Faces of the Day – Mother and Child

My daughter, Cristina, with Leena, 8 weeks young.

Woke up at 4 in the morning with lower back pain and spent the following 3 hours trying to find a position that would relieve the discomfort. None was found so I climbed out of bed, made some coffee, popped a couple of Advil (nothing), and spent an hour on my back pressed against the hardwood floor watching the Olympics. It helped a bit but the pain is still there.

I have an unsettling feeling that it is going to be a long, unfocused day…although, looking at the pic below helps a whole lot more than those Advil did.

  1. Two beauties… You’re double-blessed.

  2. Charlie Sommers says:

    Both the girls are beautiful!

As for the back pain I’ve been there and the best relief was a heating pad and a visit to a chiropractor. I wish you success in finding relief.

  3. Cheryl says:

    Both are lovely ladies.

    Second Charlie on the chiropractor.

  4. Thank you. They’re both cuties, I agree.

As for the back pain, if it lingers, I’ve been thinking about seeing a chiropractor. Lower back pain has plagued me for the last 20 years. It usually disappears within a couple of days but there have been periods where it’s hung around for a week or longer. I’ve heard conflicting reports on the benefits of chiropractic treatment but the good stuff seems to outweigh the bad.

My family physician, for one, despises chiropractors and equates the practice with that of faith healing. My research and the experience of friends and family tells me otherwise. It might be time to find out first hand.

Congratulations to a fellow grandfather– there’s nothing that can touch your heart like your babies’ babies.

  6. Carol says:

Ah…what a wonderful way to start the week!
    Nothing like a Mother’s love….except maybe a Grandpa’s.

I haven’t been to a chiro either but there’s one people rave about in town.

My suggestion, having been plagued early on when I decided to own a horse, is to find a good YOGA instructor and take their gentle advice and exercises to heart.

She is way too adorable. She actually looks as if she is flirting with the camera already.

  8. Charlie Sommers says:

Mario, Years ago I suffered, and I mean suffered, with a sore neck for most of a summer. It was so painful that if I wanted to change positions in bed I had to put my hands under my head and lift it at the same time I turned over. I spent a moderate amount of cash with my family physician who recommended muscle relaxers, analgesics, and anti inflammatories none of which did any good at all. On the advice of a friend I visited a chiropractor who gave me “INSTANT” relief on the first visit. I sing the praises of chiropractors!

  9. Cheryl says:

I used to think going to a chiropractor was voodoo medicine. A while back, a co-worker and I had very similiar symptoms – bad lower back pain that interferred with work and sleep. He had back surgery – I went to a chiropractor 2X a week for about 2 months, in order to avoid surgery.

I got immediate relief and lost a grand total of about 16 hours of work. He had to be off almost 4 months recuperating from the surgery. It took him more months after that to be in full operation.

My insurance at the time covered the visits. Think how much cheaper it was for them I went that route.

To this day, he has issues with his back. It’s been almost 20 years and (knock on wood) none at all for me since.

    Made me a firm believer.

I am not saying that what was wrong was identical – but this is just my experience.

  10. Carol says:

Cheryl…great story…I had insurance like that for about a year which covered chiro and massage…and I took good advantage of it, until the company decided we didn’t NEED so many benefits.

Mario…my only caution is that you DO YOUR HOMEWORK and find a well-recommended practitioner…some of them deserve the title “quack”.

  11. Being in the business – so to speak – if you decide to seek the services of a chiropractor – go to a wellness DC, not an injury DC.

And I say that knowing how horribly bad medical fraud is in FL.

  12. steve says:

I’m 69 this year…I hurt my back when I was in 8th grade…what is that..???…12 years old…???…can;t remember that far back..:)
Doctors called it a “slipped disk”….have had back pains all my life…and like you…sometimes for a few days…sometimes a few weeks…and on rare occasions a couple of months…

I’ve been to specialists, doctors of all kinds, chiropractors…notice I use the “plural”…that means “many”…. and they all relieved it to some extent or another…but nobody “cured” it…however I did NOT do any operations…maybe that would have cured it, I don;t know…

BUT the thing that did it for me was when i started getting physically active…and I do mean active…the gym…basketball when I was 50…played until I was 60…

then I started various martial arts regimins…and that was the best…that got my back muscles toned up
to the point that now I may have back problems once a year for a week or two…and that’s because I’m less
active now at 69 than I was 10-20 years ago…

I came away with the belief…a weak back is a “bad” back…

  13. Karen Weston says:

Two beautful ladies!! You must be so proud!

I used to struggle with lower back pain, too. I don’t know why, but mine has gotten much better since I’ve gotten older. I was once bedridden for a month with my back, and became impatient with the doctor’s muscle relaxers, pain relievers, etc., and decided to go to the chiropractor. I only went once, but for me it was a huge mistake. When I got home, I couldn’t even get out of the car!! I had to call the doctor for help and tell him what I had done. He wasn’t very happy with me, but changed my meds and I eventually got better. I may have not given the chiropractor a fair chance to work his magic, but the one trip was such a disaster for me I never wanted to give it another shot!

I hope whatever treatment you choose, Mario, you are back to your normal self soon. From my experience, there is nothing more miserable than chronic back pain and sciatica!!

Thank you for sharing your lovely family with all of us!

  14. “…decided to go to the chiropractor. I only went once, but for me it was a huge mistake. When I got home, I couldn’t even get out of the car!!”

Damn. I was so close to booking that appointment.

  15. Sydney says:

Several years ago I suffered a bad case of sciatica. The pain was tremendous and I visited a chiropractor. When I left the office I was sure that I experienced a miracle…the pain was gone!!!. My miracle lasted one day

  16. Cheryl says:

There are great doctors out there – and major quacks. Wonderful dentists – and those that screw up your teeth.

I am sure there are horrible chiropractors, too, as well as good ones. The one I went to was referred to me. He examined my xrays first to see if it was something he could do. I am sure there are situations where a chiropractor would not be able to help.

  17. Karen Weston says:

There are also a myriad of conditions that could affect your back, and varying degrees of severity. What works for one might not work for another. The chiropractor I went to had been a respected practitioner in the community for decades, but the “adjustments” made to my back in his office exacerbated my condition, and I was in even worse pain when I left. For me conventional medical treatment is the way to go.

  18. Karen Weston says:

    Steve:

I came away with the belief…a weak back is a “bad” back…

I have to agree. I lap swim three to four miles per week in an olympic-size pool and I no longer experience the aches and pains I used to have before I started. It has increased my stamina and energy and is low impact. I had to push myself out the door in the beginning, but once I discovered the physical and emotional benefits from swimming I began to look forward to it! Its a great exercise for all ages!

  19. Gary D. says:

Lovely ladies, young and old. Although I guess ‘old’ isn’t the proper term. How about young and younger.

When in high school I was a passenger in a car accident and was thrown out and landed on my back on a gravel road. Had various degrees of problems off and on for many years. As has been pointed out, a chiropractor can be wonderful or terrible, just like a dentist. I’ve been treated over time from Iowa to California and couple points in between and must say overall I would recommend at least giving it a try.
Some were much better than others but I never had one make it much worse than before I was treated. As I’ve gotten older I don’t have as many back problems but if another problem arose, I’d go to a chiropractor without hesitation. As suggested, check them out online first.
