This video is old but I’m posting it for a number of reasons. 1. I like baseball. 2. I love Denis Leary’s sick, sick humor. 3. I think it’s funny and finally, I’m posting it ’cause I really don’t like Mel Gibson and his Jew-hating ways. Anytime I can laugh at this bigoted, alcoholic fool, it’s a good day. .

This is really not worthy of comment beyond I would get a good laugh out of seeing your hysterical rant if this were Beck or someone similar puking out that kind of ignorance.
I’m sorry, Mario, I have never disagreed with you before. Guess this marks the first time. I am listening to the Kennedy funeral and the 3 brothers documentary on MSNBC and I’m in a mood for us to just all get along and why do we have to talk in ways that revile one another and why do we have to kick someone when they’re down. Mel was in rehab. Mario, do you know how tough rehab can be, facing yourself and your addictions? What did Mel Gibson ever do that was so bad that these probably half drunk themselves “sportscasters” had to debase themselves acting like jackasses on the public airwaves? He made a film about Jesus that some disliked but he had a perfect right to express his feeling on film. I thought it controversial but very well produced. Jim McKay, Al Michaels, John Madden and yes, even Keith Olbermann and others like them of higher caliber wouldn’t be caught dead acting like this! I have a degree in broadcast journalism and I did part of my time in study on sportscasting and this video you just aired would only be used as a sorry excuse for what one should never do as a professional broadcaster. Please use better judgment next time. If you are just getting desperate for something to put on your blog space, please contact me and I will most happy to write another blog article that can generate lots of response talking about more important and less inaccurate, disreputable material. I’d be happy to oblige!
No, I am not desperate to put things up on my blog. I found this video genuinely funny. You missed the emphasis here. It was not Gibson’s problems with addiction that was the point of attack. It is the man’s bigotry toward Jews.
You wrote a post a month back about Mormons and your personal dislike toward them. Fine. That is your opinion and while some agreed with you, others did not. That’s the way it goes.
My equivalent to your problem with Mormons, is religious bigotry and in particular anti-Semitic talk of any kind. I have zero tolerance for that sort of thing. The issue that Leary refers to in the video was Gibson’s drunken rant when in 2006 he said to a police officer:
Fucking Jews. The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world. Are you a Jew?
Well tell you what, Melody…that sort of talk brings with it all the mocking and scorn which he deserves. You don’t have to like everything I post here. I’m fine with that but I remind you that the blog is called MarioPiperniDotCom and as such, it expresses the thoughts and opinions of Mario Piperni. Agree, disagree, like what I say or hate what I say…it’s all good. That’s the idea.
So with all due respect, I do not need coaching on using “better judgment next time.” I need check with no one but myself. I found the video funny and it touched on a subject I find important, anti-Semitic behavior. Mel Gibson is an anti-semite who happens to be a drunk. He is also a public figure and part of the deal when one is a bigot, a drunk, an adulterer and in the public eye is that you are open to being mocked by comedians.
Mario, Mel was drunk when he said that. He later more than apologized. He did not truly feel that way. That is what I meant when I said he was facing his addictions. I saw him over and over and over again appear on lots of different venues apologizing and telling everyone who would listen that that is not how he truly feels. I have had a loved relative who I know loves his family and he ended up calling them jackasses during a drunken episode. That man no more thinks his family are jackasses than the man in the moon!! He deeply loves them and he apologized over and over. They accepted his apology and they still love him to this day. Never did they abandon him during his drinking days. He is over 3 years sober now and still very much loved. Please understand that people say and do things when they are drunk that they would never truly mean in a million years. Why don’t we choose the path of compassion and understanding? Why is that so hard? Do we have to keep Mel Gibson over the coals years later way after he deeply apologized and has quit drinking??? In this country we need to be a bit more compassionate.
My Mormon thing does not say that the Mormons are slobs or goons or anything like that. I simply point out that the people at the top are exhibiting extremely bad behaviors that they need to be accountable for. I don’t hate them in any way. In fact, I feel sorry for them in how misguided they are. I also don’t distribute rants like that video against them. I simply “report” what they are doing and ask for accountability. That is all, which is the job of a reporter which is what my training was. I feel that I have adhered to that.I call the behavior bad while knowing that many Mormon people are very good people. Only the leadership do I hold accountable.
