Chart of the Day

Here is one chart where a downward trend is a good thing. It’s also the chart you might want to show to anyone who tries to tell you that: a) the Recovery Act did not make a difference or b) the economy is not improving.

Steve Benen adds:

In terms of metrics, when jobless claims fall below the 400,000 threshold, it’s considered evidence of an improving jobs landscape, and when the number drops below 370,000, it suggests jobs are being created rather quickly. We’ve now been below the 370,000 threshold 10 of the last 15 weeks.

The Romney camp will be pushing one thing and one thing only over the last few weeks of the campaign. The economy. Mitt Romney’s only chance of winning this election will not revolve around his policy statements on immigration or his binders full of women or his beliefs on contraception and abortion or even his naive and simplistic thoughts on foreign policy. As important as these issues are, they’re not the game changers. The state of the economy is. If Romney can convince enough people that a slow-recovering economy is a direct result of Obama’s policies, he’s got a real chance at victory.

Romney and his Super PACs are going to spend hundreds of millions over the next two weeks bombarding the airwaves with ads, trying to convince swing state voters that the economy is not recovering. If they are successful in pushing that false narrative to low-information voters, watch out. Your worst nightmares could come true.

Never underestimate the power of what a sustained torrent of lies and fear combined with unlimited cash can do to the minds and hearts of the uninformed.`

Yes — makes a lot of sense to go backwards when we are steadily going forward, doesn’t it ?? Unfortunately, for people that want instant everything, they will buy into the Romney smokescreen of immediate prosperity for all of us the day after he’s elected. If his supporters believe those hollow promises and vote that phoney excuse for a Presidential candidate into office, they are going to be in for some serious disappointment. Despite what he says now, he meant exactly what he said behind closed doors at that fundraiser, folks — he won’t be working for 47% of us Americans he considers to be worthless leeches.

And it just happens to begin right before the election? Sorry, republicans aren’t this dumb. You believe what you want, we will continue to follow the truth.

  3. Right before the election, Karalyn? Is chart reading one of the things you struggle with in life? The recovery began in 2009. Sorry, but you might want to reconsider your thoughts on how dumb Republicans can be.

Good chart. Here’s more relevant news: Housing starts are up 15 percent in September. ”The number of homes that were started increased 15 percent from August to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 872,000. That’s the fastest rate since July 2008. Single-family homes, which made up more than two-thirds of the new construction, rose 11 percent to 603,000. That was also the quickest rate in four years. Apartment construction, which can be more volatile from month to month, rose 25.1 percent. And applications for building permits, a sign of future construction, jumped nearly 12 percent to an annual rate of 894,000, another high point since July 2008.” The Associated Press.

Yes, Mario, chart reading is a challenge for some. Much easier to just get Rush’s take on the whole thing.

@Karalyn Hill – too bad we won’t hear from you again. I’d love to understand more about what goes on inside the mind of a neocon. “we will continue to follow the truth.” Seriously, you actually believe you are on the side of truth? How do you define truth? Where do you obtain your facts? Do you ever check out non-partisan sources of facts? If so, who? Can you prove any of your reasons for not backing the president? Did you know that the GOP have set a new despicable standard in lies and misdirection?

    Why are you supporting Romney?”

  7. Karen Weston says:

    LOL, Cheryl!

  8. Karen Weston says:

A friend just posted on FB that if Romney moves any further to the left he’ll need to change parties! :)

  9. Saint Stephen says:

    Mario:

I’m sure Karalyn is just using a more expansive definition of time than we are. After all, if you go back, say, 6000 years, then the first quarter of 2009 is just before the election, relatively speaking. Yeah, that must be it.

  10. R. Martin says:

Yes, this chart would be good to show to my GOP friends. However, they are going to ask the following questions:

    1. Who is Steve Benen?
    2. From where does this data come?

I don’t know the answers. Can someone enlighten me, please.

    Thanks,

    R. Martin

  11. fidlerten says:

To be fair, unemployment claims must be balanced with other factors, along with surveys on employers if they are hiring. The reason being that part of the reason unemployment goes down is because some of the unemployed gave up looking for work. Still, employment is increasing also, though it is at a very slow pace.

We could use a good jobless report just before the election, but at least one that is moderate. A bad one would be bad for the president’s reelection.

  12. occupyalways says:

SuperPacs will desparately try to get Romney in the Presidency as they will have direct access to the President to give them back their money when he is elected. Romney will have a lot of favors to grant. At least one billion dollars worth. Nothing compared to trillions Romney can spend on future wars and refurbishment of armaments and tanks.

I am sure America will go beyond money and will have the wisdom to go with Obama’s diplomacy policies and future economic success

  13. Want to know how the economy is doing in your area – go to the mall this weekend and see how close to the door you can park.

Here in WA there are cars parked everywhere – you can’t even get close to the front door of Home Depot on the weekend. Cabella’s – is full every time I drive by – specialty store sporting goods, fishing, etc. Built a brand new store 45 minutes north of Seattle and the place has had a full parking lot since they opened the doors six months ago.

More good news – Ben Stein is now voting for Obama. Their hair must be on fire over at Fox News – between Crowley and this, they’ve had a very bad week!

  14. demi says:

What i don’t get is the total disbelief of some people that the economy is growing and employment is on the rise and the housing market is on the up tick i mean it had to happen at some point, so what that it happens now during the election life still goes on no matter the election, progress still has to be made daily.

Thats a great chart i’m glad you posted it, it’s maddening and saddening whats going on in this country employers telling their employee’s how they should vote if they want to keep their job. theres a recording of Romney doing the very same thing telling an employer to basically instruct his employees to vote for him if they want to keep their jobs he even mentioned that it’s not illegal to do so, how about the Koch brothers and other companies around the country starting it all off. Whats it with Romney that all the wealthy elites believe that we just have to have romney at all cost. or shall i say no matter what it cost. If Obama had done or said any of these things that Romney has done and said he’d be out on his tail, but romney gets a pass on everything but yet he still thinks that no one should say a word about it. I’m more then sure thats how he runs his business’s you do as you’re told you don’t ask questions and you never ever step out of line or he fires you.

Obamas nothing like this guy thank god Obama cares he’s looking out for the american people he’s keeping us safe putting us on the right track and we are moving forward, heck i’m voting for Obama no matter what the polls say no matter what happened at the first debate.

Obama is just a regular human being with a good heart Romney is the black knight he has a darkness about him that will destroy this country maybe even this world. We shouldn’t chance it not at all.
