You know, religious people often pose the question, “What do you think Jesus would think of the World were he to come back now?”
I wonder what the founders of our Nation would think if they were to come back now?
I’ve been trying to do a little study on the establishment of our country and what drove the “Founding Fathers” and what their intent was. I’m not certain they ever envisioned the “United States Of Today”.
Of course they didn’t envision a ‘United States of Today. How could they? Here’s where I have a problem: the Constitution is not a document frozen in time, cast in concrete and infallible. It’s more of a legal document which lays out the basic tenets of how the country is governed. It is solid, brilliant and has served the country well as it will continue to do in the future. But it should be viewed as a living, breathing work which while unshakable at its core, adapts in certain areas as the nation moves from millennium to millennium.
People who view the Constitution as simply a tree and not a forest are, I believe, mistaken. A document written over 200 years ago could not possibly have foreseen a United States or a world as they now exist. To hang on to every letter written in the document and believe that the Fathers had the foresight or the infallibility of God is to resign oneself to pure frustration. For example, while the concept of militias and an armed people made sense at the time of the birth of the nation, making the same argument now is ridiculous.
@Mario – “For example, while the concept of militias and an armed people made sense at the time of the birth of the nation, making the same argument now is ridiculous.”
I disagree. Now what? Are you going to try to change the Constitution to fit your conception of modern life? When “modern life” changes again, do we change the Constitution again?
Are the hands that carry guns different from the ones that carried them 200 years ago? No, but the mindset of the individuals has changed. The value of human life has decreased in the modern age. Maybe we should work on improving that; then we wouldn’t have to mess with the Constitution.
I had always heard the purpose of the 2nd Amendment was so the citizenry would be armed against an oppressive central government if necessary. An armed citizenry would serve as a deterrent. I have never really looked into it. I DID come up with this article which seems to support that thought. I have not read it all the way through. Don’t have time at the moment and will re-visit it later.
Also, I have heard it theorized that the fact the citizenry is armed would hamper if not thwart a take over by a foreign government. (“Red Dawn”)
“Thus, the well regulated militia necessary to the security of a free state was a militia that might someday fight against a standing army raised and supported by a tyrannical national government. Obviously, for that reason, the Framers did not say “A Militia well regulated by the Congress, being necessary to the security of a free State” — because a militia so regulated might not be separate enough from, or free enough from, the national government, in the sense of both physical and operational control, to preserve the “security of a free State.”
Live by the sword. Die by the sword. And having all the kids die because they play with guns is only collateral damage. It’s OK
Your second amendment protection is your only excuse to keep your guns. Imagine a government of the people and for the people trying to control 300 million people. Ridiculous !
