Creating that last illustration reminded me of how much I love rain. It calms me and fills me with a sense of peace. I haven’t done it in a while but I used to take great joy in taking walks in summer rainstorms – barefoot, no umbrella and always making sure to step in every puddle I’d come across.
When the kids were little, one of our fun things to do would be to go out on the back deck in the middle of a downpour and get soaked to the skin. Often it was against their mother’s wishes who’d concern herself with trivial stuff like wet clothes and pneumonia. I was less concerned about such matters. It was our way of being naughty without being bad and these many years later, the kids still speak of the fond memories those times evoke. I miss those times.
Below is one of my favorite pics.
The other thought that comes to mind is that I haven’t heard Jose Feliciano’s Rain in the longest of times. Love that song.
Hope you all have yourselves a great weekend…and if it happens to rain wherever you are, consider taking a long wet walk outdoors. And don’t forget to listen to the falling rain as you step into those puddles.
I probably shouldn’t mention this, but back in my hippie days when I had left the military and decided that I was really a pacifist at heart I lived in rural Sumner County, Tennessee. When it rained it was a ritual to get a bottle of Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Castile Soap and go outside in the buff for a cleansing shower. Good for both the body and the soul.
Nice post and picture, Mario. I love the smell of rain and the freshness it brings to everything, too. We live in a contemporary house that has no attic so when it rains it sounds wonderful beating down on the roof. One of my favorite things is lying in bed listening to the soothing sound of the rain. :)
I like storms. I remember lying on my back in the yard of my childhood home watching the dark clouds and lightning. My sister asked me what I was doing and I said, “Watching the fireworks.” She said, “What fireworks?” and I told her, “Mother Nature’s”. She didn’t understand then, and she doesn’t until this day.
My mother was a stay-at-home mom until I was about nine or so, then she went back into part-time work. Before then, though, there were afternoons when she kept me indoors because of impending bad weather. Dinner was cooking, and I was sitting at the kitchen window watching the dark clouds swirl and gather while the smell of the food filled the air and the windows steamed up. At those times, I felt safe, sheltered and secure, know my mother was close, my father would soon be home and dinner was on the way. I think that’s why I like storms.
Maybe I should say I liked storms. Yesterday, we had a brief thunderstorm, and the power blinked off and on eight times in twenty minutes. I called the electric utility company, and in the middle of my report, the power blinked off again and cut off my call (I have internet phone, and when the power goes out, I can’t call). In the ten years I have lived in this location, there have been extended blackouts of an hour or more four or five times a year. People in this block say that if a squirrel sneezes the power goes down. Now, when the clouds gather, I back stuff up and shut down. I can thank Scott Walker’s deregulation mania for that.
Great pic of you and your kids, also the one of Obama…..don’t think I have ever seen that one. Love the subject of rain and like others have said, it’s my favorite thing to lay in bed and listen to the rain.
My mother loved to tell this story, when I was little and she couldn’t find me she would go outside and there I was butt naked with my Zorro cape on swirling around in the pouring rain, sometimes even singing Que sara sara. So, as you can imagine, whenever it rains I always think of my mom (she has passed) and she too would also think of me. It even makes me a little teary eyed writing this.
Thanks you for sharing your memories, which brings back mine for a moment in time.
Loved the memories and the picture with your kids, Mario. And thanks for the new pic of Obama in the rain. I’m guessing that was today. That “Firms” ad and the Bain attacks this week prompted Romney into taking a day off at his NH lakefront Estate. After just getting back from a week off . And he’s getting ready to go to the Olympics to watch the dancing ponies and do a fund raiser. Man sure takes a lot of time off for someone applying for the toughest job in the world.
Good thing we’ve never had a businessman who liked vacations as President before. Oh, wait….
I know what you mean there Mario. When my kids were growing up in the mountains of Colorado, we would sit in the doorway and watch the storms come up valley and slowly engulf our town…then climb the mesa we live on spewing lightning, bellowing thunder…the shivers of anticipation of the next flash…..the expectation of the sound…..the closeness of our little group closing ranks until we fit on one chair….being surrounded by the storm, the wind, the wildness of being in the center of the action….Being scared at first, then the storm passes by…the sun comes out to warm our bodies and our souls…Years later, I now share this with my grandson…who, at nine years old understands the force of the storm, and we become much closer to each other as I tell him stories about his lost mother, and how we would do the same thing…..Love IS life.
Mario: Thought I was the only rain-walker around. Told that I was crazy. Now that I’ve turned 73, I just don’t care. Will be stomping in puddles and feel the blessed rain drops on my head and eyeglasses until I die. Yours, Richard Berryman
Aww, this makes me feel all snuggly wuggly.. You are a beautiful person, Mario. Love the family photo. Such happy looking children.
The last down pour I experienced was in Sacramento, when my Hubby took me to see River Dance. My Christmas present that year. Such fun! I’m wheelchair bound, but use a power chair now, and had to worry about electrocution, but that was a fun wild ride from the theater to the car. 10 blocks in a solid down pour. I loved it! The few times I felt free, and hysterical, and it was awesome.
Next time, I will have a cover on my chair, and I’m gonna dance in the rain.
Happy Sunday afternoon, everyone.

A reader submitted this photo of the President determined to speak in the middle of a downpour. Fits right into our rain theme. Perfect.

I can guarantee one thing, Mario, if this drought ever ends I will be outside DANCING in the rain!!
