The Democratically-controlled Virginia Senate has voted to allow concealed weapons permit holders to carry guns in restaurants that serve alcohol, as long as the person carrying the weapon does not drink. The gun bill passed on a 22 to 18 vote, after senators had a vigorous debate about whether or not people might have a reasonable reason to carry guns in restaurants.
The arguments from both sides were interesting to say the least.
Sen. Emmett Hanger (R), who sponsored the measure, said he was doing so on behalf of those who now violate the law that prohibits guns in such establishments rather than leave their weapons in their cars when they go out to eat. He said this was a particular issue for women who carry guns in their purses to defend themselves when they go to, say, Red Lobster. (That was Hanger’s example.)
Others argued guns have no place in eating establishments where alcohol is being served. Though the bill would prohibit a weapons carrier from drinking, the opponents said it would be impossible to tell if the law was being violated if the gun was concealed.
The debate was concluded by Sen. Mary Margaret Whipple (D). “As a final comment, let me just say this. I’ve really never been afraid for my life at the Red Lobster,” she said.
Where the hell is Wyatt Earp when you need him?

I do not understand this crazy obsession with carrying weapons in public. Why is this necessary? You would have to be crazy to step into a drinking establishment where guns are allowed. I use to support people’s right to bare arms, but the more guns from strangers allowed in public, the more people are going to think twice about going out and about in public. I don’t usually fear for my life when I go out, but I’m starting to now. I just don’t get this mentality at all!
“The Democratically-controlled Virginia Senate has voted to allow concealed weapons permit holders to carry guns in restaurants that serve alcohol, as long as the person carrying the weapon does not drink.”
The above statement is not an accurate assessment of the recently passed legislation. In fact, such permit holders are already legally permitted to carry firearms in establishments where alcohol is served for consumption upon the premises. However, at present, such carried firearms must be openly displayed. This legislation will permit carriers of firearms to conceal their firearms, rather than require that they be openly displayed.
Given that a number of other states also permit the carrying of concealed deadly weapons in restaurant establishments where alcohol is served for consumption upon the premises, it should be a simple matter for opponents of such an allowance to cite incidents occurring in those states caused by individuals legally carrying a firearm into such an establishment to demonstrate that their expressed concerns are justified. I do not understand why, thus far, they have not done so.
Sounds like they need a laugh track in VA’s legislature.
You just never know when one of those lobster’s are gonna attack and one MUST be ready! Lord knows that small penis will be of no use.
Seriously. If I thought I needed to be carrying heat in order to go to the local McDonald’s, then there are obviously bigger problems in the State which won’t be solved by an individual carrying a weapon.
VA being a traditionally Republican State has apparently not addressed that issue.
” If I thought I needed to be carrying heat in order to go to the local McDonald’s, then there are obviously bigger problems in the State which won’t be solved by an individual carrying a weapon.”
If any individual is aware, in advance, that they will have “need” of a firearm for purposes of self-defense, then the most reasonable course of action for that individual would be to avoid the location where that “need” will arise. Generally, civilians who carry concealed deadly weapons do so because it is frequently difficult, if not impossible, to ascertain in advance when such a “need” will occur and, when such a “need” does occur, obtaining a firearm from a secured remote location is frequently inconvenient.
It should be noted also that the carrying of concealed deadly weapons in McDonald’s restaurants in the state of Virginia by individuals possessing a license to carry concealed deadly weapon is already legally permissible, so long as the McDonald’s establishment in question does not serve alcoholic beverages for consumption upon the premises.
Finally, I am entirely confused by your reference to male genitalia, as it is entirely irrelevant to the current subject of discussion. I have observed that advocates of civilian disarmament make entirely non-sequitur references to male genitalia at a rate disproportionate to the populace as a whole. I have begun to wonder if, perhaps, there exists a correlation between advocacy of civilian disarmament and a psychological obsession with male genitalia.
“VA being a traditionally Republican State has apparently not addressed that issue.”
While the state may be traditionally “Republican”, it was a Democratic-controlled state legislature that authorized the recently passed legislation.
It does not matter what your party affiliation is in Virginia, except for Northern Virginia, the thinking there is very regressive. There will soon be a law to allow toddlers to tote at daycare centers.
I have observed that, thus far, no individual expressing opposition to the removal of the relevant restriction has been able to reference data from any of the more than twenty-five states where such a restriction is not extant that justifies their opposition.
“Just think of all the fun there might be when a nut opens fire and gun carrying citizens return fire against each other not knowing who is the bad guy”
With what frequency do such incidents occur in states where the carrying of concealed deadly weapons in establishments where alcohol is served for consumption on the premises is not prohibited?
“So your answer is “It hasn’t happened yet so why worry?””
My posting was an inquiry, not an answer. However, if no statistical data can be referenced supporting the expressed concerns of opponents of the recent legislative act under discussion even though sufficient time has elapsed to allow for the accumulation of such data if those expressed concerns are valid, then it is reasonable to conclude that the expressed concerns are not founded upon a rational basis.
Oh Dimensio, with your lovely, fancy speech there, you don’t impress me much. I can understand though, you sound like such a voice of wisdom, but you lack a certain common sence in this matter. Surely anyone that carries a gun in public, just because they can in a growing population of anger and hatred, justified or not, just having a free for all with shooting people that have not a single thing to do with that gun toting, using it in public, can’t afford their meds, human terror machine, is just fine because it hasn’t happened yet? You want links? You want articles? Have you no experience in life? You, in all your life have never heard of ANYONE that carried a gun in public, shoot at people? In a bar? Anywhere in public? Please. You have not lived long enough in this world to be so bold in your ignorance.
That’s my expressed conclusion. Thank you.
Peace
“I can understand though, you sound like such a voice of wisdom, but you lack a certain common sence in this matter.”
Engaging in personal attacks against me is not logically equivalent to demonstrating that your position is factually justified. Moreover, appealing to “common sense” is an appeal to the “poisoning the well” fallacy; you are preemptively declaring that those who do not share your position lack “common sense”, rather than providing evidence in support of your position.
At present, numerous states do not prohibit the carrying of concealed deadly weapons in establishments where alcohol is served for consumption upon the premises. If expressed concerns of opponents of removing such a restriction in the state of Virginia are justified, then data from states without such a prohibition should be readily available. Claiming that data will be forthcoming, in spite of a demonstrable absence of such data for more than ten years, does not constitute a compelling argument in support of retaining an extant restriction.

@Janet It has to do with small-penis syndrome.
laurieD, male genitalia are not relevant to the referenced legislation. Have you inadvertently misdirected your commentary?
