Sarah Palin – A Sad and Moldering Strangeness…

.

An interesting read in Vanity Fair on the Sound and Fury we know as Sarah Palin.

Palin and the crowd might as well be one. She’s glad to be here with the people of Independence, Missouri, “where so many of you proudly cling to your guns and your religion”—the first laughline in a 40-minute stump speech that alludes to many of the perceived insults she and her audience have suffered together, and that transforms their resentments into badges of honor. Palin waves her scribbled-on palm to the crowd, proclaiming that she’s using “the poor man’s teleprompter.” Of the Obama administration, she says, “They talk down to us. Especially here in the heartland. Oh, man. They think that, if we were just smart enough, we’d be able to understand their policies. And I so want to tell ’em, and I do tell ’em, Oh, we’re plenty smart, oh yeah—we know what’s goin’ on. And we don’t like what’s goin’ on. And we’re not gonna let them tell us to sit down and shut up.”

[...]

Behind the curtain, Piper plays with other children, oblivious to the speech. She runs in circles, plays hide-and-seek, poses for snapshots, and generally acts as if she were in another world—until she gets the signal to do her job: march to the podium, pick up Palin’s speech, and allow Palin to make a public display of maternal affection.

On cue, Piper parts the curtain. As the child appears, a loud and doting “Awww” melts through the crowd.

Sarah Palin’s connection with her audience is complete.

[...]

…anywhere you peel back the skin of Sarah Palin’s life, a sad and moldering strangeness lies beneath.

[...]

Colleen Cottle, who is the matriarch of one of Wasilla’s oldest families, and who served on the city council when Palin was mayor. She says she and her husband, Rodney, will pay a price for speaking candidly about Palin. Their son is one of Todd Palin’s best friends. “But it is time for people to start telling the truth,” Colleen says. She describes the frustrations of trying to do city business with a mayor who “had no attention span—with Sarah it was always ‘What’s the flavor of the day?’ ”; who was unable to take part meaningfully in conversations about budgets because she “does not understand math or accounting—she only knows buzzwords, like ‘balanced budget’ ”; and who clocked out after four hours on most days, delegating her duties to an aide—“but he’ll never talk to you, because he has a state job and doesn’t want to lose it.” This type of conversation is repeated so often that Wasilla starts to feel like something from The Twilight Zone or a Shirley Jackson short story—a place populated entirely by abuse survivors.

The more you find out about who Sarah Palin is, the more justifiable one’s dislike for her becomes and the greater the difficulty in understanding the motivation behind the people who admire her…the people who write stuff like this.

“We would literally walk across hot broken glass for this woman… She’s our family, and you protect your family; it’s like the mafia.”

  1. Biff Humble says:

The rants described in the article make me think of Mussolini, in a skirt.

  2. Rhena says:

I knew long ago that she didn’t understand math, geography, English, history, or science. I saw somewhere that someone said women don’t like her because she is “pretty”. I don’t care what you look like, if you are that stupid and that much of an embarrassment to my my sex, I don’t like you. She makes me embarrassed to be a woman. I hope everyone knows, we aren’t all as stupid and shallow as this thing.

  3. Leonard Rubin says:

When are just going to start ignoring this woman! She is a figment of her own imagination with no sense of honor or truthfulness. She’s a quitter. She couldn’t take a full term as governor and quit to add to her bank account. When will her zealots realize this?

My hope is that Republicans ruin their chances by nominating her for ANY office….never mind President.

Just stop writing about her, enough is enough already of this banal simpleton.

  4. Thorny says:

@Leonard You don’t defeat a Palin by ignoring her. She thrives on exposing only the carefully crafted parts of herself she wishes the public to see. You have to expose her for all to see. It is this that will be her undoing.

  5. Frances says:

The Naughty Monkey Double Dare pumps thing is just too icky to think about unless you’re a guy with some time on his hands.

  6. Janet says:

I read that entire article yesterday. It points out everything we always knew about Mrs. Palin. That part of the one gentleman that you quoted from as being part of Sarah’s family, “it’s like the mafia,” was a real eye opener on why she gets away with so much. Her fame won’t last.

  7. Frances says:

Janet, the Troopergate thing also supports what the article has to say about her sphere of influence. If you cross her or her family, she will make you pay. I’m pretty sure that is why Levi Johnston back-pedaled on his stories about their household – it is highly likely that he was threatened.

  8. Janet says:

Hi Frances! So true! I only commented on the portion to what Mario has pointed out. It would be easy to point out all the other truths from the article as well. It’s a story I’m sharing everywhere. It’s long, but it’s really good and right on the money, word for word.

I wanted to elaborate on what Rhena was saying about Palins outer beauty, those ridiculous comments on other woman are just jealous of Palin because of her looks, I agree with what your saying there, because I have no problem with pretty woman. I was in my day, and I often draw them, in fact I appreciate beauty in woman. The way she looks has very little if anything to do with politics. That kind of comment is so ignorant. More like a high school mean girl attitude. It has no place in politics and only serves to fire up woman everywhere to work harder against her.

  9. T'omm J'Onzz says:

Palin’s “poor-man’s teleprompter” reminds me of a “crazy-person’s cell phone” — simply talking to one’s self.
