byzantine Vatican bureaucracy and final word from the pope. John Paul refused. Litigation and prosecutions spread, but the pope remained passive.

Children were being raped and the one man who could have done something real to punish the perpetrators and bring about justice…did nothing. By his inaction, John Paul made the conscious decision to allow his clergy to continue the rape of innocent children.

And the consequence of this criminal inaction? Was it the vilification this pope (as others before and after him) so deserves? No. Try beatification and canonization instead. What a shameful travesty. Whatever good John Paul did during his 26-year reign (and there was some), his unwillingness to act on a matter that negatively impacted the lives of tens of thousands young boys, is all that really counts.

Political writer and historian, Michael Parenti (who, as far as I can tell, coined the term Vatican shuffle) puts it all in perspective in this 2010 piece.

…the [Catholic] hierarchy, aging men who have no life experience with children and show not the slightest regard or empathy for them. They claim it their duty to protect the “unborn child” but offer no protection to the children in their schools and parishes.

They themselves are called “Father” but they father no one. They do not reside in households or families. They live in an old-boys network, jockeying for power and position, dedicated to the Holy Mother Church that feeds, houses, and adorns them throughout their lives.

From their heady heights, popes and bishops cannot hear the cries of children. In any case, the church belongs not to little children but to the bedecked oligarchs.

The damage done to sexual victims continues to go unnoticed: the ensuing years of depression, drug addiction, alcoholism, panic attacks, sexual dysfunction, and even mental breakdown and suicide–all these terrible aftereffects of child rape seem to leave popes and bishops more or less unruffled.

Yet they build a 45-foot statue to honor one of the many pedophile-enablers who we ‘eagerly’ await to call Saint later this year. That’s pretty messed up.

  1. Religion generally, and the Catholic Church specifically, is becoming increasingly irrelevant.

  2. They need to enjoy it while they can. My guess is the Vatican will not exist, other than as a museum, in about 50 years. Once you shine the light of information on religion, it withers. The internet helped expose this in a way unheard of 50 years ago.

  3. If the Catholic Church was to follow Jesus’ teachings, they really forgot about Jesus’s life’s work which was to bring the children to him for they were the future of his Church. To have denied justice to these children is unforgiveable and justice will be served when Vatican buildings start tumbling down and Catholicism restarts from Peter’s cornerstone. Pope Francis seems to be a prime example of where the Church should go in the future and it is not to build monstrosities of human extravagance but create humble souls in the image and love of God.

Catholicism cannot continue as it is today and if it comes back to Jesus’ teachings,it will rise from the ashes with the basic tenet of loving one another and peace on earth

  4. When I saw the words “Vatican Shuffle” I couldn’t help but think of Tom Lehrer’s Vatican Rag:

First you get down on your knees,
    Fiddle with your rosaries,
Bow your head with great respect,
    And genuflect, genuflect, genuflect!

Do whatever steps you want, if
You have cleared them with the pontiff.
    Everybody say his own
    Kyrie eleison,
    Doin’ the vatican rag.

Get in line in that processional,
    Step into that small confessional,
There, the guy who’s got religion’ll
Tell you if your sin’s original.
If it is, try playin’ it safer,
Drink the wine and chew the wafer,
    Two, four, six, eight,
    Time to transubstantiate!

So get down upon your knees,
    Fiddle with your rosaries,
Bow your head with great respect,
    And genuflect, genuflect, genuflect!

Make a cross on your abdomen,
When in Rome do like a Roman,
    Ave maria,
Gee it’s good to see ya,
    Gettin’ ecstatic an’
    Sorta dramatic an’
    Doin’ the vatican rag!

Of course, when Lehrer wrote that song, the child rape scandals were not yet known to the general public – only to perps, victims and (perhaps) victims’ families. I wonder what a Tom Lehrer song about the Catholics would be like if written or re-written today.

  5. What possessed you (the Vatican) to place John Paul’s name up for sainthood, a man that consciously decided to look the other way and allowed his clergy to rape innocent children, it shows the evil heart of the Catholic Church, for this reason I am no longer a Catholic. God knows your heart and the Catholic Church will be held accountable (Matthew 18:6 and Mark 9:42).

  6. “When an enabler of sexual abuse directed at children sits on the threshold of sainthood, you know you’re living in a world of screwed-up priorities.”

It is not our world that has screwed-up priorities. While the fundamental religious nut-cases (of whatever stripe) are significant in numbers, they are not the majority. They are just louder than those of us with common sense and decency and make good copy for media to rake in the cash.

I will never doubt that there is more good than evil in this world. But I will say that it looks like we’re losing to the nutcases because they have the backing of those who encourage chaos (wealthy) because it keeps their base afraid and causes those on the side of good to feel helpless. We aren’t unless we choose to be.

  7. Think of ‘Sainthood’ as nothing more than a flawed lifer being inducted into the Catholic Hall of Fame.

  8. They are just louder than those of us with common sense and decency and make good copy for media to rake in the cash.

There’s more to it than that. The church and organized religion established their hold on people long before the rise of modern media. They convince people that the world is a miserable place, a “vale of tears”, a vile sink of sin and corruption, that the people themselves are contemptible sinners (this despite, in Christianity, that humanity was “redeemed”*) and that the religious establishment is the only way to avoid an eternity of torment after a lifetime of suffering. Once you’ve firmly instilled these notions, you tell them that the only way to shed the material encumbrances of the sinful, evil world is to turn those encumbrances, your wealth, property and body, over to that very same religious establishment.

By the time modern media emerges, you’ve already established yourself as being in control. You don’t really have to be louder than the rational segment of humanity ’cause you’ve been whispering in peoples’ ears for centuries. You’ve established your version of morality as a cultural norm.

  9. Are those tap shoes in that photo? Shuffle indeed.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a hell for that a$$hole to burn in.
