“The extent to which he can recover seems to me depends on his faith. He is said to be a Buddhist. I don’t think that faith offers the kind of forgiveness and redemption that is offered by the Christian faith. My message to Tiger is, ‘Tiger, turn to the Christian faith and you can make a total recovery and be a great example to the world.”
Hume does make a valid point. What better religion than Christianity to turn to for support when troubled by infidelity. After all, this is the religion of John Ensign, Mark Sanford, John Edwards, Bill Clinton, Newt Gingrich, Rudy Giuliani, David Vitter…to say nothing of the thousands of priests who have been involved in sex scandals over the years.
Hume is just continuing what he’s done best over the years – spreading ignorance and intolerance.

And therein lay some of the problems. Instead of living your best spiritual life, you can go ahead commit a multitude of sins, ask for forgiveness from the head of your church and all is forgiven and you are magically considered a ‘good Christian’ again..
Sin and forgiveness are one thing and perhaps personal between the people involved — I just don’t understand that built in fail safe program in some organized religions….
Mario, I tend to agree with Janine – easy forgiveness makes recidivism too easy. I’m not a believer, but I know many find comfort and strength in their religion, so I am extremely tolerant – but, along with Janine – I can’t buy the “get out of Hell” cards handed out by organized Christian religions. I think of spirituality/religion more as a personal moral conscience or compass – we pretty much all know right from wrong, in the traditional sense. If your philandering causes harm to your family – then it is wrong – Tiger must atone to his wife/kids, not to any God, church, religion, fans or sponsors. I think the marriage is over (at least would be if it was me), but he can “redeem himself” as a father.
Still and all – understand your well made point about the sheer idiocy of Fox’s statement. Trading one religion for another – easy as changing your socks – and move to one with easy redemption. What great advice.
In the immortal words of Bugs Bunny – “What a Maroon – What an ultra-Maroon”. :)
Organized religion is man-made and frought with imperfections as mentionned by Mario. What a bowl of crap! Thou shall not covet thy neighbors wife is a commandment and is very explicit. There are no caveats attached or hidden meanings attributed some 5000 years ago. It is what it says.
In sickness and in health doesn’t imply infidelity and if you value religion for what it is or even if your moral compass is in full operation, swaying does not make your marriage more sexy but it does speak highly of your debauched and perverted character
Forgiveness is not dependent on the offender but on the offended. Hume implies that it is the public that needs to forgive Woods; that the public was wronged or harmed somehow, and that the only road to redemption is that which is acceptable by Hume’s public (which is predominantly fundamentalist Christian and believes that all non-Christians are going to Hell).
Now, if someone could come up with a religion that would keep people from fucking up, that promotes a true spiritual transformation to elevate us to above our baser human compunctions, we might have something. Somehow (and contrary to popular opinion, it is not a new concept) it is easier for people to beg for forgiveness than to not do the thing they need forgiveness for in the first place. It should be noted that forgiveness is rarely sought before the offense is discovered.
I knew Hume was a pompous, double talking moron when it came to matters political. I did not realize that he was also an ignoramus when it came to religion. I have seen many an bible thumping evangelists pulling for people of other faiths to go to hell. Hume takes the top prize among such fools. Is he planning to take over Jim Bakker’s ministry or what is left of it?

Brit Hume, you are a first class moron. Don’t comment on religions you know nothing about. Enough said.
