In case you missed the story, Pope Benedict made headlines this week by doing what it is popes do best – putting the irrational fear of God into his followers.
The pope made some of his strongest comments against gay marriage in a new year address to the diplomatic corps accredited to the Vatican in which he touched on some economic and social issues facing the world today.
He told diplomats from nearly 180 countries that the education of children needed proper “settings” and that “pride of place goes to the family, based on the marriage of a man and a woman.”
“This is not a simple social convention, but rather the fundamental cell of every society. Consequently, policies which undermine the family threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself,” he said.
Of all the things which could actually bring an end to human existence (e.g. nuclear war, global warming, a Rick Perry presidency), the Pope picks on same-sex marriage. It’s right out of a Rick Santorum stump speech. Scary stuff but how exactly would same-sex marriage end life as we know it?
Jimmy Kimmel to the rescue.
I find it pathetically ironic that one could always count on religion to spread a little more hate and bigotry around. How nice if religion truly was a place where tolerance and love found refuge, safe from a world where intolerance and hate is gaining ground. But, not so. As demonstrated by Pope Benedict’s words, religion has been and still is a major player in sowing the seeds of bigotry.
If it is conceivable that every man and woman on earth will go to the other side( gay partners),then I could foresee the multiplication of earthlings being jeopardized in the distant future.
But men and women adore making love naturally and I find that this urge will never disappear. I find it impossible that humainty will ever cease as much as I don’t believe that the Pope will marry the pedophile priests he so earnestly tried to protect.
I do believe that he doth protest too much and being human,he is destined to disappear in the near future.
Good article, thanks for the link as well. My friend brought my attention to the Pope’s speech and it’s angered me.
I think it’s dangerous to think that he is irrelevant and will disappear as that kind of thinking gives us comfort in being apathetic about this blatant hate speech; and thus, we are tolerating it.
Regardless of your sexual orientation everyone should be concerned by this type of talk, especially when it is coming from a world leader.
We can’t move forward as a race when we are too busy telling one another how we should be and we can’t see the bigger issues that are actually effecting us when we are fighting over who is right and who is wrong. The real threat to humanity lies in this finger pointing and this hating.
There’s absolutely no dignity in hate.
I love the sound of irrelevancy in the morning. Sounds archaic.
Not as irrelevant as we would wish. There are 1.2 billion Catholics in the world and the pope is their supreme leader.
I’ll have to ask my mostly lapsed Catholic friends if they view the pope as their supreme leader.

Would that it were only the Pope who is passing this noxious gas in the universal atmosphere.

raping children isn’t real good for the future of the world, either.
