“This is a brilliant speech. Realistically won’t do any good unless senate centrists grow consciences, unemployment falls.” Matt Yglesias on Twitter
For all of his good intentions, Obama cannot do it alone. If centrists in Congress persist in focusing on the November midterms instead of what’s right for the country, then all the good intentions in the world won’t do a damn thing.

An oversimplication of what went wrong in Massachusetts? Perhaps, but not by too much.
“When times are bad and people are anxious, it gets directed against the party in power.” -Tom Mann of the Brookings Institution
Until the economy shows real signs of recovery, independents will choose to show their dissatisfaction with Obama. At this point, it matters not what factors led to the current economic situation or who is honestly to blame. When unemployment hovers at 10%, the guy in the White House is the only person on trial. Rational or not, that’s the way it works.
So while progressives attack from the left and conservatives battle away from the right, Dems need to be hopeful that the economic numbers improve dramatically before November. If not, then expect to see many more Scott Browns in Congress.
I know, right now, that the Democrats in Washington are a bit shell-shocked by Scott Brown’s win in Massachusetts. That is understandable. But the solution is not to shut down Congress for the rest of the year. I know some Democrats can’t wait to start using the fact that they only have 59 votes in the Senate as an acceptable excuse for doing nothing. That would be a disaster, and no one–whether they closely follow politics or not–will find that excuse for failing to deliver plausible. This is a warning: make Republican obstructionism your main campaign theme for 2010, and you will lose badly.

Leaving aside political cynicism, this entire affair proves that the GOP is not simply still infected with the vestiges of white supremacy and racism, but is neither aware of the infection, nor understands the disease. Listening to Liz Cheney explain why Harry Reid’s comments were racist, was like listening to me give lessons on the finer points of the comma splice. This a party, rightly or wrongly, regarded by significant portions of the country as a haven for racists. They aren’t simply having a hard time re-branding, they don’t actually understand how and why they got the tag.
These guys are lost.

African-American is a bogus, PC, made-up term. I mean, that’s not a race. Your ancestry is from Africa and now you live in America. Ok so you were brought over — either your family was brought over through the slave trade or you were born here and your family emigrated here or whatever but that is not a race.
Come on Glenn, why not just say it. An all white America would be so much easier for you to accept. If nothing else, there would be no chance of a black guy ever being your president. How great would that be?
Is there a Moron-Bigot-American classification in the census or is that not a race either?
