The 14th Amendment is a mighty sword, and U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker used it Wednesday to slice and shred all the specious arguments — and I mean all of them — that are used to deny full marriage rights to gay and lesbian Americans. Bigotry has suffered a grievous blow.
Walker found that California’s Proposition 8, which sought to ban gay marriage in the state, violated not one but two of the amendment’s clauses — those guaranteeing due process and equal protection under the law. By deciding the case on constitutional grounds, and by crafting such a detailed and comprehensive ruling, Walker all but guaranteed that the issue will reach the Supreme Court.
[...]
One decision by one federal judge does not settle the controversy over gay marriage. But Walker’s 136-page ruling lays down a formidable marker because it changes the terms of the debate. He frames gay marriage as a question involving the most basic, cherished rights that the Constitution guarantees to all Americans. In doing so, he raises the stakes sky-high: Are gays and lesbians full citizens of this country, or are they something less?
Walker stepped up to the plate and swung for the fences. He hit a home run.
It is only a matter of time before full rights are granted to the gay and lesbian community but if the Civil Rights movement proved anything, it’s that the battle against bigotry will be both long and arduous. Intolerance and hate are formidable foes which understand no logic and while laws can be enacted which sets justice on the right course, acceptance is a different matter. It requires a set of forces which have nothing to do with constitutional rights and everything to do with understanding, intelligence and education. That part of the equation will most likely be with us for a long time to come.

The chairman of the House Armed Services Committee said Tuesday that he thought the military should keep its ban on openly gay service members in part because he did not want to open a national discussion about homosexuality. The chairman, Representative Ike Skelton, a conservative Missouri Democrat, said he thought the debate in Congress over the proposed repeal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy might force families to explain homosexuality to their children. “What do mommies and daddies say to their 7-year-old child?”
Sure, Ike. When DADT is repealed there will no doubt be millions of 7-year-olds tuned in to Fox and MSNBC or reading the New York Times shaking their heads and asking, “Mommy, what’s a homofexual?” Please. And should they ask, try telling them the damn truth. Tell them that there are all kinds of people in this world and that’s what makes it so special.
But the real truth, Ike, is that you’re nothing more than a pathetic homophobe lacking the moral and intellectual capability to understand that not everyone is like you, nor should they be. You’re less concerned about 7-year-olds than you are about protecting your right to be a narrow-minded bigot.
I have a question for you, Ike; what should mommies and daddies say to their 7-year-old child when they ask why intolerant ignoramuses like you exist in this world? That I think would be a much more important question.

Here’s the type of conversation you get when you place a homophobic politician in the same room with the homophobic president of a homophobic organization that preaches intolerance under the guise of love and family values.
If homosexuals want to avoid discrimination they should be more discreet about being homosexual, U.S. Rep. Steve King, R-Kiron, said Tuesday on the radio program of Family Research Council President Tony Perkins.
King and Perkins were discussing the federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), a bill that prohibits workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Perkins expressed fear that “someone could come in dressed one day as a woman or a man, the next day they come in dressed as the opposite sex” and an employer would be “helpless to do anything about it.”
King…
“If people wear their sexuality on their sleeve, then they want to bring litigation against someone that they would point their finger at and say “you discriminate,” it is an entrapment that is legalized by the ENDA Act, it appears to, and its a violation of the individual rights of employers to, at their own discretion, decide who they want to hire and who they want to fire. We don’t need more federal mandates. And we surely don’t need a political statement, and that’s what this is, too. This is the homosexual activist lobby taking it out on the rest of society. They are demanding affirmation for their lifestyle. That’s at the bottom of this.”
Only one who is of the belief that homosexuality is a perversion which requires secrecy and should be kept hidden from the good people of society could make these type of statements. For what other other possible reason should gays and lesbians be any more discreet than heterosexuals in proclaiming who they are?
The argument that keeping silent on one’s non-straight sexual orientation is a way to avoid discrimination is nonsense. If not, then we could easily extrapolate the same thinking to religion. Jews and Muslims who kept their religion secret from others would never have to worry about facing discrimination from religious bigots Christians . We might want to apply the same idea to race. Perhaps if African-Americans wore ski masks, long-sleeved shirts and gloves in public they would not offend the gentle sensibilities of racists white folk and thus never face their scorn.
If you have issues with gays and lesbians being who they are then may I suggest that it is you who has the problem. Seek counseling. There are cures for irrational fear, hate and bigotry I hope.

PHILADELPHIA — The old tactic of dragging out an opponent’s sexual skeletons for political gain is being turned on its head in the City of Brotherly Love.
In a left-leaning district anchored by a roughly three-square-block area known as the Gayborhood, where gay pride rainbows grace even the street signs, a state representative accuses her foe of pretending to be bisexual to win votes.
Rep. Babette Josephs says Gregg Kravitz, her challenger in the May 18 Democratic primary for the 182nd District House seat, told her he was gay, then appeared at a campaign event with a woman who introduced herself as his girlfriend.
“I outed him as a straight person, and now he goes around telling people, quote, ‘I swing both ways,’” Josephs told supporters April 15 in recorded comments at a fundraiser at a downtown pub. “That’s quite a respectful way to talk about sexuality.”
So is it now a plus to be gay, lesbian or bisexual when running for office?
A spokesman for the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund…
“There are only a few places where being openly LGBT might be a net plus: in this district in Philadelphia, Dupont Circle in Washington, the Castro in San Francisco,” he said. “In the vast majority of places — and vast majority is an understatement — it’s still a hurdle.”
“I outed him as a straight person.” There’s my quote of the week right there.

President Obama on Thursday signed a memorandum requiring hospitals to allow gays and lesbians to have non-family visitors and to grant their partners medical power of attorney.
The president ordered the Department of Health and Human Services to prohibit discrimination in hospital visitation. The memo is scheduled to be made public Friday morning, according to an administration official and another source familiar with the White House decision.
An official said the new rule will affect any hospital that receives Medicare or Medicaid funding.
The decision injects the president squarely into the debate over gay marriage by attempting to end the common practice by many hospitals of insisting that only family members by blood or marriage be allowed to visit patients.
A presidential order was required to allow what should have been a decision of common decency, empathy and understanding on the part of hospitals. How sick is that? No doubt the homophobes will protest and tell us how god would want gays and lesbians to die alone in a hospital bed. Watch.
