Guns and Starbucks

.

This stuff makes me ill.

Dale Welch recently walked into a Starbucks in Virginia, handgun strapped to his waist, and ordered a banana Frappuccino with a cinnamon bun. He says the firearm drew a double-take from at least one customer, but not a peep from the baristas.

Welch’s foray into the coffeehouse was part of an effort by some gun owners to exercise and advertise their rights in states that allow people to openly carry firearms.

Even in some “open carry” states, businesses are allowed to ban guns in their stores. And some have, creating political confrontations with gun owners. But Starbucks, the largest chain targeted, has refused to take the bait, saying in a statement this month that it follows state and local laws and has its own safety measures in its stores.

Really, where does one draw the line on Second Amendment rights?  Will it be when every state has an “open carry” policy and 100 million Americans are walking around with Glocks strapped to their belts and assault rifles slung across their backs? Even Wyatt Earp had the basic common sense 130 years ago to understand that leaving your guns at the sheriff’s office before being allowed to down a whiskey at the local saloon was the way to go in Dodge.

Guns in family restaurants, guns in national parks and now one is denied the decency of enjoying a coffee at Starbucks without some jerk with issues of inadequacy walking in flashing his pseudo-dick for all to see.

I find it difficult to feel any compassion for these people when things go wrong…like the guy in this story.

A gun instructor accidently shot a student in the foot Saturday during an NRA class to receive certification to carry a concealed weapon, Orlando police said.

Robert Frauman Jr., 50, was taken to Florida Hospital after instructor Michael Phillips’ firearm discharged about 11:45 a.m., police said.

Phillips, 32, could not be reached for comment. The accident happened at Summit Church, located in a former movie theater near the Fashion Square mall.

The bullet went through a table before it hit Frauman.

This Gun’s For You

.

While we’re on the subject of guns in national parks, let’s add this to the mix…

The Democratically-controlled Virginia Senate has voted to allow concealed weapons permit holders to carry guns in restaurants that serve alcohol, as long as the person carrying the weapon does not drink. The gun bill passed on a 22 to 18 vote, after senators had a vigorous debate about whether or not people might have a reasonable reason to carry guns in restaurants.

The arguments from both sides were interesting to say the least.

Sen. Emmett Hanger (R), who sponsored the measure, said he was doing so on behalf of those who now violate the law that prohibits guns in such establishments rather than leave their weapons in their cars when they go out to eat. He said this was a particular issue for women who carry guns in their purses to defend themselves when they go to, say, Red Lobster. (That was Hanger’s example.)

Others argued guns have no place in eating establishments where alcohol is being served. Though the bill would prohibit a weapons carrier from drinking, the opponents said it would be impossible to tell if the law was being violated if the gun was concealed.

The debate was concluded by Sen. Mary Margaret Whipple (D). “As a final comment, let me just say this. I’ve really never been afraid for my life at the Red Lobster,” she said.

Where the hell is Wyatt Earp when you need him?

Parks ‘n Guns

.

Progress at work…

A new rule in effect Monday will end nearly a century-old ban on firearms in America’s national parks and wildlife refuges. Visitors can bring concealed, loaded guns with them on vacation if they are legal under the laws of the state they are in.

The change passed on a bipartisan vote in May as an amendment to an Obama administration credit card reform bill. It grew out of changes sought in the final months by the Bush administration and gun rights advocates.

Another victory for insanity.

Guns ‘n Beer Revisited

Tennesse Gun and Beer http://mariopiperni.com/

.

Who says there’s no common sense in Tennessee?

A judge on Friday blocked a Tennessee law that allowed people to bring handguns into restaurants and bars.

The law that took effect in July allowed handgun owners with permits to pack their pistols in places serving alcohol, providing the establishments made more than half their profits from food.

Nashville Judge Claudia Bonnyman said the law was “fraught with ambiguity” and ruled in favor of a suit brought by restaurant owners who argued gun owners would not be able to determine if an establishment met the criteria.

“We will have vigilantes shooting up bars all over,” said Randy Rayburn, the owner of three upscale cafes, who led opponents of the law.

Supporters were considering a possible appeal, or new legislation.

Now if they could block the law allowing guns in parks, I might consider visiting Nashville someday.
