Sexual Orientation – A Battle Between Idiots and Science

.

Anyone who has wasted any time attempting to debate sexual orientation with homophobes must at some point come to the conclusion that bigotry will triumph over science each and every time.  Case in point, Republican Senate candidate Ken Buck of Colorado on Meet the Press.

GREGORY: In a debate last month, you expressed your support for don’t ask, don’t tell, which we talked about with Mr. Gibbs. And you alluded to lifestyle choices. Do you believe that being gay is a choice?

BUCK: I do.

GREGORY: Based on what?

BUCK: Based on what?

GREGORY: Yeah, do you believe that?

BUCK: Well, I guess you can choose who your partner is.

GREGORY: You don’t think it’s something that’s determined at birth?

BUCK: I think that birth has an influence over it, like alcoholism and some other things, but I think that basically you have a choice.

Buck got stuck on answering what his views on sexual orientation were based on.  Naturally.  He was unwilling to state on national television that his beliefs are based on nothing more than his disdain for homosexuals and what he undoubtedly believes is a perverse lifestyle.   Another clear example of idiocy over science.

The American Psychological Association, the American Medical Association and every leading scientific organization in the world which has studied this issue are wrong but James Dobson’s Focus on the Family and Tony Perkins’ Family Research Council are right.

How discouraging to think that in the year 2010 this “debate” is still going on.  How do you fix stupid?

Mario – You vote to keep it out of office in the first place, or remove it if it gets there by mistake.

  2. E.A. Blair says:

If stupidity were a capital offense, we wouldn’t have room to bury all the bodies.

This is a case of willful ignorance, fueled by cognitive dissonance. It can’t be helped, cured or overcome. There’s a good book on just this topic: “Mistakes Were Made (But Not By Me): Why We Justify Foolish Beliefs, Bad Decisions, and Hurtful Acts” by Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson. I recommend it.

  3. Ermilo says:

Ken Buck is either an idiot or just a hateful homophobe, or both. If it were a choice, who in their right mind would make that choice with all of the hatred and ridicule going on. Especially like kids in high school. People like him are so out of touch I don’t understand why any one would even give him the time of day. I wonder if stupidity is a choice. If it is I guess that’s his choice. I sure hope voters put him where he belongs come Nov. 2nd. And I don’t mean in the Senate.

  4. Kathryn says:

It’s obvious that Ken Buck is stupid and a hateful homophobia when he states that homosexuality is a disease, like alcoholism. I guess you can’t teach a hopelessly ignorant person the facts proven by science. Then he seems to be he guilty of being totally insensitive when he said he would not take a case of rape to trial, because he believed the woman in the case had “buyers remorse”. Even if the woman had been in a relationship with her attacker, if she said NO and he forced himself on her, it was RAPE. God help us if fools like this get into congress

  5. ocLiberal says:

We already have fools like this in Congress. I almost swallowed my own tongue the day Virginia Fox stood on the floor of Congress in front of Mathew Shepard’s mother and said: “we know that that young man was killed in the commitment of a robbery. It wasn’t because he was gay.”

Right, Virginia, He wasn’t killed because he was murdered by violent homophobes, it was because he robbed a nice straight red-neck boy and his friend… She is such a pathetic bitch.
