Leahy Proposes Investigating Bush Administration

Bush, Cheney and Barney - Criminals at large

Bush, Cheney and Barney - We can dream, can't we?

Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy has proposed setting up a truth and reconciliation commission to investigate potential crimes of the Bush administration.

Leahy said, “I think the Senate and the Congress as a whole has an oversight responsibility that has to be carried out here anyway. Now it is much easier with the cooperation of the administration. A lot of things with the subpoenas I issued the past few years, we got a lot of information but a lot of it was held back.

For his part, President Obama has shown a reluctance to give his blessing to the proposal.  While not offering an opinion he did say his preference would be to look forward and not backwards.

I don’t think the Leahy proposal will go anywhere but a case can be made that Congress does have Constitutional authority to investigate.  For many, in both the US and the world, an investigation into the Bush administration’s crimes would be a form of closure.

One can only imagine the uproar Republicans would raise if Congress did go ahead with an investigation.  As we all know, Reps are more concerned with BJs in the oval office than actual war crimes.

Comments

  1. bigdaddy says:

I find this comment and this image offensive. You have stooped to a surprisingly low level.

You AND Leahy should be careful what you wish for and which Pandora’s Boxes you choose to open.

Honestly, I find the image here disgusting. Surely you can put your talent to better use.

  2. mario says:

    OK, I apologize.

There was no reason to put little Barney in prison garb. Sorry.

  3. bigdaddy says:

Still repulsive and your flip attitude doesn’t necessarily make it better. It’s an insult to the majority of Americans save the few nut cases that think as you and Leahy.

Why not post an intelligent comment as to the precedent such action would present and the damage it would do our country now and in the future?

Let’s say for instance, President Obama’s Stimulus and Bailout Plans fail miserably, bankrupts our country, and the Republican’s come back into power in 2012. The precedence would have been set that he could conceivably be investigated for Fiduciary Recklessness and Negligence and charged if found guilty.

Is that the ball Radical, Mentally Deficient Liberals want to set rolling?

  4. mario says:

Your comments are quite ironic coming from a guy who is a fan of a political party which wanted to remove a sitting president for lying about having sex with an intern. Were you ok with that circus show in the 90s when conservatives were foaming at the mouth over Clinton? What harm would you think that did to your county?

We now have a former president and an administration which invaded a country on the basis of lies. And spare me the “intelligence was faulty” BS. Read ‘Hubris’ or ‘The One Percent Doctrine’ or any of another 20 books which outline the deceit and lies used in the selling of the Iraq war. Intelligence agencies did try to tell the White House that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 and that there were no WMDs. Cheney did not want to hear any of it. The decision had been made on September 11 that Iraq was going to be a target. And the consequence is the death of tens of thousands of innocent people to say nothing of the recruitment of thousands of terrorists who now had a real reason to hate America.

So if an image of your pathetic hero in prison clothes upsets you, I really don’t give a damn.

  5. Lara... says:

    Good post Mario.
In a perfect world Bush should be made to answer for his crimes ,but, then again, you have to look at the entire government. I’m more worried about Congress these days. Fat greedy bastards with big fat wallets courtesy of lobbyists.
While Bush retires to a luxurious Texan home, his family and friends comforting him as he ages, think of all the American soldiers that have died fighting a war based on lies and deceit, think of the ten of thousands of innocent Iraqis that have died in vain, never to have the golden years Bush envisions.
I personally agree with Obama, look into the future, but Bush and his administration have done this country a great injustice and it does not seem fair that the powerful former president is allowed his calm life after bringing the United States and all her people on the brink of another great depression, a country filled with newly filled gravesites and a foreign country in shambles and mourning.

    May God be his judge.

  6. mario says:

You’re quite right Lara, but Bush apologists will never understand it. They are completely blind to the crimes of the last 8 years and how the Bush administration used the fear and anger which emerged from the tragedy of 9/11 as a means to force a neocon agenda on a country…and the world.

Guys like bigdaddy are not willing to hear the truth…not now, not ever. They are locked into a warped ideology which truly makes them deaf, dumb and blind.

  7. darkArtist says:

Bang! You nailed that one Mario! Nice work.

How I’d love to see that bum behind bars.

  8. bigdaddy says:

First off…No. I think Clinton got a raw deal. I think the actions of ALL our elected officials at that time made our country look foolish.

