After watching the absolute madness emerging from the Republican presidential contest this week, the illustration above speaks for itself. From Mitt Romney’s insane opposition to the automotive industry bailout which saved hundreds of thousands of jobs to Pope Rick Santorum’s sick dream in having contraception made illegal, masochistic is the nicest thing I can think of describing anyone who would help these people win election.
I found this post last night on Reddit while researching, “Why people vote against their own interest”. This is not a link to my site, nor is it written by me or about my dad. It is directly on topic with Mario’s post, so if you have time, I recommend it.
My son wants to vote republican because he was assaulted sexually by a gay man early in his puberty years. He believes they are the party against the gays. Cannot convince him otherwise.
@Ana Maria:
I too had a similar experience which played a role in my early conservative views. I was not assaulted, but harassed by one individual over a period of time in my youth. It’s very unfortunate looking back, because had these things not happen to me, I might have a much clearer conscience now about my voting record for the last 20 years.
Guessing he’s 18-25? For me it just took time to gain the maturity and realize a few things-
1. Mankind has the capacity to do very bad things, and “gay” has nothing to do with it. Just look at the more typical man-woman rape case. Would this mean that these women should never again vote for men? It’s the same logic.
2. To me, my interactions with gay people was very limited where and how I grew up. Therefor the only interaction that I had was negative one. In reality, had I got out more, I would have come into contact as I do now, with gay people all the time that are just like me (only gay). I was a product of being shut into a social group.
3. Lastly, and this cannot be understated. I came to realize that voting on one (or two)issues is dumb. I could no longer justify pointing at one or two things on one hand, while ignoring the fact that the Republicans I was voting for were doing so many blatantly reprehensible things.
It just took time. I suppose that had I put 2 and 2 together earlier, maybe then I would have emerged earlier…
I can say this, since I have, I feel like I have awaken from a drug induced haze. I do feel bad for others that still remain in that “haze”.
I simply call them the Mis-led and/or the Mis-informed, especially if they are not part of the one percent.

For me it’s eerily familiar.
Sadly, I call them family.
I’m starting to believe they’re mentally retarded. I never believed it before,but now I do.