This is the first time I have ever disagreed with you on something but I guess I just don’t like laughing at someone elses expense. I like humor that is just funny, not slamming someone, especially in public over and over for minutes at a time on a national broadcast. I can still affirm that that broadcast would never be found acceptable in any school of broadcasting. It would be considered unprofessional.
At least if we must disagree, I’m glad it is about something of principle and importance! Thanks for an interesting disagreement.
People should stop misrepresenting their personal opinion that MG is a hot-headed bigot as a rational fact. It’s a wrongful, prejudiced assumption. First, one has to believe that people are never unfair, or drunk people are never unfair, to consider the type of incident that took place in 2006 proof that a person is a bigot, and such ignorance would make one unfit to judge in any case. Secondly, this incident was in reality a once in a lifetime event that shouldn’t be misrepresented as the opposite, a characteristic trait. When people have to twist a point to make a point not only do they not have a point, they have additionally cast doubt on their motives and/or ability to reason in a sound way. Also, if misbehaving at one point in our lives, in an extreme set of circumstances, would make us hateful human beings, not a lot of us could honestly claim to be reasonable and decent anymore – including most of those attacking MG. Is it unlikely that one would have taken cheap shots under the circumstances MG was in at the time? Quite the contrary. Who wouldn’t feel bullied if ever arrested, it’s just an instinctive reaction to having our freedom taken away. And when are we most likely to take a cheap shot; when we feel bullied ourselves. Additionally, when is it most likely that we would give in to that type of emotion instead of remaining fair; when our defenses are down, which is the case when we have consumed alcohol. More and more people, fans and non-fans alike, have become increasingly alarmed by the amount of hatred coming MG’s way. Contrary to MG, who misbehaved once and apologized for it, these people go on and on and show no remorse. Some even seem to gloat – proudly parading their hatred as if it makes them better some way. The time that we are willing to take these continual attacks seriously is over. It looks a lot like bigotry itself. Whether MG is a bigot remains to be seen, many of those attacking him however are at least themselves infected with the disease they accuse him of having; a hateful, bigoted attitude with no ability and/or willingness to deal with emotions and facts in a balanced and unbiased way.
There is a prevailing theory that drunk people tell the truth. That alcohol loosens not only the tongue but inhibitions. Perhaps MG expressed his true views while under the influence of alcohol. Views that he would not have expressed in otherwise polite politically correct company.
@janine – I think there is a more prevailing theory that Drunk People sometimes act pretty stupid.
Considering there were no incidents before and none after, why not give him the benefit of the doubt. If these guys are sober, I find their tirade much more offensive than anything some drunk might say in the process of being arrested.
In the end. I don’t care. I don’t like baseball. I HATED the movie “The Passion”, and I’m not a huge fan of Mel Gibson or Leary. And I agree with Melody’s comments.
As a matter of fact, I’m not even sure why I’m commenting on this post because I really don’t care. :-)
Let’s not give alcohol more credit than it deserves. It is not exactly an intelligent substance. Just like it can’t selectively target the functioning of one leg (but effects the entire body in general) it is not able to selectively effect just one of the many standards we set in day to day life – it effects them all equally and makes us do all sorts of stupid things we normally don’t agree with. Yes, it can make us state truths we would normally keep to ourselves, it can just as easily however do the exact opposite and make us give in to taking a cheap shot – especially if we feel bullied. A very likely scenario in this case. That’s how it tends to feel when our freedom is taken away, even if the reason is just.
This is really not worthy of comment beyond I would get a good laugh out of seeing your hysterical rant if this were Beck or someone similar puking out that kind of ignorance.
So you find that funny? Hmmmm…..
Frickin hilarious!
Denis Leary is great. Mel Gibson just needs some chicken soup.
Aw, Larry is upset that Leary made fun of his buddy Mel. I wonder if he shares Mel’s thoughts on Jews too? Not that anyone gives cares.
