Face of the Day

My granddaughter, Leena, at 10 AM this morning.
Leena

She’s now 5 1/2 weeks and flashed her first little hesitant smile yesterday.

I love this little princess.

  1. BoJoFlo says:

What a beautiful little ‘princess’ with all that beautiful hair.
She is gorgeous and absolutely perfect.

    Congratulations, Grandpa. ?

  2. BoJoFlo says:

BTW – That ? was a mistake — was supposed to be a heart —
but it did not turn out correctly.

Just know I am sending ‘virtual’ hearts with love to her and family.

  3. Cute. Thank you, BoJoFlo.

I thought the ‘?’ was put in as a way of asking whether I was to be called grandpa. It’s going to be granddad.

  4. Charlie Sommers says:

Be a Pawpaw Mario, that name has a certain irreverence that endears you to the little ones. There is a good chance that you will end up with whatever name that little angel puts on you. She is beautiful by the way.

  5. Gary D. says:

I get to be a ‘Boppa’ and it suits me just fine. My grandson couldn’t say grandpa and came up with Boppa and the others followed his lead.

Whatever they call you, they are wonderful and give hope for a bright future. Are her eyelashes still a foot long? Can’t quite tell in this image if those are lashes or a shadow.

  6. Karen Weston says:

Wow — 5-1/2 weeks have gone by already??!! She certainly is a beauty, Mario — that is one awesome head of hair!
We expect you to keep us updated with pics, Grandad!!

  7. They’re her eyelashes, Gary. Long and beautiful. I’d be okay with just about any name except Nono. It’s what I called one of my grandfathers but it’s way too old school for me. Charlie, I think I’ll pass on Pawpaw but thank you for the thought.

Karen, I’m going to make Leena a Face of the Day Monday feature. I’ll try my best to stay away from the silly stuff (like stuffing her in a pea pod.)

  8. What a doll – You’ll get what she names you, Mario — My first granddaughter dubbed me “Marker” — and it’s been that way ever since. Although now that she’s in her twenties, I do sometimes get “Grandma Marker”

Let it be her own special name. That will make it all the more precious to you.

  9. Charlie Sommers says:

An old maid aunt lived with us when I was a child. My older sister tried to say Aunt Ruth but only came out with Anee. Aunt Ruth died in 1989 at the age of 97 and her tombstone bears the inscription “We love you Anee” Made-up family names can be endearing.

I sound like a restaurant or a meatball sandwich as my grandkids have called me Papa Charlie for the last 21 years.

  10. Dee Loralei says:

She’s still adorable, Mario. I like the idea of a pic a day, especially as politics will get more crazy the closer we get to Nov.

One of my much younger cousins couldn’t say Grandma, so we all started calling our grandmother GaGa. My sister has her kids calling our mother GeGe. And I told sis that means her kids can call her GooGoo.

I had 5 Great-Grandparents and 4 Grandparents when I was younger, so keeping track of all of them in conversations or even in my head was pretty difficult. Not too mention the 2 great Uncle George’s and the uncle George too. LOL.

  11. Karen Weston says:

I love your Face of the Day idea, Mario. Perfect! You are so right, Diana — he will get whatever Leena decides to call him, despite the moniker he has in mind! LOL. Our first grandson has called his grandfather “PeePaw” from the time he first started talking, and my husband had no choice in the matter. :)

I know firsthand about the special bond between a little girl and her grandpa. My paternal grandparents raised my sister and I after our parents divorced when I was two. My grandfather was the nearest and dearest person in our lives, and even though he is gone now, he still holds first place in my heart. He gave us his love, security, and stability — everything we needed to grow up to be responsible adults. I will be eternally grateful for that relationship with my grandpa — he was my hero.

Thank you, Mario, and I will stay tuned for your next Face of the Day featuring baby Leena. :)
