The Realities of Illegal Immigration

.

This is sad.

The number of deaths among illegal immigrants crossing the Arizona desert from Mexico is soaring so high this month that the medical examiner’s office that handles the bodies is using a refrigerated truck to store some of them, the chief examiner said Friday.

The bodies of 40 illegal immigrants have been brought to the office of Pima County Medical Examiner Dr. Bruce Parks since July 1. At that rate, Parks said the deaths could top the single-month record of 68 in July 2005 since his office began tracking them in 2000.

Yes, I know they’re immigrants trying to get into the country illegally.  Got that part.  But these poor souls are also human beings and if nothing else, it should get you thinking as to how desperate some people are to better their lives that they would risk those very lives by crossing a desert in 100 degree temperature.   I don’t know what the answer is to stemming illegal immigration but I do know that anyone who believes that erecting a fence is going to stop them, simply does not understand what drives these people.

I know of a young Nicaraguan woman who has not seen her infant child in two years.  After her husband’s death, she made her way alone to Miami where she works seven days a week as a nanny, sending most of her paycheck back to her mother who is raising the child.  She had given up hope of ever finding a better life in her place of birth and did what she felt best for the welfare of her daughter.

Demonize her if you will, call her a filthy illegal if that comforts you but it well get you no closer to stopping her and the millions like her who do not see borders as insurmountable obstacles in seeking a better life for themselves and loved ones. The reality is that for as long as there exists a disparity of wealth and opportunity between nations, illegal immigration will continue to be a part of that reality.

And no, I am not suggesting one ignore the issue for to do so would only exacerbate the problem.   But to naively believe that any law or laws will completely halt illegal immigration is to fail to understand human nature.  The secret, I imagine, lies in finding that point of equilibrium where common sense and reality meet up with compassion and understanding.  Not a simple task.

In a perfect world there always exists clean, easy to implement solutions to every problem.  In the real world though…not so much.

The fence proponents know that it will not change anything, but they use it as a means of intimidation. They hate anyone who is not a white anglo republican. These are the same people who walk around Phoenix with guns. They don’t want change that they can’t control. They vilify hispanics because they were brought up to hate them. So hearing that scores of people are literally burning to death in the desert does not faze them. I have lived here for 18 years. It is a VERY racist society. I lived in NYC and it’s nothing like out here. That’s why we have all this bigots in office that push through these racist laws. The moderate politicians are afraid of them. They ALL have guns and most of them are not that bright. (Arizona is 49th in education funding, only trailing Mississippi) It’s still the wild west out here.
By the way, it was 100 degrees in May. Now it’s 115. Down where the crossing occur it’s usually 120. With NO water anywhere.

I live in a trailer park that is populated primarily by Hispanics, I am sure many of them are illegal. One young man from southern Mexico exemplified the problem many of them face. He was unable to find a job in his hometown and had a sick wife and two small children to provide for. He checked the road for legal immigration and found he would have a waiting period of up to eight years. He struck out on his own, entered the country illegally and found employment in two menial jobs that, even though they were low paying, provided for his wants and payed the bills for his family.

I was saddened when he was caught and deported, he remained incarcerated in Mississippi for three months awaiting deportation.

I have grown children but when I was younger I would certainly have done something similar to provide for them. Both jobs that Raphael held were table busing and dish washing jobs. I have seen none of the local citizens standing in line for any jobs like this.

From Dan Kwan on Facebook comment:

Coming 2 America as a refugee myself, I empathize with anyone who seek a better life fo rthemselves and theirr children. But there are times when you have to stay and make a stand in your own country. the root of evil is not in our immigration policies but in the socio-politicss of Mexico and other south America countries where the disparity between the ruling class and the miserly living condition of the poor cannot be tolerated. I only wish that the passion, the organization talent, the compassion demonstrated for illegal immigration concerns can be channeled instead to help overthrow those corrupt governments like Mexico that does such a damning disservice to its own people. While America remains a beacon for immigrants, It is the time for all poor people of the world to rise up take control of their destinies.

    Illregularjoe;
Almost everything you said in your post I consider to be
incorrect and I live basically in the same environment illegal
    Imagination wise as you….
If a law s unjust then lets get rid of the law and have open
borders— I was not raised a bigot and I cant think of anybody
    I hate.
And before you say it — I care about Human suffering as much
    as anyone.

  5. Benny says:

Greg. I don’t think Joe was saying that EVERY Arizonian is a racist. Also, there is something in between unjust laws and open borders. Getting rid of one extreme does not mean adopting the other extreme.

  6. Ena says:

This is what i think about this article .I have lived in a couple of different States and Countries including AZ .It wasn’t this frightening when i lived there .I think people are getting hateful and fearful because of globalization and terrorism .(It’s easy for terrorists to cross the border and pass away for being Mexican some of their fear is justified ).But sometimes they target Minorities because they cannot think and reason. For instance with outsourcing they should blame their CEO s for sending their jobs overseas but instead they will blame it on the country that’s getting those jobs .
I think the Governments all over the world needs to look in the best interest of their people and address reform .Hope they look into work permits for those Mexicans who want to work in the US .In the Middle East they have a system that works where people come from Asian countries like India and Philippines on work permits. There are hateful people all over the world it’s best not to give them power by drawing attention to them .To me all they seem to be are bullies who have been taught to hate without reason.

  7. charliesommers says:

It is interesting to note that the worst cases of terrorism we have ever been subjected to were perpetrated by American citizens or foreigners who entered our country legally. Cracking down on people entering the country illegally from Mexico will have virtually no effect on this but the ensuing racial profiling, which will happen, will adversely effect Native Americans and American citizens of Hispanic descent.

  8. Greg says:

    charlie,
You forgot to mention illegals, it will also adversely
    effect illegals.

  9. charliesommers says:

You are right Greg but I am much more concerned with the adverse effects on legitimate citizens. Kinda like tossing out the baby with the bath water.

  10. Greg says:

Yea I guess I might be right,, then again I could very well be
wrong, these are interesting and confusing times.
I now more then ever think of the Carl Sagan philosophy as he
would question as to weather or not mankind was smart enough
to get threw our technological adolescents without blowing
    ourselves up…..
