I keep hearing “marriage is a sacred commitment between one man and one woman”. What makes it “sacred”? In actuality marriage is a civil contract between two people, civil and for some religious, but not for all. I understand that churches teach and the religious preach that the marriage commitment is sacred and ordained by God, but if we as a nation believe that why does the state sanction the marriage union as a contract that can be dissolved? If marriage were entirely the purview of religion why would there need to be civil law involved at all? Obviously it is not.
So changing the law about who can marry is just a legal matter, right? Then why can’t this law like all others be written and revised according to what is best for society in any given time and place?
