There is no exact way of determining how many gays, lesbians and bisexuals serving in the U.S. military since there is no actual tracking of the numbers…but here is one estimate.
An estimated 66,000 gay, lesbian and bisexual people are serving in the U.S. military, roughly 2 percent of all military personnel, according to a report released Tuesday by a gay rights policy center. The figures suggest a slight increase in the number of gays, lesbians and bisexuals in the military, and they provide opponents of the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy with fresh data as they lobby the Obama administration for its repeal.
Gays, lesbians and bisexuals account for about 13,000 active duty service members, equal to less than 1 percent currently deployed, the report estimated. About 53,000 others serve in the National Guard and reserves, equaling about 3.4 percent.
While one may try to make the argument that Obama has yet to act on his campaign promise to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell because of the rocky political climate, it is a dubious one at best. The longer he waits, the more difficult it will be to end this homophobic practice. Conservatives have been successful in poisoning the debate on every issue confronting the nation and they will do the same with this one regardless of when the President decides to act. There will never be the perfect time to do the right thing.
Obama made a promise. It is time he kept it.

Obama can do nothing to control the Homosexuality in American military. I think the soldiers are alone in Iraq and Afghanistan. They cannot control their sexual urge as they are living without their girl friends and wives.
Adam, I respectfully submit that this has nothing to do with horny heterosexuals in a rough temporary place. It has to do, in my mind, with the need for our institutions to deal fairly with the rights of all citizens in this country. Yes, President can by edict change the “Do not Ask” Laws, but I think that it needs to be done in another way. The military itself needs to step up fix this because they need to offer an environment of acceptance to get it truly internalized into the military. Right now, they have two wars on their hands, and they would definitely be better off if they had not fired their Gay Arabic Linguists.
Slightly OT, but I think that we are tanking the Obama administration by expecting everything to be fixed RIGHT NOW. There has been great progress, but his administration hardly gets mentioned in a positive way. The media says, yeah, that is done, but I need to whine about these other 10 things, so I can not stop, be still and savor the progress.
All I can say at this point, if the media had scrutinized “W” as much as they have Obama, perhaps we would not have been at war in Iraq or have this financial chaos that we have tried to fix this past year. Therefore, the topic of “Don’t Ask, Don’t tell” would be further up the list of priorities.
The reason the media is scrutinizing Pres. Obama is because he represents a clear and present danger to the people who really own this country – greedy, wealthy corporations. Plain and simple, time to learn the fact. W was the butter for their bread. Obama represents famine to them and that is why there are hatchet jobs aimed at him from all sides.
Frances, it also gives a good look at why the major TV and Newspaper outlets should not be owned by these mega-corporations. What better position could you be in to control what gets reported and how it is spun.
Just got the email that Obama will address the DADT issue. I thought he said in the beginning of his term that he did not want to change it as an edict, because another president could just sign his name and change it back. He wanted Congress to overturn what THEY had imposed.
I agree totally with @Azannaphx and @Frances. We now call the Supreme Court – the “Supreme Corp” and the propoganda is getting heavy.