I challenged you to speak to the precedent you endorse. You come back with more whining about Bush this. Bush that. From what I have learned of your style of discourse, that would mean you have been proven wrong so you simply ignore that.

You know. You people are just plain stupid. You quote all this liberal tripe as valid source. You are shamelessly partisan while pointing fingers at everyone else and accusing them of being partisan.

I’ve never claimed Bush as a hero. You are so caught up in your ignorant hatred of him that if someone doesn’t share it, then they are somehow flawed. I’ve only got one hero Mario. And he is dead.

I just think you discredit yourself and the rest of deranged liberal lunatics when you post junk like this. You are a Canadian. I’m not sure you or your little country are relevant or that any one cares what you think. You have a lot of cajones to accuse someone else of being locked into any sort of ideology when you are ignorantly loyal and adherent to the lunatic liberal fringe.

Yes my friend. Your pathetic depiction of the former President of the United States is an insult to anyone with a brain or a sense of decorum.

You are irrelevant. Your opinions are irrelevant. You and your ilk need to move on. follow the advice of your Saviour and look forward.

Make Bush answer for his crimes? How ignorant can one be. What crimes would that be? What crime has he been accused of? Only the most radical, far out, wild eyed, drooling liberal idiot would claim this President or ANY President should be held criminally liable for trying to keep Americans safe from further attack.

If Obamasiah’s weakening the effort to protect us from further attack should result in an attack in the future, should we try him for a crime? Of course not. In that foggy world of liberal dementia, that would be different!!

If one of the Prisoner’s he is setting free in Gitmo commandeers a plane in the future and flies it into another building, should we hold Obamasiah criminally responsible for his naiveté and inexperience? Of course not. That would be different.

So. Come back with all your whining about how I personally attacked you and all the crying you want. I don’t care.

Yes Mario. Your image is insulting. To an entire country. And to employ YOUR na-na-na-boo-boo argument. I really don’t give a damn if you give a damn or not. You are far too pompous and arrogant to understand when you have exceeded your limitations.

Good luck with your One Trick Pony Political Show.

  9. trudeau-ite says:

“I find this comment and this image offensive. You have stooped to a surprisingly low level.”

Why should you take personal offense to this? Why should you give a damn about a man who has only ever had self-serving interests and could care less about the welfare of the American nation? Please illuminate me on how much personal sacrifice Bush has made for the betterment of America? All he cared about was making oil deals with the Saudi’s and protecting their interests once all hell broke loss on 9/11.

Please tell me you not really personally offended if people actually speak out about Bush’s narcissistic actions in the past eight years.

  10. mario says:

I’ll tell you why, trudeau. Bigdaddy types equate the image of Bush with their country. What they are incapable of understanding is that Bush was an aberration. He was a man who had no right being president of the local PTA forget an entire nation.

And, bigdaddy, there have been a number of books which have knocked the presidency of George Bush written by conservatives. You can start with the one written by Bush’s first Secretary of the Treasury, Paul O’Neill. He wrote of the very FIRST cabinet meeting he attended in January 2001 where the topic of discussion was how to take down Saddam Hussein. This was 9 months before 9/11.

You just don’t want to know the truth.

  11. trudeau-ite says:

Well I say, pick your battles. If you have a Republican that is a true man of honor that really cares about his nation, then I’m all for it. But if you have someone like Bush representing your party and you still steadfastly believe he was doing you and your country a service, then you really are a detriment to your country’s future.

  12. darkArtist says:

    To bigdaddy,

You have the audacity to call this post disgusting and insulting and you turn around and insult a country which is our closest and dearest neighbor? To what end?

As a fellow American, I find your attitude disgusting and find you personally to be an embarrassment to our country. It is exactly because of Americans like you that our image is so tattered across the globe.

Should you ever take the time to step back and have a good look at yourself, you’d find a loud no-nothing bumpkin who has his priorities quite confused. What gives you entitlement to voice your opinions but find a need to shout down others with insults and make disparaging remarks about their country of birth?

I have not read a single word in these posts where anyone has put down or mocked the United States. Do your insecurities run so deep that criticism of a former president, as invalid as you might think it is, gets you rattled to the point of mad rage? Reread your words. They are those of a sad little man who resorts to knee-jerk responses and baseless ad-hominem attacks.

You are quite the disgrace, sir.

  13. mario says:

What is all the fuss about? I put a prison uniform on a dog and people go nuts?

