On ClimateGate and “Arseholes”…

Here’s a lovely little debate between a scientist and an idiot skeptic over climate change.  The deniers really believe they have something with these stolen emails.  Funny.  Make sure you catch what Watson says right at the end of this clip. He sums it up quite nicely.

ClimateGate

Pollution / Climate chage / http://mariopiperni.com/

.

This piece in HuffPo on ClimateGate perfectly sums up my views on this ridiculous attempt by the right to obfuscate the global warming debate.

A few weeks ago, hackers broke into the emails of one of the Climate Research Unit of The University of East Anglia, and climate skeptics have been having a field day making mountains out of molehills about what the emails contain. The verdict on global warming is in — it’s caused by humans and it is happening and nothing in the emails remotely challenges that. However, with the internet abuzz about what has been labeled “ClimateGate,” we thought we should set the record straight about the rumors, lies and insinuations about what the emails actually contain — and what they “prove” about climate change. “ClimateGate” itself is a misnomer, the nickname should be “SwiftHack” for the way people with political agendas have “swiftboated” the global warming reality. As world attention turns to the climate conference in Copenhagen this December, this email hack acts as a distraction from the huge task at hand of getting world leaders to commit to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As professor Richard Somerville says, “We’re facing an effort by special interests who are trying to confuse the public.”

The article goes on to point out the most glaring lies about the supposed “global warming hoax”. For a comprehensive and intelligent dissecting of ClimaGate, see SwiftHack.

The bottom line is that science does not give a damn about deniers or liars or people with hidden agendas. It marches on regardless of what is being said or written.  As it should.

Battling Climate Change Deniers

jackass http://mariopiperni.com/

.

How disappointing to see someone of the intellect of conservative writer George Will, write nonsense on the topic of climate change.

Although the political and media drumbeat of alarm is incessant, a Pew poll shows that only 57 percent of Americans think there is solid evidence of global warming, down 20 points in three years. Gallup shows that only 1 percent of Americans rank the environment as their biggest worry. Two reasons are:

They are worried about their wages, which will not be improved by clobbering a weak economy with the costs of a cap-and-trade carbon-reduction regime. And climate doomsayers are learning the wages of crying “Wolf!”

In 2005, global warming worriers warned, as they tend to do after all adverse or anomalous environmental events, that Hurricane Katrina was caused by global warming and foreshadowed an increase in the number and destructiveness of hurricanes. As this year’s Atlantic hurricane season ends, only three hurricanes have formed — half the average of the past 50 years — and none has hit the United States.

So?  Polls also indicate that only 40% of Americans firmly believe in the the theory of evolution.  Does that make it any less true?  The only thing that the Pew poll shows us is that conservatives and the oil industry have done a good job of muddying the waters on the topic of climate change. Add to this the fact that the media has a fixation on giving equal weight to all arguments on important issues. This gives credence to even the most ridiculous claims laid out by the right wing propaganda machine.

There is no debate within the true scientific community on what the empirical data points to. If individuals choose to believe a handful of whackjobs and industry conmen over the world’s leading scientists, let them.  It’s a shame though that people like Will choose to be on the side of misinformation.

If you’re interested, MediaMatters rips apart Will’s article. And how do they do that?

With facts ma’am…just the facts.  And truth.

Jim Inhofe: Beyond Stupid

Jim Inhofe http://mariopiperni.com/

.

There are no shortage of Republican imbeciles.  Feeble-minded dolts are attracted to the Republican party like flies to…you know what.   If I had to choose the worst of the lot, it would have to be Michele Bachmann. But running a close second would be Oklahoma senator and global warming denier Jim Inhofe. This guy has a record of stupidity dating back two decades.  The President’s determination to get climate change legislation passed has Inhofe’s last three remaining brain cells in a tizzy.

Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) has announced to National Review that he will be personally leading a “truth squad” to the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference, where he will make it clear to international leaders not to believe that the United States will pass legislation to deal with the issue.

Truth squad? Here are a few quotes from the truth teller.

“With all of the hysteria, all of the fear, all of the phony science, could it be that man-made global warming is the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people?”

“It [environmentalist movement]  kind of reminds… I could use the Third Reich, the Big Lie… You say something over and over and over and over again, and people will believe it, and that’s their [the environmentalists'] strategy.”

I wouldn’t even know where to begin…

Here’s Inhofe on the Abu Ghraib scandal.

As a member of the Armed Services Committee, he was among the panelists questioning witnesses about the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse. There he made news by claiming he was “outraged by the outrage” over the revelations of abuse, suggesting that shock at the crimes was more offensive than the crimes themselves. In 2006, Inhofe was one of only nine senators to vote against the Detainee Treatment Act of 2005 which prohibits “cruel, inhuman or degrading” treatment of individuals in U.S. Government custody.

And that, folks, is Jim Inhofe – Supreme Leader of The Truth Squad and proud Republican Senator.  Sad.

When stupid is just stupid

Why do conservatives hate science?

“…scientists are not saying that carbon dioxide is inherently harmful. Rather, they point to the danger posed to the atmosphere by excessive discharges of C02, as the Natural Resources Defense Council has noted”

[A] pollutant is a substance that causes harm when present in excessive amounts. CO2 has been in the atmosphere since life on earth began, and in the right amounts CO2 is important for making the earth hospitable for continued life. But when too much CO2 is put into the atmosphere, it becomes harmful. We have long recognized this fact for other pollutants. For example, phosphorus is a valuable fertilizer, but in excess, it can kill lakes and streams by clogging them with a blanket of algae.”

Not all that complicted, is it?
