Peter King’s Campaign Of Hate

Did the McCarthy era witch hunts teach these people nothing?

Next month, House Homeland Security Committee chairman Peter King (R-NY) will hold hearings on the domestic threat posed by Muslim Americans. Echoing McCarthyist rhetoric of the 1950s, King recently argued that Muslims aren’t “American” when it comes to war.

This week, King went on the Laura Ingraham Show to discuss his upcoming investigation. The guest host asked King how many American mosques he thought were “infected” by “radical jihad sentiment.” King, who in the past declared that there are “too many mosques in this country” and called Muslims “an enemy living amongst us,” was unabashed in his belief that “over 80 percent of mosques in this country are controlled by radical Imams”:

In fact

A two-year study by a group of academics on American Muslims and terrorism concluded that contemporary mosques are actually a deterrent to the spread of militant Islam and terrorism. The study was conducted by professors with Duke’s Sanford School of Public Policy and the University of North Carolina. It disclosed that many mosque leaders had put significant effort into countering extremism by building youth programs, sponsoring antiviolence forums and scrutinizing teachers and texts.

Where else but under the GOP small tent would haters of gays, non-Christians, immigrants, blacks and minorities converge for their perpetual hate-fest activities? There’s simply no other way to view it: there exists an element within the Republican party which fosters hate and divisiveness of the sort displayed by Mr. King.

And where is the leadership within the GOP condemning the words and actions of Peter King – a man who has in effect declared all American Muslims worthy of suspicion as he raises Islamophobic fervor another notch.

Have these people forsaken all sense of decency and honesty in their quest for political gain?  Yes, of course they have. It’s what these small-minded bastards do.

Republicans Eat Their Own – Again

.

Even when a Republican politician does the right thing, right-wing bigots can’t help themselves but let their hate get the best of them.

Last week, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (R) announced seven judgeship appointments to the New Jersey Superior Court, including the appointment of Sohail Mohammed to serve on the court in Passaic County.

[...]

Several prominent anti-Muslim voices on the right have reacted with characteristic vitriol to the elevation of a Muslim in the U.S. justice system, calling Mohammed “the enemy”

Typical of the venomous reaction from the right was chief Muslim hater, Pam Geller.

Governor Christie looked and sounded like he could be presidential. He’s not. He’s in bed with the enemy. All the other stuff doesn’t matter if you don’t have your freedom…what a crushing disappointment. He is off the list. The GOP field for 2012 is narrowing.

And typical of the reaction from Geller’s readers was this:

UNBELIEVABLE!!!

We WERE ATTACKED AND INVADED ON 9/11/2001!!

Got it. America was attacked on 9/11 by terrorists. The terrorists were Muslim. All Muslims are therefore the enemy. Any politician fraternizing with the enemy is…well, is fraternizing with the enemy making them unsuitable for public office…at least in the eyes of Islamophobes who appear to occupy an ever increasing portion of the conservative movement.

Clearly, Geller is a bigot and an asshole. No surprise there after watching her spearhead the drive to stop the construction of a mosque a few blocks from Ground Zero in New York. She is not alone in her criticism of Christie for appointing a Muslim to the bench. Jonathan S. Tobin wrote, “appointment of Sohail Mohammed to the court shows that his [Christie's] judgment on the issue of support for terrorism is highly questionable.”

And Christie was one of their heroes – a tough guy conservative who could duke it out with anyone.  Now conservatives like Geller regard him as the enemy.  What a crazy bunch.

You can add Muslim-hater to the list of qualifications if one wishes to run as a Republican in 2012.

Prejudice and Bigotry In Arizona

.

Of course, hate exists beyond the borders of Arizona.  Sheriff Clarence Dupnik:

“When you look at unbalanced people, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government. The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous. And unfortunately, Arizona I think has become sort of the capital. We have become the mecca for prejudice and bigotry.”

Anyone listening?

New Year, Same Old Bigotry

.

Hyperbolic nonsense doesn’t get much dumber than this.

Mr. Obama – again with GOP help – succeeded in getting “don’t ask, don’t tell” (DADT) repealed, enabling homosexuals to serve openly in the military. This is one of the most revolutionary and damaging acts ever done to a core American institution. It will decimate the greatest fighting force on earth, undermining unit cohesion, morale and discipline – the lifeblood of a successful military. It is an act of national suicide.

Revolutionary act? National suicide?

Repealing DADT was the right thing to do. End of story. But one of the side benefits of repeal is the knowledge that it pisses off homophobes and hate-mongers as much as it does.  One does derive a bit of satisfaction in that.

.

Republicans Hard At Work Mainstreaming Hate

.

What is it with Republican politicians in Texas and their asinine brand of politics?

An opponent of Joe Straus, the Jewish speaker of the Texas state Legislature, defended an e-mail in which he said he wanted “a true Christian, conservative running it.”

The e-mail from John Cook continues a controversy among Texas Republicans over whether to support Straus, a Republican.

The Texas Observer obtained e-mails last week in an exchange between a Straus backer and Cook, a Straus opponent on the state party’s Republican Executive Committee, in which Cook says, “We elected a house with Christian, conservative values. We now want a true Christian, conservative running it.”

A full-fledged campaign by various conservative organizations is underway to oust Straus.  Here’s a sampling of emails they’re sending out

“Straus is going down in Jesus’ name.”

“[W]e finally found a Christian conservative who decided not to be pushed around by the Joe Straus thugs.”

“…that our nation will again prosper and hold to values that the Christians and Republicans hold so dear in their souls.”

Bigotry and hate have always been a part of politics, so no big surprise there.  Of more concern, however, is how Republicans of the type fighting to get Joe Straus defeated no longer make any attempt to hide their bigoted ways.  Within conservative circles, you would almost think that hatred for Jews, Muslims and gays has gone mainstream.