Everyone take a deep breath and repeat after me…it’s only a dog, it’s only a dog, it’s only a dog, it’s only

  14. bigdaddy says:

No Dark Eunuch. The disgrace is Americans like you that relish in the desecration of America. I’m not caught up in any sort of reverence for President Bush. I am resentful of people in other countries displaying such blatant disrespect for the President of the United States, whoever he or she may be.

You can read over my posts and I don’t think you will find one where I extol the virtues of President Bush. I just simply do not blame him for all the ills of the world and I think people like Mario that do are made ignorant by their hatred, their insecurities and their impotence. (See Bush Derangement Syndrome)

The disgrace is the hypocrisy of people who just a few short months ago were howling in protest because someone hung a ghost for a Halloween decoration with President Obama’s face on it. But will visit any insult they choose on President Bush and that’s okay.

The disgrace is people that will upbraid me because I won’t agree with them that President Bush is the Anti-Christ and accuse me of hero worship and all that insipid junk. But will post pictures of Obama on Mt. Rushmore. Obama on a Stamp. Obama with Lincoln over his shoulder. Catch my drift? Who is being unreasonable here? Who is being hypocritical?

How do you figure I insulted Canada? Because I referred to it as little? Okay. I take that back as I think their land mass makes them one of the larger countries in the world. But are they irrelevant on the world scene? I think one could make the argument that they are. At least at this time in history. That’s not an insult. That is my opinion of the effect Canada has on the World Stage at this point in time.

So, no Dark Eunuch. I feel that whether it’s Hugo Chavez, Vladamir Putin, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad or Mario, I resent overly disrespectful behavior and commentary directed at the President of the United States. You can criticize the actions. You can criticize the policies. But why stoop to such repugnant disrespect of the man in general?

I think by now everyone understands that Mario has an unnatural hatred for any and everything Bush. But why go to such great lengths to exhibit disrespect?

So yes. I think any American with any sense of decency at all should be offended by this repugnant and disrespectful image.

    “Liberalism is a mental disorder.”

  15. mario says:

There’s an irrational side to your personality, bigdaddy, which I’d be concerned about if I was you. A few comments on your response to darkArtist.

    - I believe that George Bush and Dick Cheney should be tried for the crimes they committed. That is my opinion (and the opinion of probably a 100 million Americans). Am I entitled to that opinion? Does the fact that he was president of the U.S. absolve him from his acts in office?

    - Your irrational suggestion that my criticism of Bush is somehow disrespectful of the US is…well, it’s just plain stupid. Nancy Pelosi who you have mocked and criticized numerous times is a sitting member of Congress. Should I view this as a disrespectful act toward your country? Your logic is warped.

    - I have no need to defend Canada to someone who is so obviously ignorant about my country. I will just say that you might want to tell the parents or spouses of the 100 Canadian soldiers who have been killed in Afghanistan that Canada is irrelevant.

    - I don’t criticize you because you disagree with me. This has been your mantra time and time again. The irony is that what you accuse me of doing is EXACTLY what you do! This post is the perfect example. I put up a post expressing my opinion and you came back with a venomous pile of crap calling me ignorant and mocking Canada. And you think you have righteousness on your side? Sick.

    - Are you so blind to your ways? What is wrong with you? I’ve debated many conservatives and I have never seen anyone so unaware of their own irrational, twisted logic.

Anyway, don’t take my word for it. Just read the comments on this page.

Final piece of advice for you. Learn to express your opinion on the issues in a manner which does not turn it into a personal attack on me or any other commenter. If you feel that your hero should not be jailed, fine…just express your reasons for feeling that way and why you think I’m wrong. Having every thread turn into a series of personal attacks is stupid and this is the last time I will participate in such a debate.

Consider your hand slapped. Now go be a good boy.

  16. bigdaddy says:

“If you feel that your hero should not be jailed, fine…”

And that’s part of the problem. Because I don’t hate and disrespect him as you do, that some how translates to hero worship.

“I believe that George Bush and Dick Cheney should be tried for the crimes they committed.”

I’m sorry, I was unaware they had been charged of crimes. So either you are wrong or I missed the part where they were charged with a crime.

“Your irrational suggestion that my criticism of Bush is somehow disrespectful of the US is…well, it’s just plain stupid.”

No. Try to stick to reality. I said the image you created was disrespectful. Still say it is. And to quote someone much smarter than myself, “I don’t particularly give a damn what you think.”

