NASHVILLE — The House on Monday passed a bill to allow people with handgun carry permits to bring their weapons into establishments that serve alcohol.
The chamber voted 70-26 in favor of the bill sponsored by Rep. Curry Todd, a Collierville Republican and a retired police officer.
“It’s a matter of public safety,” Todd said after the vote. “It’s a matter of them protecting themselves, which they have a right to do.
“And to make them leave their guns in the car is just asinine,” he said.
The bill passed the House 66-23 and the Senate approved the measure in a 26-7 vote. Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen was unable to veto the bill.
“For a couple hundred years in this country we have understood the rationale for not mixing guns and alcohol,” Bredesen said. “And to change it in this way in this state, for reasons that don’t seem the least bit clear, I just think is a real mistake.”
Todd’s response was that his proposal was supported by the National Rifle Association.
Well, there you go. If the NRA approves, then it’s got to be a brilliant piece of legislation. I’m sure that the 90% of adult Tennesseans (is that what you call ‘em?) who don’t own firearms will sleep better knowing that their local drunk is packing heat as he downs his 14th beer.

…and then there is just outright STUPIDITY! Supported by a republican, retired, police officer and the ultimate logic behind this is the NRA, who apparently, knows more, than Christ himself is behind the legislation???!!! You know Mario, just when, I think I have a grip and I can’t be shocked by things that go on in the world, because I have developed a sort of cynicism, to survive it all, you manage to ZAP me again! However, keep on zapping, you woke me up!
This belongs in a comedy sketch not in reality. WOW guns and alcohol….clearly they are not thinking. How many deaths will it take to get them to rescind the bill?
I’m not too sure how interested you may be in actual facts for the purpose of your blog, but it is against the law in the State of Tennessee to be under the influence and have a firearm in your possession. This law was passed by our State Houses, vetoed by Governor Bredesen, and then his veto was over ridden by State Representatives. Although I’m not sure it has been over ridden by the State Senate as yet.
It is against the law to have a firearm in your possession if you are drinking. The rationale behind this “law” is supposedly that people who are NOT drinking and are NOT impaired would be able to protect themselves or their loved ones against someone who is breaking the law and participating in some sort of armed offense in an establishment that serves liquor, which would include most restaurants, as well as straight out “bars”. It is already, and remains against the law to be drinking and in possession of a firearm.
With that said, while I am a staunch and fervent supporter and participant of my 2nd amendment right to bear arms, I have a Son that works as a bartender. I don’t relish the thought of him possibly telling someone they have had too much to drink and they may be armed but that possibility will exist for those willing to break the law, one way or the other. I’m not sure this particular law increases that possibility as any law abiding citizen most likely would not be “packing heat as he downs his 14th beer” anyway.
Just want to keep the facts straight for all us intellectually challenged, one tooth having, ignorant, “Republican” “Tennesseans”.
I am a frequent reader of “Pith in the Wind”. If you want to change view of Tennessee, start with your representatives. Perhaps dwarfed only by the foolishness of Missouri. BTW, I like Tennessee. Will be visiting again in July. And, if I move there… you are turning BLUE!!!
@mimi…..I am a man of some means. Please tell me if you would accept a modest payment to NOT move to my state? I’m certain both you and I are much better off with you abiding just where you are.

Why would anyone believe that this is a good idea?

2.) Tennessee
