What Do You Think Of The Republican Party?

.

From Gallup.

More than 7 in 10 Americans use a word or phrase that is clearly negative when providing a top-of-mind reaction to the federal government.

A Sept. 20-21 USA Today/Gallup poll asked respondents what they would say “if someone asked you to describe the federal government in one word or phrase.” The accompanying chart shows the results in graphic form, with the words or phrases displayed according to how frequently they are mentioned.

From a design perspective I like the Gallup word cloud.  I thought we might do a similar sort of thing except we’d replace federal government with ‘Republican Party’ and incorporate your responses in an illustration I’ll post tomorrow.  So here goes:

If someone asked you to describe the Republican Party in one word or phrase, what would you say?

Who Says Lying and Smear Don’t Work?

.

Repeat it enough times and…

Have months of Fox News hyperventilating and right-wing fear mongering over our supposed socialist-in-chief finally paid off? A majority of voters now think President Barack Obama is a socialist, at least according to one new poll.

The poll (PDF) from Democracy Corps finds that 55 percent of likely voters believe that the word “socialist” describes the president either “well” or “very well.”

I’d bet that 99% of those polled would be unable to define socialism but hey, so what.  Enough people have seen the word on teabagger’s protest signs or heard Beck mouth it off twenty times an evening, so it must be true.  Idiots.

Voter Enthusiasm

.

I’m not sure what any of this actually means or how it’ll play out in November but it’s not bad news.

Republican registered voters’ enthusiasm about voting in this year’s midterm elections has declined significantly in recent weeks. As a result, Republicans’ advantage over Democrats on this measure has shrunk from 19 points in early April to 10 points in the latest weekly aggregate.

Still six months to go before the midterms – a lifetime in politics.

Majority Have Confidence in Obama’s Approach to Terrorism

.

According to a new CNN/Opinion Research survey

Nearly two-thirds of people questioned in the poll say they have a moderate or great deal of confidence in the administration to protect the public from future terrorist attacks, up 2 points from August. Thirty-five percent say they have not much or no confidence at all, down 1 point from August.

A number of Republicans have criticized the president over his handling of the attempted bombing of Northwest flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit. But according to the survey, 57 percent approve of the way President Barack Obama’s responded, with 39 percent disapproving of how he handled the situation.

“Only a third of Republicans have a positive view of Obama on this matter, but the key for the administration is the 55 percent of independents who approve of how the president responded to the incident on Christmas Day,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

And for anyone who believes in rational thought, the following is comforting…

“The public seems to react calmly to individual incidents, possibly because most Americans believe that the government cannot prevent every single terrorist plot from occurring.”

So true but it won’t prevent cons from exploiting every terrorist attack which will inevitably come – successful, not successful, real or perceived. And as ugly as it may sound, a successful act of terrorism on American soil is exactly what some on the right secretly hope for.  In their perverted list of priorities, it would guarantee them victory in 2012.