“I will just say that you might want to tell the parents or spouses of the 100 Canadian soldiers who have been killed in Afghanistan that Canada is irrelevant.”

I said nothing about the contribution of Canadian Soldiers as being irrelevant. That’s a pretty tacky effort on your part. But I do say that Canada has little influence on the World Stage and Global Politics at this point in time.

“I don’t criticize you because you disagree with me. This has been your mantra time and time again.”

Now for that one, I’ll just admonish you and anyone else interested to simply read back over the many posts. According to you, I am incapable of thought or opinion outside of FOXX News and Conservative Pundits. I’m narrow minded. Parroting. Irrational. Twisted. Need I go on??

“Final piece of advice for you. Learn to express your opinion on the issues in a manner which does not turn it into a personal attack on me or any other commenter.”

I take issue with your Politics and voice my feelings about that. You only consider it a personal attack if someone else is doing the commentary. If it’s you blathering on about FOXX this or Hero that, narrow minded this, just too many to list here, then that’s intelligent and insightful discourse. If it’s someone questioning your Liberal Ideology, then all of a sudden it becomes a personal attack.

No. I think you are a perfect example of the homily, “The bit dog always howls the loudest.” When someone makes a point with you that bucks the Liberal Mantel you have self-righteously hung around your shoulders, you respond by belittling them with FOXX News, Liberal Pundits, Parrots, you know, your usual fare.

So please, don’t cry foul with me about any personal comments. Differentiate. I’m sure you’re a fine fellow. Your Politics suck.

  17. mario says:

    Your Politics suck.”

    OK.

  18. trudeau-ite says:

“I am resentful of people in other countries displaying such blatant disrespect for the President of the United States, whoever he or she may be.”

I can assure you bigdaddy, that I have more respect for the President of the United States that you could ever imagine.

Before making blatant comments that could not possibly be founded in any sort of logic, simply because you personally have no idea whom you are talking with, you may want to rethink your strategy before entrenching yourself in your staunch believe that you are the most patriotic person in this forum. Being a supporter of the President of the United States means you support THE President and not just the President you feel is worthy.

  19. darkArtist says:

I had no respect for President Bush in the same way I had no respect for Saddam Hussein. There is a difference in respecting the office of the President and respecting the man who holds that office. Neither Bush nor Saddam deserved anyone’s respect.

I voted for George W. Bush in 2000 and while I had my doubts about the man, I was excited about his message of seeking unity between democrats and republicans and making the welfare of the county his priority.

His first term ended up being the exact opposite. He sowed the seeds of dissension and created a greater divide in the country than I had ever witnessed before. He was the ultimate failure and I could not wait to cast my vote against him in 2004.

President Bush lied and smirked his way through 8 years in office and the damage he has done will take years to rectify. In summary, the office of the president will always have my respect. For the man who occupies that office, he must earn my respect.

  20. bigdaddy says:

    George Bush and Saddam Hussein?

That is to ridiculous to even respond to. The below site should also offer a thought on your comeback of the deaths caused by the Iraqi War.

    http://wais.stanford.edu/Iraq/iraq_deathsundersaddamhussein42503.html

Let me ask…..did you meet Mario in your “Bush Derangement Syndrome Management” classes? Have you guys made any progress in managing and controlling this flaw in your characters?

  21. bigdaddy says:

I’m sorry. I missed the comment where I claimed to be the most Patriotic Person on this forum. And I also missed the ones where I have displayed disrespect to THE President that even begins to approach that exhibited toward Mr. Bush.

  22. trudeau-ite says:

Au contraire, your comment was not explicitly stated but the fact that “you resent people that have disrespect for the President”, implicitly means you have a greater respect. Who are you to think you’re so superior?
This is an open discussion and the last time I checked, we didn’t wake up in a Taliban state. All are free to express their opinions without personal recrimination.

  23. bigdaddy says:

The main issue here (at least to me) is the point I brought up in my 2nd post to this garbage that no one has answered as yet. Speaks to precedence. Do we want to set a precedent where every new administration investigates the previous administration? When I finally agree with President Obama, I find you guys on the other side.

An here is information on “Leahy Then” vs “Leahy Now”. What a hypocrite!

    http://patterico.com/2007/03/21/pat-leahy-on-executive-privilege-from-the-clinton-years/

  24. bigdaddy says:

I wonder if Leahy’s obsession with investigating Cheney and Bush could have anything to do with Cheney telling him to “F” off a few years back?
