Guns and Starbucks

.

This stuff makes me ill.

Dale Welch recently walked into a Starbucks in Virginia, handgun strapped to his waist, and ordered a banana Frappuccino with a cinnamon bun. He says the firearm drew a double-take from at least one customer, but not a peep from the baristas.

Welch’s foray into the coffeehouse was part of an effort by some gun owners to exercise and advertise their rights in states that allow people to openly carry firearms.

Even in some “open carry” states, businesses are allowed to ban guns in their stores. And some have, creating political confrontations with gun owners. But Starbucks, the largest chain targeted, has refused to take the bait, saying in a statement this month that it follows state and local laws and has its own safety measures in its stores.

Really, where does one draw the line on Second Amendment rights?  Will it be when every state has an “open carry” policy and 100 million Americans are walking around with Glocks strapped to their belts and assault rifles slung across their backs? Even Wyatt Earp had the basic common sense 130 years ago to understand that leaving your guns at the sheriff’s office before being allowed to down a whiskey at the local saloon was the way to go in Dodge.

Guns in family restaurants, guns in national parks and now one is denied the decency of enjoying a coffee at Starbucks without some jerk with issues of inadequacy walking in flashing his pseudo-dick for all to see.

I find it difficult to feel any compassion for these people when things go wrong…like the guy in this story.

A gun instructor accidently shot a student in the foot Saturday during an NRA class to receive certification to carry a concealed weapon, Orlando police said.

Robert Frauman Jr., 50, was taken to Florida Hospital after instructor Michael Phillips’ firearm discharged about 11:45 a.m., police said.

Phillips, 32, could not be reached for comment. The accident happened at Summit Church, located in a former movie theater near the Fashion Square mall.

The bullet went through a table before it hit Frauman.

Gun nuts will never be satisfied. They’re using the Obama presidency as an excuse to extend their gun rights and republican politicians are granting their wishes.

  2. azannaphx says:

Well, isn’t that special. It is now legal to carry a gun into Rock Creek Park, which runs from the Maryland suburbs, through the northern DC suburbs to a block from the White House. Virginia, the only proof that you need to carry a gun there is that you have a pulse, which is why there are so many there than no longer have one.

  3. Dimensio says:

The majority of states in the United States permit the openly displayed carrying of defensive firearms, though some do require licensing — granted on a “shall-issue” basis — for individuals who do so. In spite of this, however, few individuals choose to openly carry firearms, and even fewer openly carry rifles on a daily basis. As assault rifles are both federally restricted and prohibitively expensive for the average civilian, it is unlikely that the open carrying of any assault rifle will be a common observation in any state. I have observed that the majority of individuals who choose to carry a defensive firearm do so in a concealed fashion, as the carrying of concealed deadly weapons is also permitted in the majority of states in the United States; typically this is permitted only if the carrier has been granted a permit to do so, however the majority of states that grant such permits do so on a “shall issue” basis.

Curiously, thus far, no civilian disarmament advocate has yet provided justification for the restriction of this liberty in spite of their continued advocacy of such restriction. Frequently, such civilian disarmament advocates predict dire consequences resulting from a lack of such restriction, yet the specific consequences predicted have, thus far, entirely failed to manifest in reality.

” It is now legal to carry a gun into Rock Creek Park, which runs from the Maryland suburbs, through the northern DC suburbs to a block from the White House.”

I was unaware that the carrying of firearms was unrestricted both in the state of Maryland and in the District of Columbia.

  4. azannaphx says:

Dimensio, Rock Creek Park, unlike many parks, which are run by states, cities and counties,is a National Park and run by the U.S. National Park Service, so it is included in the parks that one can now carry a fire arm into. The carrying of firearms in Maryland and the District of Columbia have their own laws, that will not govern Rock Creek Park.

  5. Dimensio says:

Your assertion is factually incorrect, azannaphx. Recent alteration to policy regarding the possession of firearms within National Parks merely permits individuals who are legally in possession of a firearm within the state in which a park is located to be in possession of a firearm within that park. Thus, if no possible means exists for a civilian to legally possess a firearm within the state of Maryland or within the District of Columbia, that civilian may not possess a firearm when in any national park land located within the State of Maryland or within the District of Columbia. The local laws of Maryland and of the District of Coulmbia will now apply also to National Park lands located within those locales, where previously an extant federal policy overrode any policy that a state may have attempted to enact.
