Here’s a reminder of what makes the United States a great nation.
The Obama administration has opened the way for foreign women who are victims of severe domestic beatings and sexual abuse to receive asylum in the United States. The action reverses a Bush administration stance on an issue at the center of a protracted and passionate legal battle over the possibilities for battered women to become refugees.
In addition to meeting the existing strict conditions for being granted asylum, abused women need to show a judge that women are viewed as subordinate by their abuser, according to a court filing by the administration, and must also show that domestic abuse is widely tolerated in their country.
The US is one of a few group of nations (Canada, UK and Australia are some of the others) which gives hope to the oppressed of the world. While not easy, I can imagine that even a flicker of hope to an innocent victim living under conditions of oppression, can be life saving. Imagine yourself or a loved one being the person in this story and having no place to turn.
The administration laid out its position in an immigration appeals court filing in the case of a woman from Mexico who requested asylum, saying she feared she would be murdered by a common law husband there. According to court documents filed in San Francisco, the man repeatedly raped her at gunpoint, held her captive, stole from her and at one point attempted to burn her alive when he learned she was pregnant.
Strip aside all of the surface layers to get to the raw essence of a person’s being and it will always be the traits of empathy and compassion which best defines who they are.
The same can equally be said of nations.

I’m not sure empathy and compassion are traits Republicans understand. From the same NYT piece:
“As recently as last year, Bush administration lawyers had argued in the same case that battered women could not meet the strict standards of American asylum law.”
@Mario Thanks for bringing attention to this issue and rhythmically written piece btw.
I am ecstatic the Obama Administration is overturning the Bush Administration’s stance on asylum for victims of severe domestic and sexual abuse.
Most of these women do not even know they can have an existence outside their particular oppression and when they find out there is one, sometimes only that hope gives these women and young children the ability to live through their oppression day after day.
I join with Janine and Randi and the others that you have done a great job capturing the essence of the importance of what nations can do to share in core values with the world. Thank you for putting those words out where all of us could share them!
Being a survivor of abuse and domestic violence and having even lost pregnancies to the power and rage of men, I can feel for that woman burned when she was pregnant. My heart goes out to her. I hope she somehow will know that she is not alone and that others do care about her. Thanks again Mario!

Domestic violence or abuse or any kind whether physical or mental is not acceptable.
But the abuse that some of these African women have to experience is untolerable. Its torture. I am glad someone opened their eyes and is attempting to do something.
By mentioning the African women don’t get me wrong, does not mean I do not validate the rest of the abuses we women suffer.

Change is painful and fearful. Women do not want to speak up or leave their abusive environment because of this. Awareness helps. But as with the homeless issue in america we need to find housing for these women with or without children.
We have to take care of our people. Meaning the people of the world. Every time I think about solutions for all these issues it all goes back to the housing issue. Housing brings peace and dignity to a mentally ill person and helps with their mental health. Housing as well helps women that are desperate to leave their abusive relationships and fear not having a place to lay down their head and that of their children.
I can tell you that housing is the answer to many of america’s problems. Affordable housing. We have burst the real estate bubble and there is no affordable housing for our disabled, our sick, our elderly, our abused, and now above all our unemployed. That would be my focus to start solving these abusive relationships either self-emposed or by someone else.
Right on Josephine! I work with the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless and we keep on working to get housing for every person. Housing is a human right! It is part of the International Human Rights agreement. The U.S. is a signatory to that document. Housing is always the key to the stabilization of families, cities, states and nations. Thanks Mario, for a great article!

Repairing our greatness is what faces President Obama. Our status and moral standing in the world has taken a beating over the last 8 years.

What a great statement. Thank you for putting into words the things most of feel, but can’t always find the right words.
